Mediterranean Transport and Logistics in a Post-Covid-19 Era: Prospects and Opportunities - IEMed

Mediterranean Transport and Logistics in a Post-Covid-19 Era: Prospects and Opportunities - IEMed | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

In the Western Mediterranean Basin, as in other regions of the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted governments to take severe measures to curtail socio-economic activities over the last months. Consequently, movement restrictions and the reduction of trade flows have severely impacted the transport and logistics sector. This major disruption caused by the COVID-19 to the transport system calls for a pause to analyse the priorities for the future and to build on lessons learnt to guide the recovery of the sector with the aim of improving its resilience and fostering its modernisation to boost growth, innovation, and competitiveness.

AFRICAN agriculture without African farmers

AFRICAN agriculture without African farmers | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it
Mass dispossession of smallholder farmers is not a side effect of the ‘African Green Revolution’. It is the whole point.

With the passing of the United Nations’ highly contested Food Systems Summit last month, the task of “feeding the world” has taken on a newfound urgency.

But one point apparently lost on the summit’s attendees is that the project of “agricultural modernisation” which many of them have supported for decades is only making food insecurity worse in recent years, especially in Africa.

Egypt: Large-scale grain importer looking to increase agricultural production.

Egypt: Large-scale grain importer looking to increase agricultural production. | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Egypt has a large and growing population, and its production of grains and oilseeds falls well short of its food needs, making large-scale imports necessary. It continues to run a bread subsidy scheme, with loaves provided to much of the population at prices well below the cost of production. At the same time, the Egyptian authorities are working to increase agricultural output, notably by focusing on increasing the uptake of new, higher yielding varieties, while providing information on best practices to the country’s farmers.

According to the International Grains Council (IGC), Egypt’s total grains production in 2021-22 will be 16.9 million tonnes, unchanged from 2020-21. Production of wheat is put at 8.9 million tonnes, also unchanged. The country’s maize crop is estimated at 7.1 million tonnes, again the same as the previous year. Egypt also is estimated to have produced 700,000 tonnes of sorghum, the same as in 2020-21.

Russia resumes wheat exports to Algeria after 5yr break | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Algeria has allowed Russian grain imports for the first time in more than five years. The first shipment of 30,000 tons of wheat is on its way to the North African nation. According to Russian watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor, a second ship is currently being loaded in the Black Sea port of Taman, and will set sail in the near future.

The world’s largest wheat exporter has been lobbying for access to the Algerian market, and is planning to send two vessels with a total of 60,000 tons of wheat in September.

The shipments mark the first major supply of Russian wheat to Algeria since 2016, excluding a cargo of 28,500 tons shipped in June.

India's summer grains output seen at record 150.5 Mt  in 2021/22 | Reuters

Indian farmers are expected to harvest a record 150.50 million tonnes of grains from summer-sown crops in the crop year to June 2022, the government said on Tuesday, against 149.56 million tonnes gathered in the previous year.

In 2021/22, the output of summer-sown rice is estimated at a record 107.04 million tonnes, up from 104.41 million tonnes in 2020/21, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare said in a statement.

Higher rice output will help India, the world’s biggest exporter of the grain, boost the staple’s shipments.

India looks likely to account for as much as 45% of global rice exports in 2021 as expanded port-handling capacity allows the world’s biggest rice grower after China to ship record volumes to buyers across Africa and Asia.

Warm and dry weather pushes along both corn maturity and harvest

Warm and dry weather pushes along both corn maturity and harvest | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

As corn harvest commences in the United States, a warm and dry end to September should help to advance corn maturity and harvest across the Corn Belt.

Recent wet weather has resulted in drought improvements in the drought-stricken areas of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest. Unfortunately, a flash drought has developed in the Southern Plains where winter wheat is going in the ground.

As September winds down and harvest ramps up in the United States, the final week of the month (week-ending October 2) will bring summer-like heat and dry weather to the Corn Belt. According to data from WeatherTrends360, this will be the second warmest and third driest end to September in more than 30 years for the Corn Belt.

Strong demand for Australian wheat | Queensland Country Life

Strong demand for Australian wheat | Queensland Country Life | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Shrinking global wheat production is expected to see robust export demand for Australian wheat through the 2021-2022 season.

Global forecasters have been ratcheting production estimates lower through the season on the back of unfavourable weather. The full extent of wheat production losses in the northern hemisphere is only being realised as the harvests in North America, Europe and the Black Sea near completion.

Further cuts to world wheat production are expected to see world wheat export supplies shrink to the lowest level seen in close to a decade and push more demand to Australia. Local grain exporters are reporting strong buying interest from global buyers and they expect this to continue into next year.
