Spain is one of the main grain importers in the Mediterranean region. As such, the country has a wealth of experience to offer to its North African neighbor on the other side of the sea who faces similar challenges managing the increasing demand for grain.

A high-level public-private Egyptian delegation consisting of government representatives and members of the Egyptian Grain Suppliers Association (EGSA) travelled to Spain for a week-long study tour organized by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), as part of the Public-Private Policy Dialogue in the Egyptian Grain Sector Project.  The trip included visits in Madrid to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Spain and private grain associations, and to the ports of Tarragona and Malaga.

Egypt currently imports over 23 million tonnes of grain, oilseeds, and protein meals and is forecast to increase to 27 million tonnes by 2025.

Focus on Cereals/Grain in Spain

Focus on Cereals/Grain in Spain | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

by World Grain, 25/09/2018

Spain, with a structural deficit in grains, is Europe’s biggest grain importer, with purchases mainly driven by a large livestock sector. A Member State of the European Union, the country is unique in the E.U. for large-scale adoption of genetically modified crops, with Bt maize grown on a relatively large scale. The International Grains Council (IGC) now forecasts Spain’s total 2018-19 grains production at 21.7 million tonnes, up from 15.8 million in 2017-18. Wheat production is forecast at 7.2 million tonnes, up from 4.9 million the year before. Maize production is expected to rise to 4.4 million tonnes from 3.7 million in 2017-18. Barley output is seen unchanged at 1.6 million tonnes. In 2017-18, regular rainfall sustained high productivity in Spain, in contrast with France, which had lost yield because of excessive rainfall.
