On January 14, 2021, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) signed a memorandum of understanding agreement (MoU) to provide a framework for collaboration to promote their common goals and objectives in accelerating progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, through collaborative actions to support the shift towards more sustainable food systems in the Mediterranean region.

Friends of the Earth Malta will be hosting a curated online short film selection, showing films that touch on food systems, alternative agriculture, and humans’ relationship with animals.
The films will be accessible for only 4 days from the 10th to 13th December.
This event is part of the Meatless Monday project, which aims at encouraging people to reflect on the current food and agricultural models and the effect of meat production on the environment.

THE STATE OF FOOD SECURITY AND NUTRITION IN THE WORLD 2020

This year, the report includes a special focus on transforming food systems for affordable healthy diets. It analyses the cost and affordability of healthy diets around the world, by region and in different development contexts. New analysis is presented on the “hidden” health and climate-change costs associated with our current food consumption patterns, as well as the cost savings if we shift towards healthy diets that include sustainability considerations. The report also offers policy recommendations to transform current food systems and make them able to deliver affordable healthy diets for all – crucial to all efforts to achieve Zero Hunger – SDG2.

Over the last month, COVID-19 has eclipsed climate change and many other global challenges as the most pressing issue we face worldwide. Between learning to manage life on lockdown and monitoring the surreal charts depicting soaring numbers of infections and deaths across the globe, it can be difficult to find brain space for anything else.

FAO, 2019 - Le rapport sur L’État de la biodiversité pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture dans le monde rend compte de l’état et de la gestion de la biodiversité pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture dans le monde en s’appuyant,
aux fins de cette évaluation, sur les informations contenues dans 91 rapports nationaux (auxquels ont
contribué plus de 1 300 personnes) et 27 rapports émanant d’organismes internationaux, ainsi que sur les apports fournis par plus de 175 auteurs ou relecteurs.

Le rapport met en avant:
• les multiples contributions que la biodiversité pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture apporte à la sécurité alimentaire et à la nutrition;
• les principaux facteurs de changement qui influent sur la biodiversité pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture;
• l’état et l’évolution des divers éléments de la biodiversité pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture;
• la situation en ce qui concerne la gestion de la biodiversité pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture;
• la situation en ce qui concerne les politiques, les institutions et les capacités qui contribuent à une
utilisation durable et à la conservation de la biodiversité pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture;
• les besoins en matière de gestion de la biodiversité pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture et les défis
à relever.

Set-up of Public Procurement Programs in School Canteens to Valorize Agrobiodiversity of Cereals

The project CERERE2020 funded by the Horizon 2020 Program is dedicated to promote the diversity in organic and low input food systems in particular for cereals/grains.

Here is an example of Practice Abstract of an initiative carried out in Italy that foster the use of local and diverse cereal varieties in the school canteen diet.
