Udacity’s New Degree Comes With A Money Back Guarantee | Learning with MOOCs | Scoop.it

For nearly two years, online education startup Udacity has offered a paid training course called a “Nanodegree” for people hoping to land technical jobs like software development. But the question was always whether students would find a job after finishing the course, which costs anywhere from $1,800 to $2,400.

To help erase such doubts, Udacity said Wednesday that it would create a new degree called Nanodegree Plus, which comes with a guarantee that students will find a job within six months. If not, the company will return 100% of tuition—a rarity in online education.

The need for digital competencies is one of the factors forcing a rethinking of how we educate our young, and especially higher education.  Maybe we will start to break free of our medieval and factory models of education.  I hope the liberal arts don't get lost in the shuffle. -Lon

Why 'Nano-Degrees' Can Never Replace Liberal Arts Colleges

Why 'Nano-Degrees' Can Never Replace Liberal Arts Colleges | Learning with MOOCs | Scoop.it
In a market where jobs are constantly shifting and disappearing, the kind of ultra-specialized training offered by companies like Udacity won't go very far.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that nano-degrees are a perfect replacement for a liberal arts degree anymore than a car is a perfect replacement for a horse and carriage. A car will never have the personal relationship and friendship of a horse. There will always be a place for traditional liberal arts but 93% of the world's population will never get a traditional college degree so the real objective is to provide those with an opportunity to learn.
