WORLD: Scientists can fortify plants against heat stress as global temperatures rise | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Rising global temperatures are posing a threat not only to people and wildlife but plants as well. The question of why many plants succumb as the heat increases is now better understood, thanks to a team of scientists who have identified the mechanism in plant cells that regulates their immunity.
It has long been known that increased temperatures compromises plants’ ability to make a defense hormone called salicylic acid, which boosts their immune system against invaders. However, how this defense mechanism works at the molecular level wasn’t well understood.

Abstract: Adjusting agricultural emissions for trade matters for climate change mitigation | Nature Communications

Abstract: Adjusting agricultural emissions for trade matters for climate change mitigation | Nature Communications | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in food systems is becoming more challenging as food is increasingly consumed away from producer regions, highlighting the need to consider emissions embodied in trade in agricultural emissions accounting. To address this, our study explores recent trends in trade-adjusted agricultural emissions of food items at the global, regional, and national levels. We find that emissions are largely dependent on a country’s consumption patterns and their agricultural emission intensities relative to their trading partners’. The absolute differences between the production-based and trade-adjusted emissions accounting approaches are especially apparent for major agricultural exporters and importers and where ...

How can the European Common Agricultural Policy help halt biodiversity loss? Recommendations by over 300 experts

How can the European Common Agricultural Policy help halt biodiversity loss? Recommendations by over 300 experts | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

The European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has not halted farmland biodiversity loss. The CAP post-2023 has a new ‘‘Green Architecture,’’ including the new ‘‘Eco-scheme’’ instrument. How can this new Green Architecture help tackle the biodiversity crisis? Through 13 workshops and an online survey, over 300 experts from 23 European Member States addressed this question.

From experts’ contributions, key principles for success include preserving and restoring (semi)natural elements and extensive grasslands; improving spatial planning and landscape-scale implementation, including through collective actions; implementing result-based approaches; and improved knowledge exchange. To maximize the effectiveness of Eco-scheme for biodiversity, experts highlighted the need to prioritize evidence-based actions, allocate a sufficient budget for biodiversity, and incentivize management improvements through higher payment levels. Additionally, stronger coherence is needed among CAP instruments.

Abstract: Diversity and drivers of crop diversification pathways of European farms

Diversified cropping systems are a main pillar of agroecological practices, but their development is hindered by technological lock-in of agri-food systems around a few major crops. There are only a few examples where minor crops successfully developed and stabilized in a given agricultural region. The underlying change processes at play in these situations are not well known.

Highlights:

  • Crop diversification is hindered by technological lock-in around major crops.
  • Pathways of European farms that recently diversified their crops provide levers to further enable crop diversification.
  • Farmers' motivations to diversify are agronomic, economic or work-related; combined motivations lead to more diversity.
  • Outlets for diversification products strongly determine the level of external support and flexibility for farmers.
  • Supporting long-term crop diversification requires considering farmers' motivations to diversify.
