The Life Between Big Data Log Events

The Life Between Big Data Log Events | Learning with MOOCs | Scoop.it

Big data from massive open online courses (MOOCs) have enabled researchers to examine learning processes at almost infinite levels of granularity. Yet, such data sets do not track every important element in the learning process. Many strategies that MOOC learners use to overcome learning challenges are not captured in clickstream and log data. In this study, we interviewed 92 MOOC learners to better understand their worlds, investigate possible mechanisms of student attrition, and extend conversations about the use of big data in education.

10 reasons why 2015 is the year of the MOOC

10 reasons why 2015 is the year of the MOOC | Learning with MOOCs | Scoop.it

2012 was heralded, largely by people who had never taken any, as the year of the MOOC. 2013 was heralded, largely by people who hadn’t taken any, as the year MOOCs died, 2014 saw realism emerge with a swing towards real demand (vocational) demand and 2015 finished as what Stuart Sutherland called “the actual Year of the MOOC”. Writing Learning Objectives for MOOCs

Writing Learning Objectives for MOOCs | Learning with MOOCs | Scoop.it

"We are learning more and more about who enrolls in Massive Open Online Classes (MOOCs) and how those students behave.  For example, Harvard and MIT recently released de-identified data from their first 16 MOOCs that ran in 2012-2013 (read more about the Harvard and MIT data setshere and access the actual data here).  The data set includes several variables relating to student activities – for example, whether students visited the course website, watched videos, or completed exams.  These types of measures can tell us a lot about what students do, but it is not clear how much they learned as a result of those actions."

Learning Creative Learning: It's not a MOOC, it's a community – MIT Media Lab

Learning Creative Learning: It's not a MOOC, it's a community – MIT Media Lab | Learning with MOOCs | Scoop.it

On Wednesday, October 18, a team from the Media Lab’s Lifelong Kindergarten group is launching a new, experimental online course: Learning Creative Learning. Free, open to anyone, and supported by the Learning Initiative at the Media Lab, the six-week course aims to create a global community of like-minded educators and learners. Unlike a traditional MOOC, the course emphasizes collaboration over instruction; the goal is to foster the same environment of creative learning that it's teaching to participants.
