Osborne's bid to end democracy by the back door

Osborne's bid to end democracy by the back door | Issues that should Concern All | Scoop.it
The Coalition government has finally put its cards on the table, calling for the completion of a 'free trade' agreement with the United States of America that will end democracy as we know it today...
G. L. Taylor's insight:

What democracy, all western so called democracy pay homage to so called “Free Market Economic Policies” this is an enigma to any true democrat control.  Indeed it is an ultimate refusal to accept or recognise any democratic control.  It is a statement about freeing markets from any imposed controls democratic or otherwise.  When will people wake up to this fact.  Have our politician all been hoodwinked or are they just odd winking the electorate?

Kingfisher AGM Update

Kingfisher AGM Update | Issues that should Concern All | Scoop.it
Hi,

I just wanted to update everyone on the Kingfisher AGM that took place last Wednesday the 15th of June.

Siobhain McDonaigh, MP attended Kingfishers AGM last Wednesday to ask the board to reverse the cuts in pay and rewards for B&Q staff introduced earlier this year. She also shared with the board testimony from some B&Q employees. I myself did not attend so here are some of the comments from those I know attended.

"The AGM went well yesterday. Siobhain asked her questions and then shared testimony of how workers would be worse off, and incredibly someone else who had been affected then stood up and shared a similar story".

"As he spoke and the members of the board were faced with a real person talking about the issue, the board members went pale and looked down".

"The strength of having an MP in the room was definitely made stronger by the presence of a former employee".

I have been informed that one of the board members verbally agreed to meeting with the CEO of B&Q, Michael Loeve to discuss the issue. Let's hope we get a response on this in the coming weeks. From the feedback I have received the AGM went well and if nothing else a seed has been planted in the minds of the Kingfisher hierarchy, one which I hope gets a reaction from B&Q.

Thank you all for your support.

Regards,

Kevin

G. L. Taylor's comment, June 20, 2016 11:14 AM
This is not new, every time any sort of advancement is made for those on the worse pay and conditions of employment those who see themselves higher in the pecking order or more elite try to drag as much back as they can get away with even to the extent of sometimes making matters even worse. This is often not so much those at the top trying to negate advances as those in-between who are often workers themselves sometimes even in the same union and negotiating group. This is because so many middle class undervalue the lower-class, deride them and believe it is their god given right to exploit those below comparing their salaries and expenses only to those the believe equal to them or above. What all those above the minimum (including bosses and directors etc. should ask themselves is would they be willing to swop places on a permanent arrangement? I fear there would be a lot of excuses such as “they could not do my job because they have neither the skill nori intelligence” and not many takers.

Consider Steve Lewis for next Chief Executive of HMRC Board #peoplestaxman

Consider Steve Lewis for next Chief Executive of HMRC Board #peoplestaxman | Issues that should Concern All | Scoop.it
I'm Steve Lewis, a former Army Officer and now a small business owner. I'm putting myself forward to be the next Chief Executive of the HMRC Board. It's about time that the Board, that is meant to scrutinise the way our Government enforce tax policy, stopped helping multinationals reduce their tax bills and started working for the British public and British small businesses to deliver fair tax for all - big and small.
I live in Crickhowell in Wales, with my wife Sam, and have run a local coffee shop for 11 years. It's a labour of love for us and a way of giving back to our community. We employ 12 great people, source all we can from local suppliers and pay our fair share of tax. We want to secure the future for our 6 children, and ensure our community flourishes.
The same can't be said for many multinationals. We've just taken part in the BBC2 Documentary: The Town that took on the Taxman and what I uncovered is that while I pay 20% of my coffee shop profits in tax many of the large coffee shop chains use legal loopholes to avoid tax or negotiate with HMRC to reduce their tax bill to 0%.
The playing field is not fair, it is not just and it damages our communities, but this month there is an opportunity to change it.
The Chief Executive of the HMRC Executive Board just stepped down. Instead of replacing her with a lifelong civil servant or someone cosy to big business - the Government should appoint someone who champions ordinary citizens and understands small businesses. That's why I'm putting myself forward and asking you to sign my petition and champion me as 'the people's taxman'.
I believe my 19 year military career, together with my 25 years of extensive corporate business experience, working with multinationals on ethical leadership, as well as running a small business in my community, puts me in a unique position to be a people's champion on the board of the HMRC.
I will have no fear or compromise in holding aggressive tax avoiders, tax abusers and tax bullies to account. Government officials rarely look outside for top jobs like this. So I'm going to need your help to convince them that the public want a new approach to fair tax.
Sign this petition and help tell HMRC the public want someone to speak for small business owners and hard working taxpayers.
Vote for the people's tax man!
Thank you!

G. L. Taylor's comment, January 23, 2016 4:28 PM
Governments’ are supposedly elected to by the electorate and should govern in the interest of the electorate not to prop up businesses big or small. The problem hopefully is not so much that any individual MPs and ministers are corrupted by big businesses but all parties rely on the support of business donation from rich business individuals, large companies and conglomerates, This needs to be stopped. No political parties should be funded other than by their membership’s individual dues. All other funding for party electoral funds from any source should be illegal

Volkswagen 'facing corporate manslaughter charge' over emissions scandal

Volkswagen 'facing corporate manslaughter charge' over emissions scandal | Issues that should Concern All | Scoop.it
Volkswagen could be prosecuted on a corporate manslaughter charge over rigged diesel emission tests, ministers have said, as the Government faced questions from MPs over the number of deaths that could be attributed to the scandal.   Transport minister Robert Goodwill told the Environmental Audit Committee that a corporate manslaughter charge may be considered if legal advice suggests it could be successful.
G. L. Taylor's insight:

Pray tell me how a company commits manslaughter?  It cannot have missed most people let alone legal beagles, that company is not a real person (responsible or otherwise).  Whilst a company may (like insurance companies) be financially culpable, it surely cannot for one minute be guilty of a criminal offence legally or morally any more than a vehicle, knife or gun.  Company Directors/Executives etc. invariably claim a kings-ransom in perks and salaries for running these companies and they should be held responsible for any deliberate action or neglect by or within a company (in this case alleged manslaughter or murder if the former is the case). Of course don’t hold your breath they will either find a patsy or a complete whitewash as like governments the law is enforced and applied in the interest of business not people.

Hands-on grandparents would earn up to £22k over the summer holidays if they were paid a salary – work out how much cash you’d earn with our calculator.
G. L. Taylor's insight:

Methinks   It is deplorable that in 21centry in a supposedly democratic and civilized grandparents and even great-grandparents are required has unpaid support for children during holidays because many wage-earners are not paid enough to support a family with the cost of child care.  However many that can more than afford child care still support the pore wages paid to the actual careers and no doubt support the cuts deliberately aimed at the least well off.  Those support such policies should take a long hard look at the results of kicking the weak and vulnerable with the so called “Austerity Programs” that are designed and implemented to save the wealthier and powerful whose behavior caused the problems to avoid suffering any of the austerity they caused.  The fact that so many voted for such selfish policies makes me feel ashamed of what is either a naïve or selfish majority that voted for a party whose leader made it quite clear he would not be around to take the flack if things actual go belly-up.  We are now lumbered with a dead-duck prime minister and government that as little authority because of it at least the other incompetents did not make a statement indicating they would not see their elected time out.

G. L. Taylor's insight:

Government Minister and the majority of MPs relate their selves to the company directors and business executive class; most of whom have little knowledge of the core operation of the business; are overpaid, overvalued, underperform, refuse to accept any real responsibility for their actions or lack of action and are general wastes of space and money.  Like them Government Minister and the majority of MPs claim the same salaries and status for their hypothetical knowledge and responsibility, yet like them show little of the former and accept none of the latter.  They get away with this because of the worshiping of elitism, putting the self-selecting elite, on pedestals and before any moral values Christian or otherwise.

Synopsis

THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES

Definition: Fairytale, allegorical

1. Collective ignorance of an obvious fact, or deception, despite undeniable evidence.

World-famous British comedian and activist Russell Brand joins forces with acclaimed director Michael Winterbottom on a polemical documentary about the financial crisis and gross inequality we currently face.  Starting with the genesis of today’s economic policies, with the arrival of Milton Friedman’s school of thought in Reagan’s leadership and Thatcher’s UK, the film explores how these policies have come to dominate the western world. The rich have got richer; where a CEO of a major British company used to earn 10 times the average wage of his workers, now they earn 200 times.  According to Oxfam, the richest 80 people in the world own as much as the poorest 3.5 billion.  It would now take 300 years for the average cleaner, cleaning the offices of his senior boss, to earn the same salary taken home by the same boss last year.

Milton Friedman once said that every crisis was an opportunity.  The financial crisis of 2008 should have been a chance to reform the system for the benefit of everyone.  But instead, austerity for everyone throughout Britain and Europe was the price to be paid for supporting the financial sector, with £131 billion spent by UK tax payers to keep the financial system afloat, while $30 trillion in support and subsidies went to Wall Street in the US.

Using a mixture of documentary, interviews, archive footage and comedy, Russell Brand takes us from his hometown Grays in Essex, to the heart of London ‘City’ and on to the Big Apple. This daring film will shake up the world by revealing the bewildering truth about how the people at the bottom are paying for the luxuries of those at the top.

Things can change…things do change.

Pension liberation scam victims facing huge tax bills

Pension liberation scam victims facing huge tax bills | Issues that should Concern All | Scoop.it
People who've been tricked into accessing their pension funds too early are going to receive another blow in the shape of tax demands from HMRC.
G. L. Taylor's insight:

Much of the problem here has been caused by the present and previous governments failure to ensure a worthwhile state pension was paid to ordinary workers when they had an entitlement to a full state pension. They first allowed full state pension to become less than benefits, meaning far too many pensioners were left reliant on benefits to make ends meet. Not content they then encouraged if not enforced most to take out secondary pensions through firms or privately.  No sooner was that done than they created situations where firms including local authorities, quangos, private companied were allowed if not encouraged to raid such pension resource for dubious reasons. This has resulted in most ordinary workers knowing however much they struggle to save for retirement successive governments will just allow ordinary workers’ pension funds to be flinched or devalued by either government or others actions.

London is set to come to a standstill this week as tube strikes look set to continue over pay and conditions for workers on the night tube.

Via Leicester Worker
G. L. Taylor's insight:

Methinks   Its time some of those commenting in “The Independent” on this article stopped and thought for themselves instead of swallowing right wing propaganda from right wing media and consecutive governments that are mere lapdogs to extreme far right business concepts that that should be outdated and indeed made illegal.  Most of those commenting seem have accept the far right propaganda that striking is the ultimate selfish weapon used by workers akin to blackmail.  Strikes are caused by the failure of companies’ managers to explaining or justify management’s actions, followed by a complete refusal to negotiate their way out of such managerial failures.  Any one that gives it thought will realize that striking is far removed from even a lack of loyalty to the company or its patrons.  Lack of loyalty is those who accept any job when needed, jog along with little commitment consuming the cost of training and gaining experience only to move on or up for better prospects, pay and conditions.  This is the reason so many companies feel they cannot justify expensive training and proper equipment of employees.  They believe it to be far more other cost effective to poach trained and experienced employees from others and even other countries.  These are of course the real disloyal, selfish rs-holes that gain train and experience at the cost of others, only to move on when better prospect are envisaged. They lack both the courage and loyalty to openly and honestly ask their employers to address grievances finding it easier and more beneficial to double-cross them.

Do we really want to continue with this same fraudulent democracy that in reality is run by large corporate business in their business interest via MPs and MEPs etc., none of whom have the balls or inclination to stand up to business interest and democratically represent those they are employed to represent.  If we can still be perceived a democracy then it is a one party democracy similar to a communist state where you can vote for any as long as they in (in our case) support unprincipled business aims.  We all need to cast a massive protest vote against the main parties, perhaps they will cotton on we want a peoples democracy not a farce business “democracy” controlled by and for businesses of any sort.
