Lower Dolington Rd “Deep Ditch” To Be Repaired

Back at the 6 January 2025 Board of Supervisors (BOS) meeting, the Newtown Township Manager informed the BOS that he would speak with the Public Works Director to have this "Deep Ditch" in the side of Lower Dolinton Rd just north of Frost Ln repaired.

In a followup email, it was confirmed that the Public Works Department is “planning to fix the issue on L. Dolington Road shoulder this spring.”

Spring has arrived and I note that potholes are being repaired. So I asked the Manager:

  • When will this be repaired?
  • How will it be repaired?

I'm not an engineer, but I don't think filling it with loose gravel/stones is the answer as cars will continue to run into it and displace the stones onto the roadway, which may be a hazard,

Also, I would contend that if this ditch is meant to drain rainwater run-off, I would say from the looks of it that it is not working. Besides that as seen the photo attached just a few feet down hill from this ditch as an actual Drainage structure at the Frost Lane/LDR intersection (northbound lane).

johnmacknewtown's insight:

Public Works is anticipating marking out the area for restoration next week, and placing a PA one-call to mark underground utilities.

L. Dolington Road will need to be temporarily closed between Frost Ln and Stamford Dr. intersection during work, and reopened when finished. It is anticipated that the repairs will take about 3-4 days (may not be consecutive days).

Restoration will involve digging out the damaged shoulder, saw cutting the existing asphalt, adding subgrade stone, then placement & compaction of asphalt base material, followed by the asphalt wearing course.

It is anticipated that this work beginning mid-late April depending on weather and availability of staffing and materials.

Sounds Kosher to me!
