"In recent years, schools have tried to integrate the latest electronic and Internet-based technology into classroom instruction. By doing so, educators seek to engage students by using familiar forums to teach and prepare them for life after school. With the movement toward mobile-based apps, teachers are also striving to stay on the cutting edge of instructional technology by integrating the latest and greatest apps in the classroom."

How To Search Historical Newspaper Images Using Artificial Intelligence - TeachThought

How To Search Historical Newspaper Images Using Artificial Intelligence - TeachThought | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Teachers and students (or anyone else in the public, for that matter) can now explore more than 1.5 million historical newspaper images online using artificial intelligence.

The latest machine learning experience from LC Labs, Newspaper Navigator allows users to search visual content in American newspapers dating from 1789-1963. The user begins by entering a keyword that returns a selection of photos. Then the user can choose photos to search against, allowing the discovery of related images that were previously undetectable by search engines.

50 Things You Can Say To Encourage A Child - TeachThought

50 Things You Can Say To Encourage A Child - TeachThought | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
There are many ways to encourage a child, but for students of any age, honest, authentic, and persistent messages from adults that have credibility in their eyes are among the most powerful.

The National Center on Quality Teaching and Learning has put together the following list, 50 Ways To Encourage A Child. It was designed for younger students (head start/kindergarten), but with the exception of 4, 17, 21, and maybe 40, they’re actually useful for K-12 in general. It all depends on your tone, the situation, and who else is listening.

How Art Can Help Center a Student’s Learning Experience

How Art Can Help Center a Student’s Learning Experience | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Over the past two decades, policies focused on math and reading test scores, along with a global recession, have pushed many schools to cut what they considered to be “extras.” In many places, that has meant visual art, music, drama, and dance. These subjects became afterthoughts as school leaders put pressure on teachers to raise kids’ scores in the ‘focus’ subjects – math and reading.

Now, many educators are starting to realize the folly of these practices, backed up by an increasingly robust body of research about the power of art to improve learning.

I agree that music ignites all areas of child development and skills for school readiness, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy.
