How to Be a Compassionate Manager in a Heartless Organization

How to Be a Compassionate Manager in a Heartless Organization | leadership 3.0 | Scoop.it
Being a compassionate leader is being a good leader. It can be hard to do that when the rest of the company’s culture seems to rely on favoritism or neglect. What can you do if you want to manage your team with compassion, but your leadership hasn’t bought into this philosophy? The author presents six strategies that will help you be a compassionate leader in a less-than-ideal environment. You can make a difference for your people and for the business, and eventually, others outside your area may come looking to see how you’ve been so successful and learn from your actions.

However great an idea, it will never be perfect. There will always be room for improvement, either in the detail of the idea or its implementation. And that's good news for anyone who wants to contribute and for any business that wants to grow.

There is no such thing as the perfect business idea. There are good ideas that reward effort. There are ideas that attract interest and inspire support. There are beautiful ideas change our perception of what is possible and what is desirable. People invest hope, time, and money in attempting to make beautiful ideas real.

In the real world, there are no ideas that conform absolutely to the description or definition of an ideal type. There are no ideas complete beyond practical or theoretical improvement. There are no ideas that exactly fit customer's needs ever or forever. There are no ideas entirely without flaws, defects, or shortcomings. This is good news for anyone who wants to contribute and for any business that wants to grow.

Help  Wanted...Agile Leaders!

Help  Wanted...Agile Leaders! | leadership 3.0 | Scoop.it

Via Don Dea
Don Dea's curator insight, June 4, 2021 5:41 AM

Agile leaders are skillful at responding to the demands of accelerating change. They know how to deal with the inevitable uncertainty, ambiguity, and chaos that accompanies it. Dealing with change is not a problem for them. Nor is it a surprise or something to be avoided. Not only do agile leaders understand the phenomenon of change, they embrace it. And even more than that, they are able to help others navigate their way forward with clarity, insight, and a positive outlook.

Agile leadership is not a binary phenomenon. It is not an either/or phenomenon. Rather, it is a both/and phenomenon -- the ability proceed with clarity and power even when there is no path in sight.

Bottom line, agile leaders have the mindset, skills, and expertise to make wise choices on the fly. They know how to focus, empower, and inspire others. They are discerning, intentional, courageous, collaborative, and able to see the forest for the trees.

Simply put, agile leaders know how to balance the long-term with the short-term. And perhaps most importantly, they know how to create advantage in the marketplace by helping their teams bring their "A" game during times of transition, ambiguity, and change.

Don Dea's curator insight, June 3, 2021 5:21 AM

While every leader and each organization are different, here are three next steps that the most successful leaders are taking…

Practice Disruptive Empathy

Shakespeare’s Henry V leveraged this approach as he walked among his troops. To truly understand the disruptions that the pandemic has wrought upon your people, you must walk among them, in their shoes.

1: Engage with them in ways you never have. Talk to the single mom about her remote work needs while her three grade-school-aged kids are attending school remotely.

2: Rethink Work Systems

Something amazing happened in the spring of 2020. Institutionalized, centuries-old ways of working and learning — all previously requiring in-person supervision and coaching — went remote within a matter of weeks. We all discovered newfound agility, adaptability, and innovations in how we learn and how we get stuff done.

3: 2024: What Will Your Legacy Be?

Your legacy is your mark on the world — how those in need of those redesigns will say that you impacted their lives.

Empathic Leadership: How leaders can cultivate empathy

Empathic Leadership: How leaders can cultivate empathy | leadership 3.0 | Scoop.it
HOW EMPATHY INFLUENCES LEADERSHIP
Empathy is typically defined as “the ability to sense other people’s emotions.” It’s an integral part of our core identity as human beings, and has been a key driver of human evolutionary history.

Even early humans realized that we were more successful as a unit when we were all happy and well-fed. So many inventions over the course of human history were designed to alleviate the suffering of our fellow human beings. Just think about the people who were behind the creation of insulin, the yellow traffic light, and so much more. These inventions were created specifically to alleviate human suffering.

Given the human race’s historical attachment to empathy, it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that empathy has been positively correlated to job performance, and in some cultures it’s considered even more important than job performance. Ineffective leaders aren’t just harming their employees- they’re also hurting their company’s bottom line in the form of reduced productivity, higher turnover, and other related costs.

Positive Psychology: Harnessing the power of happiness, mindfulness, and personal strength - Harvard Health | leadership 3.0 | Scoop.it
Discover the simple techniques to help experience deeper joy, cheerful contentment, and long-term happiness It’s often said that happiness is a choice: You can either choose to be happy or choose to be sad, stressed, or anxious. But simply choosing happiness doesn’t always make it so. Many times, you can’t simply force a smile and make believe that everything is coming up roses. Thankfully, there are much more effective ways, based squarely on research-proven Positive Psychology strategies and concrete techniques that can help you deal effectively with life’s challenges and attain long-term happiness. That’s why the health experts at Harvard Medical School have created the all-new Positive Psychology Course — the exclusive interactive resource that helps you apply the same tools that are widely used by mental health professionals to help treat a variety of condition, from stress, anxiety and anger to coping with grief and loss. Step-by-step, Harvard’s Positive Psychology Course will give you strategies to build happier, more positive lifestyle. Enroll today and you’ll discover how to... Get into the happiness “flow” — that happy zone where you’re super engaged and absorbed both at work and in your leisure time. Keep the burden of “too many choices” from robbing you of pleasure. Discover the powerful impact of a stress-relieving “choice diet.” Let go of resentment, envy and grudges — emotions that hurt you more than they hurt people who may have wronged you. Develop the resilience to handle difficulties more easily and bounce back more rapidly after dramatic or unpleasant events. Stop procrastination or beating yourself up when things go wrong with powerful “self-compassion” techniques. Develop an unshakable attitude of gratitude with specific techniques that help lead to more positive emotions, stronger relationships and a greater ability to deal with adversity. Increase your focus and alertness with two simple stress-relieving “mindfulness” techniques you can use today. Short-circuit the anxiety caused by Facebook envy, Twitter rage and other social media hazards with three simple strategies. Savor more pleasure in your life with specific “enjoy the moment” activities — and why multitasking is the enemy of savoring. Experience the “warm glow” of happiness by re-discovering a universal trait of a life well-lived. Enjoy happier, more resilient relationships with the help of surprisingly simple activities. And more powerful techniques from the mental health experts at Harvard Medical School. Put the power of Positive Psychology to work for you now. Enroll in the Harvard Positive Psychology Course now and see how you can gain a happier, more contented outlook on life!
