The Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand has partnered with some of the world’s top academic institutions in edX, a non-profit open source technology platform that provides high quality education around the globe. Victoria will deliver eight free massive open online courses(MOOCs) over the next three years, as well as a number of SPOCs (small private online courses), a micro-Master’s course and new forms of blended learning.

This is a preliminary study of the development of massive open online courses (MOOCs) in the New Zealand tertiary education sector.  It is a research study, involving a series of original interviews with those involved in MOOCs as staff, senior leaders and developers in universities and polytechnics, union and student leaders and several officials from government agencies who had an interest in the field.  The study also includes a brief literature search and a large collection of newspaper articles and reviews.

University of Auckland academic Dr Jason Stephens decided to study why students cheat after he was surprised by the number who admitted doing it, despite believing that it’s wrong.

 

"As educational psychologist interested in students’ intellectual and ethical development, this incongruity between belief and behaviour is of great concern to me," Dr Stephens says.

 

This concern inspired Dr Stephens to develop the Achieving with Integrity project shortly after completing his Ph.D. studies ten years ago. The project offers both schoolwide and classroom-based programmes for promoting academic integrity in secondary schools.

Otago's MBA offered to world

The University of Otago is taking one of its business degrees to the world by offering it over the web.

 

The development comes after vice-chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne last year was cool on Otago embracing the rise of ''massive open online courses'' - known as Moocs.

 

Mr Lafferty said its offering did not fit the definition of a Mooc and was instead a Spoc - a small private online course.

 

This meant class numbers would be limited to about 20 and those who signed up would pay just as much as if they were doing it on campus.

Is the University of Auckland about to join Coursera? - Blog

It isn’t often an academic like me gets a “scoop”, the chance to say “you heard it here first”. In this case, my close monitoring of the MOOC world has uncovered several threads that when woven together suggest a partnership between the University of Auckland and Coursera is a distinct possibility.
