Early prospects point to strong wheat crop in 2023. The benchmark index of international food commodity prices declined in February for the eleventh consecutive month, albeit only marginally, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported today. The FAO Cereal Price Index remained virtually unchanged from January. International wheat prices rose marginally during the month, as concerns over dry conditions in the United States of America and robust demand for supplies from Australia were largely countered by a strong competition among exporters. International rice prices eased by 1.0 percent due to a slowdown in trading activities in most major Asian exporters, whose currencies also depreciated against the United States dollar.

FAO’s latest forecast for world cereal production in 2022 has been revised upward by 9 Mt this month, now standing at 2 774 Mt, still 1.3 percent lower year-on-year. The bulk of the upward revision concerns rice and, to a lesser extent, coarse grains that largely reflect the incorporation of recently released official figures. Regarding rice, February assessments by Indian officials report a more contained impact of uneven monsoon rains on main-crop output, which coupled with a pronounced increase in secondary crop plantings (just concluded), overturned expectations of an Indian production decline this season. Output was also upgraded for several other countries, most notably Sri Lanka and Thailand. By contrast, official reports in the United Republic of Tanzania suggest that poor rains resulted in a greater output reduction than previously envisaged, while provincial authorities in Pakistan’s Punjab indicate a lower area realization, adding to the output losses endured by the country as a result of severe floods, particularly in Sindh. Put together, these changes raised FAO’s forecast of global rice production in 2022 by 4.9 Mt to 517 Mt (milled basis), which while being 1.5 percent below the 2021 all-time high would still constitute an above-average harvest. At 2 780 Mt, the forecast for global cereal utilization in 2022/23 is ...
Scientists say more needs to be done to adapt, from wastewater recycling to planting less water-intensive crops.

The Market Monitor of the G20 Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) tracks current and expected future trends in international food markets, including market and policy drivers, and detects conditions that warrant the attention of policy makers. With no end in sight to the war in Ukraine and threats of further escalation, uncertainty continues to hang over agricultural markets. Supplies are tight. Reduced plantings in Ukraine mean that other countries will need to produce additional grains and oilseeds to help rebuild global stocks and moderate price levels. The world has so far been relatively fortunate: a combination of good weather and strong producer supply response has kept market prices from rebounding back to the high levels of early 2022. However, tight stocks will mean increased price volatility, particularly during periods of uncertainty such as planting times and the Northern Hemisphere growing seasons. In addition, uncertainty over events like the renewal of the Black Sea Grain Initiative will continue to roil markets.

While coarse grain markets usually focus on maize, here we will look at feed and food consumption for barley, sorghum, oats and millet, highlighting trends and developments. The United Nations General Assembly declared 2023 the International Year of Millets, with millet crops growing on arid lands with minimal inputs and being highly resilient to changes in climate. In 2022/23, global millet production totalled 30.8m t, with India being by far the largest producer. With crops mainly consumed domestically, global traded volumes are negligible. A number of international experts will look at the year ahead, highlighting potential risks and challenges over the coming months with respect to production, consumption and trade prospects.
