China uses big data to evolve transport networks.

China uses big data to evolve transport networks. | Multimodal transportation | Scoop.it
The period 2015/2016 is unique and remarkable for the development prospects of China. First, last week China took part in the UN global summit regarding the adoption of 17 sustainable development goal...
Editor's insight:

China is taking  its transport infrastructure to the next level with the help of big data insights.

Excerpt: China's steady decline in GDP growth since 2010 - the lowest since 1990 - and the increased domestic pressure for a better environment and air quality are pushing decision makers and industries to (re)allocate resources more strategically and pay a much stronger focus on efficiency and sustainability. Data, metrics, and technology will be absolutely critical for smarter decision-making in China. My student Christopher Lewis recently defined 'smart city' as "the growing ecosystem of networked devices that supports responsive governance and improves urban life." Open source data along with publicly available government data provide the necessary information needed to run groundbreaking prediction models, knowledge management tools and data miners. Together they allow Chinese decision-makers to focus on service-delivery, oversight and accountability in a 'smarter' way.

Are #BigData #OpenData Transport’s ‘Silver Bullets’? Oct.6 #ITSWC15 @ITS_Congresses http://t.co/H29t1kE4We http://t.co/rBH6A07Ii8
Editor's insight:

Mobile phone and social data can deliver unique insight to transport operators. The ITS World Congress 2015 event in Bordeaux examined the potential.

Excerpt: In the transport and mobility domains, satisfying individuals’ wishes for the best personal travel solution has long had priority over the needs of overall network management. The combination of better access to traditional transport related data] and increasing availability of new sources of data coming from end users (eg smartphones, social media, crowd sourcing), transport and communication infrastructure and vehicles (probe data), creates a new paradigm for data sourcing, data sharing and data exchange. We may for the first time have the chance to satisfy the needs of both the users and the stakeholders in transport management. Big Data and Open Data can make the difference however data quality, privacy and ownership issues and technological aspects need to be considered.

Big data helps airports balance leisure and business revenue. | Multimodal transportation | Scoop.it

"To a great extent, airports have to play the cards they have been dealt with when it comes to fine-tuning their retail operations. If you are Malaga airport, you’ll focus on souvenirs for foreign holidaymakers returning home. If you are Hannover airport, you will focus more on foreign business travellers returning home. And if you are Manchester airport, you’ll have a balance of goods for local holidaymakers and business travelers who are leaving home."

Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport asks whether Big Data exists at airports & how we can use it to improve the passenger experience & business performance

Via Ricci Aero
Editor's insight:

To collect, store, correlate and analyse data from all the different systems properly and efficiently, it is necessary to follow a few architectural principals:

- Whenever you use business intelligence, use it based on one central data warehouse. One should avoid analysing data in different operational systems. This is the only way to get consistent results the management can rely on

- Business intelligence for non-operational systems could be done on a different IT basis, but then the relevant financial, administrative and commercial data must also be duplicated to the central data warehouse

- Develop a clear staging process between the operational systems and the data warehouse. For example, this helps by consolidating data from and standardising reference data across multiple source systems. Airports should not underestimate the effort required for the staging process

- Base your analysis on a stable and detailed process model. This is important for the right conclusions

- Use the opportunity to combine data from different processes to get a ‘bigger picture’ of your business.

Homes in pedestrianized areas are most popular. Texas study.

Homes in pedestrianized areas are most popular. Texas study. | Multimodal transportation | Scoop.it
A study of 21,000 single-family house sales in Austin, Texas, found the highest value premiums for walkability in the most walkable neighborhoods.

Editor's insight:

Younger city dwellers often don't aspire to owning a vehicle, so the public transport infrastructure is important. In a Texas study, house prices rise in areas that enable people to get around on foot.

Excerpt:

The study by six researchers at the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Texas A&M University, "Assessing Benefits of Neighborhood Walkability to Single-Family Property Values," supports many other studies—such as this study by economist Joe Cortright. Research on Greater Boston by Christopher Leinberger and Patrick Lynch showed walkability premiums across all real estate product types. The Texas A&M study can be viewed for free through October.

While these studies raise concerns about housing affordability in cities, walkability substantially lowers household transportation costs. The websites H&T Index of the Center for Neighborhood Technology and HUD's Location Affordability Portal demonstrate that urban neighborhoods are the most affordable when transportation is taken into account.

Big data project predicts train delays before they happen.

Train company Stockholmståg is using big data to predict delays before they happen and enable them to minimise the impact on the transport infrastructure
Editor's insight:

Big data helps train operators to predict delays before they happen.

Excerpt: “We can now forecast disruptions in our service and our traffic control centre can prevent the ripple effects that actually cause most delays,” said Stockholmståg communications director Mikael Lindskog.

Currently still in test phase, the forecasting model, known as the "commuter prognosis", is based on a mathematical algorithm developed by Stockholmståg and data scientist Wilhelm Landerholm.
