The story of queer country music – and its message of hope

The story of queer country music – and its message of hope | Music bringing unity | Scoop.it

As LGBTQ+ country artists like Orville Peck and Lil Nas X blaze a trail, Addison Nugent looks at the surprising and little-known tradition of queer country music that preceded them.

Jackson Szaszs insight:
This article from bbc radio speaks on the musician Lil Naz X and his outward expansion it to territory uncharted and how it makes the way for others to do so no matter their sexuality. I believe this is a message not wide speared enough and to have it spread by BBC Radio is fantastic.

To highlight Mental Health week; BBC Radio 6 Music's Chris Hawkins invited composer and multi-instrumentalist Erland Cooper to write a piece of music that highlights how music and sound can help our mental health. Jackson Szaszs insight:
I included this piece because of how it speaks to people having troubles with their mental health in quarantine. Also with these musicians making it during lockdown it truly shows the depth of the concept. While this scoop is published by YouTube it comes from BBC Radio a massive news source in the area.

Jackson Szaszs insight:
This article speaks about a fact not commonly spoken of in the industry, that music is a fantastic way to teach young minds about difficult topics in a way they understand. This is absolute fantastic foundation started by a very well known musician and actor and being published by Fast Company gives it so much more publicity and credibility.

An Unfinished Symphony | Nobel Peace Prize Shorts

The Miagi Orchestra is a South African orchestra dedicated to helping the nation overcome decades of violence, conflict and division through the power of music. The film follows two of its musicians: Tsepo Pooe, who grew up in Soweto Township; and Lize Schaap, who grew up in wealthy Pretoria. Through their eyes, and differing experiences of growing up in South Africa, we understand the enormous impact apartheid continues to have, but also see hope for a brighter future for the country. The Miagi Orchestra’s mission is inspired by the work and legacy of Nelson Mandela, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Jackson Szaszs insight:
I think that this article brings light to a genre of music that is under appreciated in pop culture. The song it self in my opinion is absolutely beautiful. Also I believe it makes such a stronger statement that the music was made by people from the country and not an outside country portraying their view of the situation. While National Geographic is not a usual source for music news, it is a fantastic source in this situation.
