Coronavirus boosts demand for local and functional foods in France: market study | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased demand for local products in France and could have a positive effect on the development of functional foods, according to Mintel.
On 17 March 2020, French President Emmanuel Macron announced strict confinement measures in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. This meant that residents across the country were required to carry a signed travel pass, or attestation, whenever they left home. Failure to do so could result in a €135 fine.

Harnessing rhizosphere microbiomes for drought-resilient crop production

Harnessing rhizosphere microbiomes for drought-resilient crop production  | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Science, 17/04 - Root-associated microbes can improve plant growth, and they offer the potential to increase crop resilience to future drought. Although our understanding of the complex feedbacks between plant and microbial responses to drought is advancing, most of our knowledge comes from non-crop plants in controlled experiments. We propose that future research efforts should attempt to quantify relationships between plant and microbial traits, explicitly focus on food crops, and include longer-term experiments under field conditions. Overall, we highlight the need for improved mechanistic understanding of the complex feedbacks between plants and microbes during, and particularly after, drought. This requires integrating ecology with plant, microbiome, and molecular approaches and is central to making crop production more resilient to our future climate.

Food Security in Tunisia: A Need to Move Back to Sovereignty

Food Security in Tunisia: A Need to Move Back to Sovereignty | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Since the end of French colonization in 1956, successive Tunisian governments have managed to ensure access to healthy and sufficient food for the vast majority of its citizens. Tunisia has a low level of hunger, with a 2018 score of 7.9 out of 50 on the Global Hunger Index (GHI), and this number has continued to trend downwards. Most Tunisians eat their fill and some even allow themselves luxury food products from time to time. Physical access to something to eat without too much trouble is not the challenge. The question is, given the context of a stagnant economy and high unemployment: at what cost?

Small Price Responses to Large Demand Shocks

Small Price Responses to Large Demand Shocks  | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Journal of the European Economic Association, Volume 18, Issue 2, April 2020, Pages 792–828 - Abstract: We study the pricing response of U.S. supermarkets to large demand shocks triggered by labor conflicts, mass population displacement, and shopping sprees around major snowstorms and hurricanes. We find that these large swings in demand have, at best, modest effects on the level of retail prices, consistent with flat short- to medium-term supply curves. This finding holds even when shocks are highly persistent and despite the fact that stores adjust prices frequently. We also provide evidence that retailers maintain frequent promotional sales even as their demand varies and that they seek to match movements in their local competitors’ recourse to promotional sales...

REFERENCE MACROECONOMIC SCENARIOS FOR THE SPANISH ECONOMY AFTER COVID-19

Banco de España, 2020 - COVID-19 has spread globally, and most countries have adopted extraordinary measures to mitigate its effects on public health. These include bringing part of economic activity to a standstill
and the confinement of the population, and they are exerting a most severe contractionary effect on GDP and employment worldwide. While the resolute action of national and supranational
authorities will contribute to alleviating these effects, their magnitude remains, for the moment, highly uncertain.
This article develops a set of scenarios for the Spanish economy that consider various alternative assumptions about the duration of the confinement and the persistence of the shock the economy
has undergone...
