I am John Mack, your host and a Newtown Township Supervisor.
Each month I host a Meet Mack Monday Zoom meeting to inform residents of items that are of interest to them and to get feedback and comments from them. This helps me keep better informed of residents’ concerns when voting on important issues at supervisor meetings.

Newtown Township, with the approval of PennDOT, has placed "NO TURN ON RED" signage at the intersection of Durham Road / Sycamore Street and Washington Crossing Road / Durham Road.
According to the September 9, 2022, Engineer’s Report, RVE (township engineers) reviewed a request for additional signage at the above-mentioned intersection. Proposed improvements: Addition of two signs including: R1-5L/R 'Yield Here to Pedestrian with Left or Right Arrow' sign, 36" x 36" and R10-6AL/R 'Stop Here on Red with Left or Right Arrow' sign, 24" x 30".
The “No Turn on Red” sign – although prominent – is not stopping vehicles from making right turns on red. Perhaps a “No Right Turn on Red” sign would be better. Or perhaps it will just be a matter of issuing a few tickets and allowing more time to pass for drivers to pay attention.
Personally, I’m not sure if this is a good idea or not. The Board of Supervisors (BOS) did not have an opportunity to approve this. In the past, we've approved other pedestrian safety measures for N Sycamore St (see "Insights"). I’m sure we will be hearing from residents/drivers who regularly make this turn on red.
In any case, I am sure that this is being done to improve pedestrian safety, which has been an issue on North Sycamore Street (read for example, "Supervisors Act To Improve Pedestrian Safety!"). Regardless, drivers must yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk, even when making a legal right-hand turn onto N Sycamore.

Newtown Township Police are investigating a fatal auto/pedestrian crash, which occurred in the 200 block of N. Sycamore Street.
The crash occurred on December 22 at approximately 11:04 p.m. when a man was struck while attempting to cross North Sycamore Street to catch an Uber with friends. The Uber had arrived on the northbound side of N. Sycamore Street.
The striking vehicle was also traveling northbound on N. Sycamore Street when the impact occurred. The vehicle and operator remained on the scene, police said.
North Sycamore Street was closed for several hours in both directions from Silo Drive to Durham Road.
“It comes down to educating the public. The public needs to know that they can’t cross outside of a crosswalk,” said [Newtown Township Police Chief] Hearn. “Inside a crosswalk the cars are supposed to yield to them. Additional signage with lighting elements, that runs into an additional cost factor and involves ongoing maintenance and a liability factor if a bulb burns out and it’s not replaced in a timely manner. It’s a managed approach, but I believe education is the best way to go at this point.”
On December 27, 2021, I started the “Improve Pedestrian Safety on N Sycamore St” petition on Change.org. Over 850 people from around the world – and at least 570 from the Newtown area – have signed that petition.
I disagree with the Chief regarding his opinion of adding pedestrian crossing lights - such as blinking warning yellow lights. Yes, this would be a township expense and require maintenance, but isn't the health and safety of residents of paramount importance?
