An interesting study when it came out about 5 years ago. The student response systems available now are far more interactive and can give students a genuine voice in the learning space. we've adopted Hotseat at our institution and its even been picked up for use in Senior Leadership meetings.

Massive Open Online Course -- A Threat Or Opportunity To Universities? - by Alex Zhu, Futurist, Technology Innovation, SAP

Massive Open Online Course -- A Threat Or Opportunity To Universities? - by Alex Zhu, Futurist, Technology Innovation, SAP | Designing for learning | Scoop.it

"In the past year, Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) has emerged to be a major trend in the education space, witnessed by the rapid takeoff of online universities such as Coursera, Udacity, and EdX.  [...] We had the opportunity to speak with Professor Dr. Christoph Meinel, CEO of HPI [Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI), a top-notch university in Germany specialized in IT systems engineering], to get his personal perspectives on this MOOC movement, and its impact on the future of education."

Comment: interesting if only because this is one of the few critical evaluations of the xMOOC phenomenon outside of North-America. Key points are that MOOCs i) do not threaten traditional universities, ii) will be run according to various business models, iii) are a great means for professional education, iv) allow one to mix and match educational offerings. Read Open Educational Resources in stead of MOOCs and the story would be unchanged. Nevertheless, interesting, also because SAP (a giant German IT firm) takes an active interest (peter sloep, @pbsloep)
