Novel Finding: Reading Literary Fiction Improves Empathy

Novel Finding: Reading Literary Fiction Improves Empathy | literary fiction | Scoop.it
The types of books we read may affect how we relate to others
Marylee MacDonald's insight:

I wonder how often we allow ourselves the luxury of empathetic reading. The news and social media compete for our attention. Particularly now. However, this research makes it pretty clear we're losing an important opportunity to connect with others in deeper, rather than fleeting and shallow, ways.

Marylee MacDonald's insight:

There's so much fun writing emanating from Ireland. Is it just my genetic predisposition, or has Ireland's oral, storytelling tradition found a renaissance in its recent literature?

Rubik is a series of surreal short stories that deal with the aftermath of a car accident – a series set in motion, like the cube of the title, by play.

This sounds like a terrific debut, and short stories, too. It's darned hard to get publishers to get behind short fiction.

Fiona Mozley works in The Little Apple Bookshop in York but was not allowed to tell her bosses or family about her nomination for the £50,000 prize for her novel Elmet.
Marylee MacDonald's insight:

Fiona Mozley must be pretty psyched to have her novel nominated for the Man Booker Prize. I had to look up the name and discovered that Elmet was an independent kingdom in the early Middle Ages. I guess I'm not surprised to learn that the author is a Medieval scholar.

As writers we only have one shot at the extra publicity granted "debut novels." What's startling is to wake up one day and find that your novel is not only published, but suddenly submerged in a flood of debut novels, every one of them imbued with the ambition of somehow coming to the attention of readers.

The Top 10 Craft Books on Storytelling

The Top 10 Craft Books on Storytelling | literary fiction | Scoop.it
Marylee MacDonald's insight:

Craft books! They're everywhere, and new ones come out all the time. This essay in Litreactor featured some of my favorites, in particular an oldie but goodie, Lajos Egri's THE ART OF DRAMATIC WRITING. I've read and reread Francine Prose's wonderful READING LIKE A WRITER, and have often that Prose's craft book ought to be required reading for book groups.

It's often said--wrongly, I believe--that writing can't be taught. Some folks are natural storytellers and others master some of the basics, but struggle with others. All writers have strengths: some do well with characterization; others with plot; still others with dialogue.

But, I believe that revision CAN be taught, in the sense that if a writer can "re-envision" her rough draft, she can make it better. I can't wait to grab the books I haven't read and see if what they're saying makes sense.

Mother-Daughter Caregiving At the End of Life - Family Caregiver Support | literary fiction | Scoop.it
In honor of Mother's Day, two authors--Diana Y. Paul and Virginia A. Simpson--talk about caregiving and role reversals at the end of life.
Marylee MacDonald's insight:

As baby-boomers age we're caring for our parents and helping our children start families. Women of the sandwich generation hardly have time to take a breath. Two debuts--one a debut novel, the other a memoir--take an unflinching look at the mother-daughter bond and what is asked of us as caregivers.
