Digital used to be an add-on to core business but those are days behind us, now. It’s time for universities and colleges to stop treating digital as an accessory and to integrate it fully within all aspects of their business activities.

It is no longer Flexible Learning, Digital Learning or Blended Learning: it's just Learning. Now we can talk about active, authentic, distance, instructivist, constructivist... without the digital conversation being a distraction.

Ingrained in primary education, why has tertiary not embraced an inquiry approach until postgraduate level? In my experience it remains the tertiary tutor/teacher who must champion inquiry based learning rather than the institution promoting and embedding it in how they provide learning.

Flipped learning. Such a basic concept but so challenging to roll out in larger institutions. Leadership is the key. Specifically, recognising the shift in practice at a strategic level.
Change needs to be supported. Change needs to be planned and progress measured. Institutions will only get so far by encouraging a community of practice. This is not new. Just saying.

Digital capability underpins the development of technology enhanced learning. But, it is the ICT infrastructure that enables learning and development for staff.
The learning management system, and the way it engages with the digital learning environment, can be seen as a doorway to staff capability development along the corridor of daily activity. Ask yourself - how inviting is this doorway? Is it signposted? is it clear what lies beyond the doorway of capability development?

The reverse classroom is not something you would use for every lesson, nor is the lecture, or the flipped classroom. These are strategies that make up the teachers toolkit of approaches.
Diverse learning and teaching strategies are often applied by teachers, tutors, lecturers without fuss - instinctively. All have merit, and have challenges. Used strategically they can have great effect. The key constraint I see every day is time and support for teachers' professional development.

Sounding good on paper. But there are no standards for education credentialing and the biggest obstacle, employer acceptance of a blockchain 'qualification', is not even touched on in this article.

Learning design is a considered, creative process that occurs within a wider eco-system of people, processes, systems and places, in which one element is dependent on the others. As these elements change, and the technologies available to us increase, engaging with an iterative process of creating and redesigning programmes, modules and learning activities becomes ever more important.

The report, released today, highlights the emergence of a new global skills gap where gender, class, geography and age can have a huge impact on whether a person is able to harness new technologies or not. Supporting the development of digital skills is complex. Initiatives are often context specific and reliant on partnerships. In addition, the environment must be fertile for initiatives to flourish. Policy makers, education leaders, industry and the individual all have a role in equitable digital skills development.

Vocational training organisations (ITPs) have been standing at this crossroad for a decade, dithering. It seems we continue to support models that face the institution and struggle to break free from standardisation. Government systems are not helping us decide our direction. Institution leaders invest in continual micro-change because the consequences of a wholesale direction change are likely to impact on the size and scope of the business resulting in job losses and a change in market share. Levels of leadership bravery are low because we care deeply about the people we employ.
Some ITPs have shifted and the results of their commitment to a new education model are beginning to show. Others have not realised it is the education model that needs to change, not the management structure, or IT services, or programme portfolio. End of rave.

We all know education will not fit a classic business model. Unless you think differently about the consumer: the learner. For the business model to work you need to change the ethical baseline and move the risk from provider to learner. Once you are comfortable with the learner taking the risk then you can start to make money. Many providers do this without realising what they are doing.
There are businesses that protect the learner - they provide quality products and services and options for learners to change the contract once understanding develops. But, the model is the same: all power to the provider.

Intrinsic motivation and understanding their learning pathway are critical factors in learners' success (Hattie). Considering the content is already online, if we find ways of supporting learners to scaffold knowledge toward learner-identified goals we will have success with self directed learning in underdeveloped regions that we don't see in more developed nations.
It begins with frameworks that help learners develop personal learning pathways. Add to this the significant challenge in providing access to the web. Easy to say from my desk. #whiteprivilegeshame
