Farmers are calling on the government to enforce a capping on prices of agricultural land, as budding growers are finding it impossible to acquire their own fields to till.
With one tumolo of land going for at least €40,000, and an average of 12 tumoli needed to start a full-time agribusiness, young farmers are expected to fork out half a million euros in land, over and above their investment in cultivation machinery and tools.

The “Malta Farm Map” aims to support local farmers sell their local fruits and vegetables by connecting farmers and customers directly in this time of crisis.

Farmers put a lot of work and passion into growing food, and we want citizens to get a glimpse of that. Right now people want to support local farmers but are finding it hard to purchase from them. Customers can now locate their nearest friendly farmer and buy their fresh local produce directly. In that way they will be promoting the local farming community which had already been struggling even before the current crisis.

A comprehensive Agricultural Policy for the Maltese Islands was requested by various stakeholders in order to provide a strategic national direction for this dynamic sector. 
The agricultural sector in the Maltese Islands has been significantly re-shaped following Malta’s accession to the European Union and changes throughout its various facets are still ongoing. Malta: Farmers complain Central Link project turned fields into arid land | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Tonnes of soil excavated for the Central Link project have been dumped into adjacent fields rendering them uncultivable while fertile land disturbed by heavy vehicles has not been reinstated, farmers are complaining. 
An estimated 49,000 square metres of land, mostly agricultural, had to be sacrificed to make way for the new thoroughfare.
