Baptiste Coulmont » Que faire avec ses Saints ? = Whatever happened to the saints? | Name News | Scoop.it
Les Saints disparaissent de la scène publique. De moins en moins de bébés reçoivent, à la naissance, un prénom inscrit dans le calendrier liturgique français.
Clare's insight:

Charts showing the decline in the use of saints' names in France over the 20th century; the effect of saints' days on the names of people born on that day (I think), and a map of Paris that shows a higher density of saintly names in the centre and south-west than elsewhere.  Intriguing.

Clare's insight:

There are lots of map graphics like this out there, but this is by far my favourite - and not just because of the catchy music and years changing on the beat, though that helps! It's worth watching a few (dozen) times.

The last way of visualising the data (from 6 mins) is something I haven't seen before. I've been enjoying picking a name and watching it move around on the map.

One particularly interesting aspect of the multi-cultural/cross-geographic data that we have is that it allows us to trace certain patterns or trends across these boundaries, and one such pattern is the prolificness (or not) of diminutives.

The Baby Name Style Timeline

I've identified the characteristic names of every year since 1900 -- the names most distinctively popular at that time compared to other eras. Some of the names did become #1 hits, but many others defined their fashion times without ever reaching the top spot. Each year's boy/girl name pair represents a moment in American culture.

You can get inspiration for names everywhere. I always have to keep a notebook with me to write down all my ideas, because I will be inspired at the most random of times. It recently occurred to me that prints and patterns have such great names, many of which can be transferred over to a baby.
Clare's insight:

Some fun names here, like Dot, Floral, and Chevron (Sophie thought it was cool before Quinoa's friend made it so!).
