Inside EGYPT’s plan to tackle the wheat crisis

Inside EGYPT’s plan to tackle the wheat crisis | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Egypt is hoping that a new plan to rely on its own wheat reserves and local production will be enough to cover domestic consumption of the vital grain until 2023.
Facing difficulties in importing wheat because of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine - the two countries are the largest sources of wheat for Egypt - the government now has to increase dependence on local wheat.
To achieve that goal, Egypt’s plan for self-sufficiency in 2022 is twofold.

By Ahmed Lamloum (The Daily News Egypt), 27/11/2018

Egypt’s state grains’ buyer, the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), announced the winning bid of Egypt’s first international rice buying tender on Tuesday, while it seeks to launch two vegetable oils and wheat international purchasing tenders for delivery in January.

The rice tender will be approved by the Minister of Supply, Ali Moselhy, after testing rice samples that were submitted by the bidders, a source in the ministry told Daily News Egypt. The financial offers of this tender were between $419.7 and $444 per tonne.

Also, Egypt is the world’s biggest wheat importer as it consumes 100bn of bread loaves annually. The Egyptian people spend EGP 5bn while the government pays EGP 60bn in subsidies for the bakery owners, according to Finance Minister Mohamed Moeit.

In an interview with Ahram newspaper on Saturday, Moeit said there will be no change in “the bread subsidy system no matter how much cost the country has to bear”.

Egypt about to fail on wheat self-sufficiency?

Egypt about to fail on wheat self-sufficiency? | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

By PhysicsWorld, 29/10/2018

A plan by the Egyptian government to make the country self-sufficient in wheat will likely fail by the 2040s, according to a study by researchers in Egypt and the US.

The plan involves intensifying farming methods and the near-doubling of irrigated land for wheat production by 2035, from 3.9 to 7.7 million hectares. According to the study, however, even a modest growth in population will swiftly consume the extra yield from this expansion.

“As about 30% of wheat is irrigated globally, the challenges Egypt is facing are similar to other countries trying to increase agricultural production,” says Senthold Asseng of the University of Florida, US. “What we learn from our study in Egypt will also apply to other parts of the world.”

Egypt’s Wheat Tenders – A Public Notice Board For Black Sea Grain Notations?

Egypt, the world’s biggest wheat importer, is the largest market for Black Sea wheat exports. Half of Egypt’s wheat imports are purchased by its government’s General Authority for Supply of Commodities (GASC), employing a tender system. Based on a unique data base of GASC tender prices, the price relationships between the GASC tender and Black Sea wheat exporters (Russia, Ukraine, Romania and Kazakhstan) and also France and the USA are investigated. Results of linear and threshold vector error correction models suggest that export prices in the Black Sea region continuously and rapidly adjust to GASC tender prices, while the GASC tender price only adjusts to the French export price. Obviously, the GASC tender price has the function of a wheat world market price in the Black Sea region. Also, the GASC tender system creates strong price competition between the Black Sea exporters and France. We trace this back to the fact that the GASC tender system enhances transparency about competitive prices of the Black Sea wheat market, where an effective price discovery mechanism is still missing.

EBRD and EU improve Egypt’s wheat supply

EBRD and EU improve Egypt’s wheat supply | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

By Bojana Gajic (ERBD), 28/11/2018

Egypt is one of the world’s biggest consumers of wheat – and one of its biggest importers. Egypt is currently producing 8 Mt of wheat every year, but consumes around 20 Mt. This huge gap is covered by imports from other markets such as Ukraine and North and South America.

The role of private companies that specialise in grain import will become even more important in the future as imports are projected to increase to 27 Mt by 2025.

Agribusiness companies have an untapped potential to become a crucial component of the Egyptian economy. But their growth is often hampered by lack of innovation, poor productivity and substantial skills mismatches.

The EBRD helps companies to modernise their operations and improve productivity, like Medsofts, a family-run company, today one of the biggest importers and suppliers of grains and oilseeds for the local market.
