ASTRAKHAN, October 4 (RIA Novosti) - A new Project 21630 (Buyan-class) corvette has arrived at a naval base hosting Russia’s Caspian Flotilla to boost the country’s maritime defenses in the region, a flotilla’s spokesman said.

“The Makhachkala corvette has successfully passed state trials and will soon start performing its operational tasks in the Caspian Sea as part of the [Caspian] flotilla,” Alexey Rulev said Thursday.

The Makhachkala is the third Buyan-class vessel put in service with the Caspian Flotilla.

Buyan class corvettes have been specifically designed to operate in shallow waters and carry out a broad range of missions in the Caspian Sea, as well as in adjoining river deltas.

The vessels feature a reduced radar signature and high maneuverability.

They were built at the St. Petersburg-based Almaz Shipyard and are armed with an A-190 artillery system, two AK-306 30-mm six-barrel machineguns and Grad-M 40-tube 122-mm multiple rocket launch systems.

Patrick H. 's insight:

Il s'agit donc de la 3ème de cette série. 6 autres corvettes sont en construction ou aux essais  dans une version modifiée lance-missiles type Buyan-M (Projet 21631)

The Russia Navy's Caspian Flotilla will conduct sea trials of its second Project 21631 Almaz shipbuilding Buyan-class corvette, Uglich, in late August, Russia's southern military district has announced.

Currently, the first ship of the class, Grad Sviyazhsk, is undergoing final state tests and is due to be delivered to the Russian Navy by the end of 2013, according to RIA Novosti.

The strategic command's press service said that the Russian Navy will receive a Grachonok-class patrol boat, several Serna-class landing craft, and three tugboats in the near future.

Procured as part of Russia's broader strategy to boost the Caspian Flotilla's capability, the new vessels will be deployed to protect offshore economic zones and combat enemy warships in littoral zones.

Designed to protect naval installations from sabotage and terrorist attacks in littoral zones, the Grachonok-class boats feature a relatively small displacement and high speed, and can also be used in border defence activities for the Russian coastguard.

The 25.8m-long and 61t Serna-class landing craft has been designed to carry one tank, two infantry fighting vehicles, armoured personnel carriers, or a 92-men landing troop.

Armed with Kalibr (SS-N-27) anti-ship missiles, 100mm and 30mm guns and Igla-1M air defence systems, the Buyan-class corvettes have a displacement capacity of 949t and a range of 1,500nm.

The Buyan-class vessels can cruise at a speed of maximum speed of 28kt using a twin screw combined diesel and diesel (CODAD) propulsion system, which comprises of two Zvezda M520 radial 56-cylinder diesel engines driving two pump-jet propulsors.
