Understanding The Mind-Body Connection Through The Healing Touch of Massage Therapy

How Does Massage Work?

The brain, the nervous system, and the skin are intimately linked from the very beginning.

“The skin is the surface of the brain.”

Approximately 1,000 nerve endings per square inch of skin, on average, are responding to temperature, pressure, stretch, vibration, light touch, chemical irritants, etc…

The brain and the nervous system never sleep, never take a break. It is constantly active and, in spite of comprising only 2% of our body mass, it uses 20% of our energy. It's a very busy, hard working system!

Recognizing The Mind-Skin Connection

The brain and nervous system influence the skin's immune cells through various receptors and chemical messengers - neuropeptides, for example. Scientists are investigating these and other substances in the skin that may respond to psychological stress. They have already found that certain types of stress can interfere with the immune system, affecting the skin's capacity to heal.

Mind-Body Exercises & Heart Health

Harnessing the power of the mind-body connection.

Research has shown that when you imagine an experience, you often have similar mental and physical responses to those you have when the event actually happens.

…it is very important to minimize the negative effects and maximize the healthy, healing aspects of your mind-body connection.

Massage Therapy Improves Blood Flow – The Importance of Good Circulation

The Importance of Good Blood Flow and a Few Tips to Improve It

Poor circulation occurs when the blood doesn't flow freely through the body due to a blockage in the arteries. This is bad news, as it means that your organs (including the heart and the brain) aren't receiving all the nutrients they need in order to function properly.

Do Yoga – Yoga can provide a myriad of benefits to an individual, which include lowering blood pressure and improving circulation.

Get a Sports Massage – In addition to improving flexibility, reducing pain, decreasing tension and improving sleep, a sports massage helps to improve circulation.

Eat Superfoods – Foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids (like wild Alaskan salmon, kale and walnuts) can raise the amount of good cholesterol in your blood (HDL) while lowering the amount of bad cholesterol (LDL).

How to Improve Blood Circulation

Many factors can contribute to poor blood circulation, such as a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, excessive drinking, caffeine, poor eating habits and long hours sitting at work.

5 Massage Therapies That Improve Circulation

Even though you might think that is just a good way to kick back, massage actually comes with a ton of medically proven health benefits, one of which is improved circulation in your cardiovascular and lymphatic systems. When you get a massage, your circulation is improved due to physical manipulation of soft tissue and chemicals released as a part of your body's response to relaxation…

Center for Neuromuscular Massage Therapy

For your therapeutic massage look no further than the Center for Neuromuscular Massage Therapy in the Cherry Creek District in Denver, Colorado. Get a variety of massages from licensed massage therapists…

Sports Massage can also reduce the heart rate and blood pressure, and increase blood circulation and lymph flow.

Swedish massage is very helpful in managing stress, initiating the autonomic nervous system relaxation response and improving circulation.

Benefits of Medicinal Plants and Herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine

The ABCs of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese medicine is one of the oldest continuous systems of medicine in history, with recorded instances dating as far back as two thousand years before the birth of Christ.

Chinese medicine is quite complex and can be difficult for some people to comprehend. This is because TCM is based, at least in part, on the Daoist belief that we live in a universe in which everything is interconnected. What happens to one part of the body affects every other part of the body. The mind and body are not viewed separately, but as part of an energetic system.

Science Affirms Benefits of Chinese Herbs - But Not in the Way You'd Think

In TCM, medicinal plants and herbs are harvested, dried, and prepared according to traditional Chinese pharmacopeia methods, and either taken in small doses over time as preventive measures or consumed daily in the case of chronic illnesses. Many plants and herbs such as Ganoderma Lucidum, or lingzhi mushroom, are also incorporated into everyday cooking.

What Are The Benefits of Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicine can be very useful for treating many different illnesses from minor scrapes and burns to serious diseases. Herbal medicines are mostly used for persistent illnesses such as migraines, arthritis, depression and PMS.

10 Benefits Of Traditional Chinese Medicine

The top benefit that comes from traditional Chinese medicine is that the medicine is all natural. Although the herbs that are used in the medicine may have some side effects, it is nothing compared to the side effects from modern medicine.

The Hub of Herbal Medicine in Hong Kong (China)

You can find many different types of Chinese remedies in this store. Various remedies are important ingredients for foods that improve your health. For example, this is swallow's nest, which purifies and strengthens the body's systems, and provide resistance to disease and premature aging.

Would You Like A Swedish Massage?

What is a Swedish Massage?

A Swedish massage is relaxing massage. When deciding on a Swedish massage, you should ask yourself, "Am I looking for stress relief and relaxation or do I have a specific pain problem that I want worked on?" In that case you probably want to get a medical massage.

Per Henrik Ling, a Swede who immigrated to France, is credited with the development of Swedish massage; this is why the names for the strokes are in the French language instead of Swedish. For example effleurage (sliding or gliding) and petrissage (kneading).

Swedish Massage Therapy Techniques For Back Pain and Relaxation

The specific techniques used in Swedish massage involve the application of long gliding strokes, friction, and kneading and tapping movements on the soft tissues of the body.

Swedish Massage Benefits

There are many benefits to a Swedish massage, which is why is it really popular. Swedish massage comes with benefits for both your physical body and for your emotional well-being.

Swedish massage is very helpful in managing stress, initiating the autonomic nervous system relaxation response and improving circulation.

Is Massage Therapy An Effective Treatment For Anxiety And Other Psychological Disturbances?

How Massage Therapy Connects Your Body And Mind

So often we talk about the mind and body connection, how one impacts the other. In truth, there is no such thing as a mind/body connection – they are the same thing. You are a whole, not just parts of you. Any thought or feeling or physical sensation you have will have an impact on the rest of you. It is impossible to separate.

Massage is not only for your physical health. The benefits also extend to your emotional and mental health.

According to the AMTA, various research has shown the benefits of using massage to help treat mental health conditions in different types of situations.

“Military Medicine published research that indicated significant reductions in ratings of anxiety, worry, depression and physical pain after military veterans received massage, as well as declining levels of tension and irritability.”

“Applied Nursing Research reported that massage therapy given during chemotherapy can significantly reduce anxiety and acute fatigue.”

Do Body Cells Carry Emotional Memory?

It's reasonable to assume that the memory of the emotional experience is stored somewhere in the brain – the organ that is specialized in memory handling and remained inaccessible, as many other memories a human being experiencing during the life. But the shoulder cells hold the bookmark or a memory address of where the actual memories of the incident were stored in the brain.

The Best Vitamins and Supplements For Muscle Tension and Faster Muscle Recovery

Are There Supplements to Relax Tight Muscles?

There are many vitamins and supplements that may be helpful for relaxing tight muscles in your body. However, before taking supplements, ask your doctor to discuss possible side effects and proper dosage.

Arnica may be an effective dietary supplement to help decrease your tight, aching muscles.

Magnesium helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps your heart rhythm regular, supports your immune system and keeps your bones strong.

Kava kava may be a beneficial dietary supplement for relaxing tight muscles.

Other natural solutions for muscle tension include:

Ginger root
Omega-3 fatty acids
Bromelain and other natural sources of enzymes
Modified Citrus Pectin

Massage, particularly craniosacral and trigger point manual therapy, can also relieve tension. Trigger point and craniosacral techniques target specific points in the musculoskeletal system that hold tension, gently manipulating and realigning ligaments, tendons and muscles.

Protein is arguably the most important nutrient to take immediately after your workout, alongside carbohydrates. Your muscles have been broken down and therefore need repairing and rebuilding.

Branched chain amino acids (BCAA's) have become a staple supplement for athletes due to their role in muscle and energy production during exercise and therefore are commonly used immediately around or during one's workout.

Fish oil is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids which offer numerous health benefits including keeping your heart, brain and eyes in good working order.

Not only will magnesium allow you to sleep like a baby through its ability to relax muscles, but it is another critical supplement to help speed up recovery.

Improve Your Performance and Increase Your Endurance with Faster Recovery Time

Benefits of Massage for Pain Relief

Massage therapy is more effective for chronic back pain than other complementary therapies. Massage therapy promotes relaxation and alleviates the perception of pain and anxiety in cancer patients. Massage stimulates the brain to produce endorphins…

10 Reasons to Try Acupuncture

Did you know that more than three million adults visit an acupuncturist annually, according to the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine? Acupuncture was first introduced to Western Medicine in the 1600s and today, more than 3,000 U.S. physicians integrate the therapy into their clinical practices.

Aside from being recognized by the World Health Organization as a practice that has the ability to treat over 40 different common issues including gastrointestinal disorders, joint and nervous systems, chronic pain, circulatory disorders, anxiety, depression and more, here are the top ten reasons to try Acupuncture today!

1) Acupuncturists view each person holistically and individually.

No two people are alike. Every cell in that person's body is interconnected to others and is functioning as part of an integrated whole. In other words, acupuncture treats the whole person, not just parts and pieces. The root causes of a symptom that two people are experiencing may be completely different. During the initial exam, a full health history is taken. Questions are asked regarding overall health and symptoms, lifestyle choices, exercise, nutrition, career paths, and other life factors. All aspects of the patient are considered when putting together an effective treatment plan.

2) Acupuncture helps to re-awaken and energize the self-healing capacity of the body.

An acupuncturist treats more than symptoms and signs. Acupuncture activates the body's natural healing potential by treating the root causes that have led to the problem or disease. Research shows that acupuncture triggers the body's own mechanisms for manufacturing and releasing its own pain relieving chemicals. These chemicals are endorphins and dopamines, opioid-like compounds that produce the feeling of well-being and reduce pain. The body knows the exact dose that is needed at the right time. It is like a perfect pharmacy that can produce any "medication" needed for healing without any unwanted side effects!

3) Acupuncture is an effective preventative medicine with no negative side-effects, only positive ones.

Acupuncture is a completely natural therapy and works directly with the body's natural processes, not against them. No drugs are ever used. Invasive procedures and drug therapies used in Western treatment may produce undesirable side effects and accumulated toxicity in the body. Acupuncture does not have these side effects. In fact, feeling great is the most commonly reported result.

4) Acupuncture helps to support and strengthen the immune system.

The immune system works throughout our body to prevent and fight illnesses. Our digestive tract, skin, and lymphatic system are three important parts of the immune system. The immune system can be weakened at times by disease and/or certain treatments and medications. Lifestyle contributors such as poor diet, stress, and poor self care can also negatively impact the immune system. The goal of acupuncture is to find and treat the underlying imbalances that are affecting the flow of Qi (pronounced "chee"), our vital energy or power, and the immune system by addressing the root causes. Acupuncture can help you regain balance and improve your overall health.

5) Acupuncture effectively assists with recovery from drug, alcohol and smoking addictions.

With the help of acupuncture, recovery from drug, alcohol and smoking addictions can be made easier. Stress, anxiety and depression are some of the largest stumbling blocks in quitting addictive habits and behaviors. Acupuncture is successful at calming and relaxing the mind, reducing anxiety and alleviating depressive feelings.

6) Acupuncture is recognized by well-known and leading national and international health organizations*.

The National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization are among those organizations who recognize that acupuncture is effective in the treatment of over 50 western medical diseases, disorders and symptoms including pain, infertility, allergies, depression/anxiety, migraines, digestive issues, arthritis, fibromyalgia and more.

7) Acupuncture is safe and painless.

When practiced by a qualified practitioner, acupuncture is safe. In 1996, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified acupuncture needles as medical instruments, assuring their safety and effectiveness. The needles are one-time use only and are sterile and do not carry any risk of infection. Acupuncture needles are about ten times smaller in size than an average hypodermic needle, approximately the size of a cat's whisker, and they are very flexible. They don't hurt in the way that hypodermic needles do, however a slight sensation may be experienced as the acupuncture needle is inserted.

8) Acupuncture treatment is an excellent stress-relief therapy.

Along with treating physical and emotional symptoms and signs associated with stress, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) addresses the root cause(s) of the problem. Qi is the vital energy or power that animates and supports the functions of the body. It flows through specific pathways, called meridians, and provides nourishment for the entire body. When Qi becomes "blocked" or the supply is inadequate, the body and organ systems become "stressed out" and our health is then compromised. With acupuncture and TCM, the practitioner's job is to support and restore the integrity of the various organs affected and depleted by the stress response, along with evaluating the quality and quantity of Qi.
