The first of four online courses exploring WWI and run by the universities of Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds and the Open University has launched today

Professor Christian Tams, Chair of International Law at the University of Glasgow said: “I see a real space for Moocs in the market – I think collaborative projects bringing together the BBC and universities like Glasgow – and others – can help take online courses to a higher level, and establish them as part of our educational system.

News today that M&S - knicker retailer to the masses - has joined the MOOC revolution. The high street store is launching a MOOC with the University of Leeds on the Futurelearn platform. The three week course starts today (15th September) and will “demonstrate the importance of innovation in growing and sustaining a business.”

This is laudable stuff and I wonder to what extent other businesses will open up their archives to support Universities in producing material with which to attract huge numbers of potential learners. After all, we know many large companies have loads of high quality content which could be similarly re-used to create new learning opportunities.

MoocLab Study Shows UK MOOC Market is Losing Momentum

MoocLab Study Shows UK MOOC Market is Losing Momentum | Learning with MOOCs | Scoop.it
From Yahoo Finance: Emerging data from a study conducted by e-learning resource website MoocLab.club show a dramatic drop in the number of new MOOCs provided by UK based universities in 2014 compared to 2013, that UK MOOCs represent just a tiny fraction of the global MOOC market, and that smaller enrolment numbers and shorter courses lead to higher completion rates. The findings of this UK MOOC Report are presented today by Carolyn McIntyre, CEO at MoocLab.club. The study analysed data collected from 30 UK-based universities and institutions which provided at least one scheduled MOOC between February 2012 and November 2015.

It's never too late to learn: make your mark with a media Mooc

It's never too late to learn: make your mark with a media Mooc | Learning with MOOCs | Scoop.it

"We want to know what this thing is, being able to teach massive numbers. And it's hard to know it until you've done it," said Howard Ramsay, learning enhancement manager at the university.

Another reason for involvement was to expand on the internal ability of distance learning for academic and professional staff. "The university is already doing this for 20 years. But this takes it to another level," he said.

The third is more strategic: "It's better to be involved on the inside than looking from the outside," said Mr Ramsay. "It strengthens the Strathclyde brand. It's allowing people to try our courses and see what we can do."

One person who expects to get something out of it is Dr Murray Lough, a GP in Airdrie. This will be his 12th Mooc...a bit of an obsession, he admits.

"I think it's an absolutely wonderful way of learning," he said. "The sheer range of choices … there are literary hundreds of topics. Second, it's flexibility of time. You can come back to it, come and go as your time allows. Flexibility of place is third. You can do it anywhere anytime. I think that's enormously important now."

M&S offers online education courses

M&S offers online education courses | Learning with MOOCs | Scoop.it

Marks and Spencer is entering the online education market, launching a business course with Leeds University.

The massive open online course, or Mooc, is a free course on business innovation.

It uses case studies, video from the company's archive and support from university academics.

Alison Houston, head of the M&S archive, says the course teaches how "creative concepts are balanced with commercial thinking".

These self-study online courses were first associated with universities, with many prestigious institutions making their courses available and drawing huge numbers of students.

MOOCs: a lasting revolution?

MOOCs: a lasting revolution? | Learning with MOOCs | Scoop.it

Writing for the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, Dr Brabon questions the concept of massive open online courses (MOOCs) as part of a digital revolution in higher education that opens up free education for all.

'The idea that MOOCs have the potential to disrupt the traditional degree and challenge the £9,000 fee model is misguided, because the majority of MOOCs are not in their current form easily identifiable as part of an undergraduate curriculum,' says Brabon, who devised the UK's first undergraduate credit-bearing MOOC: Vampire Fictions.
