AMIS Market Monitor - July 2020

AMIS Market Monitor - July 2020 | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Despite a major production setback in the EU, global wheat output in 2020 is forecast to remain close to last year’s above-average level while world maize production is heading to a record, leading to a sharp increase in maize inventories. With rice production also bound for a record and soybeans making a strong recovery, prospects for all four AMIS crops indicate a generally comfortable global supply situation. However, in many parts of the world, local markets brace for the looming impacts of COVID-19, amid uncertainties related to demand, logistics and even access to food.

Towards food platforms? An analysis of online food provisioning services in Italy

Towards food platforms? An analysis of online food provisioning services in Italy | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Article released (Geoforum Volume 114, August 2020, Pages 172-180) - ABSTRACT: This paper makes use of a unique dataset on the population of online food provisioning services to shed light on the organization of the food e-commerce in the Italian context. Building on the opposition between pipelines and platforms, we propose a categorization of the different forms of organization within each business model and examine how they differ. Hence, we concentrate on food platforms to discuss the implications this new business model may have for both producers and consumers. We highlight three critical areas that warrant further attention. First, in view of the EU regulatory framework, we discuss the potential implications for consumer protection; second, we reflect on the ways the potential success of the platform model could change labour market relations between producers and platform owners; third, we point out the differences and similarities platforms have with alternative food networks (AFNs). In the conclusion, we reflect on future research developments and on the possible trajectories that online grocery shopping could take in light of the disruption caused by COVID19.

"The effects of the COVID 19 pandemic on the economies of countries in the Mediterranean region are starting to be visible and are likely to have unprecedented consequences and impact. As in every crisis, it is, of course, the poorest and fragile populations who suffer the most serious consequences.

Among the most fragile, the vulnerable populations of rural and agricultural areas of the Mediterranean region, who are already suffering for several years from climate change impacts, the reduction of natural resources but also from development inequalities

JRC MARS Bulletin Crop monitoring in Europe - July 2020 | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Close-to-average weather conditions, with well-distributed rainfall and relatively few hot spells, have been favourable to crops in many parts of Europe. Extreme weather events with significant negative impacts – mostly on winter crops – occurred in much of central Europe, south-western Finland and southern Russia.
The predominantly favourable weather conditions contributed to an improved yield outlook in several regions. Compared to the yield forecasts presented in the June issue of the Bulletin, the strongest upward revision at EU level was for spring barley (+6.4%), reflecting improved or continued favourable conditions in almost all major producing countries. However ...

Food Supply Pressure in France and Germany During COVID-19

JAFSCD: Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development. Publication of the Thomas A. Lyson Center for Civic Agriculture and Food Systems. The food supply has been disrupted by COVID-19. Shopping in supermarkets and grocery stores in the pandemic may not be a pleasant experience, as it can often lead to disappointment and anxiety since a lot of food items are not available or out of stock. The pandemic’s impact on the food supply has attracted attention from scholars and practitioners alike, and there have been many studies based on evidence from developing countries (e.g., Zurayk, 2020). However, there is still a lack of research based on the experiences of more developed and industrialized economies such as France and Germany. This is an important knowledge gap to be bridged, as people in developed countries tend to consume more food than those in developing countries (Delgado, 2003). Developed countries are also usually in the center of global food supply chains due to their stronger influence in trade. . . .

COVID-19: A pandemic with positive and negative outcomes on resource and waste flows and stocks | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Article released (Resources, Conservation and Recycling Volume 161, October 2020, 104979) - As of May 15th, more than 4.5 million people worldwide has been infected and more than three hundred thousand died in the COVID-19 pandemic. To halt the epidemic, many countries have endorsed lockdown measures to ensure social distancing and reduce the pressure on medical institutions. Even after lockdowns, social distancing shall remain the norms for several months until herd immunity is built or/and the availability of COVID-19 specific anti-viral medicine and vaccination. The world gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to drop by 3.2 – 4.9% (UNDESA, 2020) demonstrating the serious effects of the pandemics on the world economy with the disruption of supply and production chains. The question of whether overall impacts on resource and waste management and the dynamics of material and energy flows will be positive remain uncertain. In this context, addressing the following points appear essential

S.Africa’s 2020 maize crop expected to increase by 37% – Reuters survey

S.Africa’s 2020 maize crop expected to increase by 37% – Reuters survey | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

South Africa will likely harvest 37% more maize in 2020 compared with the previous season after favourable weather conditions boosted yields, a Reuters survey of six analysts and traders showed on Monday.

South Africa’s Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) is expected to forecast the 2019/2020 maize production at 15.461 million tonnes, up from 11.275 million tonnes harvested in the 2018/2019 season, which was impacted by dry weather conditions.

The estimate is slightly lower than the CEC’s June forecast of 15.514 million.

“The yields are relatively good across the country. Already over 50% of the crop has been delivered to commercial silos,” said Wandile Sihlobo, an economist with South African agribusiness association Agbiz.

The crop is expected to consist of 9.081 million tonnes of white maize, used mainly for human consumption, and 6.443 million tonnes of yellow maize used mainly in animal feed.
