Here's How America Uses Its Land

Here's How America Uses Its Land | Ms.Romes APHG | Scoop.it
The 48 contiguous states alone are a 1.9 billion-acre jigsaw puzzle of cities, farms, forests and pastures.
K Rome's insight:

This set of 15 maps on how land is used in the 48 contiguous U.S. states is a phenomenal resource to visualize how we use our land (admittedly this does exclude Alaska and Hawaii, but given that Alaska's land use patterns can skew the patterns considerably).  This is especially useful in agricultural units, but has many other applications.

K Rome's insight:

I was glad to present in Washington D.C., and for any who could not attend, it was designed as a "first foray" into using ArcGIS online and chance to discover great web maps for every unit of APHG.

There are many great teacher sites; this one has the great unit-specific resources as well as a student-produced "Motherload review packet."  Consider having your students collaboratively produce their own review packet.

The Failure of Multiculturalism

The Failure of Multiculturalism | Ms.Romes APHG | Scoop.it

"A beautiful new book called MAP: Exploring the World is the perfect insight into the world of cartography, with the book featuring rare and ancient maps from pioneers, illustrators and cartographers.

And it’s not just geographical – the book shows the way in which design, politics, and how we see ourselves has changed as the world has evolved.

The maps tell their own stories in their own way across 5,000 years of cartographic innovation, from the first attempts by the Greeks and scrolls of Eastern Asia, to the complexity of modern life."

I found this to be a very interesting tradition for such a major city in Spain like Madrid. I could definitely see this happening in smaller towns that want to honor their culture and their ancestors, but this seems like it would be the equivalent of seeing parts of New York city closed down for herds of animals to pass through for an old tradition. I find it very unusual that a major city would do this, but also very cool that the citizens of Madrid pay homage to their culture in such a way. Especially with the whole city getting behind it and looking forward to the event. It must be a real sight to see so many sheep passing through this big city as well.
