Maker education (often referred to as “Maker Ed”) is a new school of educational thought that focuses on delivering constructivist, project-based learning curriculum External link  and instructional units to students. Maker education spaces can be as large as full high school workshops with high-tech tools, or as small and low-tech as one corner of an elementary classroom. Teens and Tech: Distinguishing Addiction from Habit | MindShift | KQED News

Teens and Tech: Distinguishing Addiction from Habit | MindShift | KQED News | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Look up from this screen right now. Take a look around. On a bus. In a cafe. Even at a stoplight. Chances are, most of the other people in your line of sight are staring at their phones or other devices. And if they don't happen to have one out, it is certainly tucked away in a pocket or bag.

But are we truly addicted to technology? And what about our kids? It's a scary question, and a big one for scientists right now. Still, while the debate rages on, some doctors and technologists are focusing on solutions.

"There is a fairly even split in the scientific community about whether 'tech addiction' is a real thing," says Dr. Michael Bishop. He runs Summerland, which he calls "a summer camp for screen overuse," for teens.

Opinion | The Two Codes Your Kids Need to Know - The New York Times | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
A few years ago, the leaders of the College Board, the folks who administer the SAT college entrance exam, asked themselves a radical question: Of all the skills and knowledge that we test young people for that we know are correlated with success in college and in life, which is the most important? Their answer: the ability to master “two codes” — computer science and the U.S. Constitution.

What are you Making? – Miss Makey

What are you Making? – Miss Makey | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Valid question… Right?! I often get asked this when gushing about Miss Makey and the Magic Bin, or sharing my passion for making as an instructional strategy. I could respond to this question both literally and figuratively. Literally, the students are making just about anything out of absolutely everything.

They could be tackling a design challenge, 3D printing, coding a robot, or repurposing used materials in an innovative way. Figuratively, I am making experiences. These experiences empower students to explore their interests and talents, as well as think divergently and gain fluency with diverse materials. I design learning spaces and projects that are conducive to creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.

People normally consider LEGO just a toy, however, it is so much more than just a toy. It exercises your brain and gives you many benefits as a result. Rather than watching cartoons on TV and tablets most of the time, engaging in LEGO can prove to be such an excellent utilization of time and energy.

Activities for #MakerEd - The Book Chook

Activities for #MakerEd - The Book Chook | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Students will have ideas for projects they want to undertake in a Makerspace, and as they get more involved in making, more and more ideas will flow. But it’s a good idea to have some resources built around making specific projects, especially in the preparing stage. Working out a plan, involving staff and school community, finding spaces, flexible seating and storage ideas are all important ideas covered in the articles listed in Resources for Maker Ed. Today I want to share a short list of ideas and activities that focus more on practical making activities.

Take a Shelfie Not a Selfie - Gwyneth Jones @GwynethJones

Take a Shelfie Not a Selfie - Gwyneth Jones @GwynethJones | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
I've talked about the  Art of the Shelfie before, but I had a recent rant I just wanted to share with you. I started with "Hey girl" as a nod to the "Hey girl" meme and my preoccupation with the hit book, "Girl, Wash Your Face" by @msrachelhollis. It was really just to get your attention, I know educator guys might benefit from this rant, too! I'm equal opportunity judgey.

You know what's great about having a professional Twitter & Instagram? You can just focus on the kids. (It should already be our focus, right?) But it's sometimes kinda comforting to hide behind the kids. Social Media shy? Take pics of your kids being awesome & post them. Not sure about photo consent? Take pics over their shoulders, they'll recognize their shoulders, hair, & hands!

To quote the wise Dalton in the cinematic Oeuvre that is the movie Roadhouse: Opinions vary. Of course it's OK to take a selfie now and then! But when the focus is off the kids, I question. Do you want kids to see that you're as self-obsessed as they can be or should you model a generous focus and an outward pointing lens?
