Speed Reduced on Newtown-Yardley Road. North & South Sycamore Street Too!

Speed Reduced on Newtown-Yardley Road. North & South Sycamore Street Too! | Newtown News of Interest |

As discussed at the January 23, 2023, Meet Mack Monday Zoom meeting, Newtown Twp traffic engineers (Remington-Vernick Engineering, aka RVE) presented plans to supervisors to lower the speed limit to 25 MPH on a stretch of Newtown-Yardley Rd – from Lower Dolington Rd to Elm Ave (at the boro border) – and North Sycamore Street – from Swamp Rd to Durham Rd.

According to email correspondence from RVE, the engineers have prepared plans showing the new signs that are needed, as well as signs to be removed and/or replaced.

The decision to reduce the speed limit on Newtown-Yardley Rd will be made at the January 25, 2023, BOS meeting.

UPDATE (1/25/2023): #NewtownPA supervisors unanimously APPROVED reduced 25 MPH speed limit for section of Newtown-Yardley Rd between Lower Dolington Rd & Boro border (Elm Ave).

UPDATE (2/1/2023): The new 25 MPH signs are in place and the Newtown Twp Police Department warns that the new speed limit "will be strictly enforced!"

For North Sycamore Street, Dave Sander, the Newtown Solicitor, was of the opinion that the Board already authorized the lowering of the speed limit to 25 MPH for N Sycamore St. All that needs to be done is to draft the ordinance, which can be approved at the next BOS meeting, which is on February 8, 2023.

UPDATE (2/8/23): At the February 8, 2023, BOS meeting, supervisors unanimously voted to lower the speed limit to 25 MPH on North AND South Sycamore Street (from the Bypass all the way to Durham Rd).

johnmacknewtown's insight:

Interestingly, Mr. Sander - the Township Solicitor - informed the BOS that the Newtown Municipal Code/Traffic specifies that the maximum allowable speed limit for the “entire length” of Sycamore St (North AND South) is 25 MPH whereas street signs currently indicate 35 MPH as the speed limit. Obviously, the traffic code must be amended to indicate that the speed limit is 25 MPH on N Sycamore St and 35 MPH on S Sycamore St (at least that is my interpretation of what needs to be done).  Listen to his comments...
