The Maori equivalent of a totem pole. Pou whenua are characterized by beautiful use of color and intricate carvings. Smaller versions were used as fighting sticks.

This is a short book review about bone carving – nothing at all to do with pounamu but – in my head at least – not completely unrelated. For like pounamu, bone carving has always had an important place in Māori culture.
