An Exploratory Study of Emotional Affordance of a Massive Open Online Course - European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning

An Exploratory Study of Emotional Affordance of a Massive Open Online Course - European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning | Learning with MOOCs | Scoop.it

"This exploratory study examines emotional affordance of a massive open online course (MOOC). Postings in a discussion forum of a MOOC in computer science are analysed following a research design informed by virtual ethnography. Emotional affordance is investigated, focusing on non-achievement emotions which are not directly linked to achievement activities or outcomes. The study identifies two non-achievement emotions in the MOOC. First, altruistic emotion evolves with the collaborative learning community and possibly compensates for teachers’ minimal emotional intervention in a large, diverse class. Second, intergenerational emotional resonance is observed and this bears a key implication on managing age diversity for the future MOOCs"

MOOC History…or Lack Thereof - Excerpts from MOOC Research

MOOC History…or Lack Thereof - Excerpts from MOOC Research | Learning with MOOCs | Scoop.it

"...MOOC history and MOOC influences.  The linking of MOOCs to historical precedents and influences is found wonting in both academic and popular literature.  Part of this is due to the relative newness of the MOOC, a phenomenon that caught fire at the end of 2011, but it must be noted that, when speaking about MOOCs, developers consistently fail to link the learning model to existing research, trends or prior histories (Bady, 2013b)…."

Joyce Valenza's curator insight, 27 March 2014, 12:57

Are we using the right metrics to evaluate the success of MOOCs?

"Stephen Downes hits the nail on the head in a new post about this issue, Like reading a newspaper. If we compare a regular course to a book which must be read from cover to cover then a MOOC is more like a newspaper that you read very selectively. . . Downes suggests that the connectivist MOOCs he's associated with offer learners a range of learning paths and a flexibility in approach that is unlike a regular course."
