Lululemon buys interactive home gym startup Mirror for $500 million

Lululemon buys interactive home gym startup Mirror for $500 million | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Lululemon is dipping into home workout tech by acquiring Mirror for $500 million.
Richard Platts insight:

Lululemon is best-known for gym clothes, but the gym isn’t an option in areas hard-hit by the pandemic — so it’s finding a way to foster workouts at home. The company has bought home fitness startup Mirror for $500 million to “accelerate the growth of personalized in-home fitness.” While Lululemon didn’t say how the technology would evolve, it said Mirror would operate as a standalone company with Brynn Putnam remaining as CEO.

Sales of Mirror’s connected exercise display could keep demand for apparel going regardless of how long gyms remain closed. As TechCrunch observes, though, this also gives Lululemon a convenient opportunity to compete against Peloton, Tonal and others making smart home fitness equipment. Don’t be surprised if Mirror steps up development of its signature product and makes it more widely available.

WHY IT MATTERS: used to be (a few years ago) that these were DIY projects. Now they look like real products.

Huawei, the world’s biggest smartphone vendor, says it’s running out of processor chips because of US sanctions against the company, And according to Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business unit, as of next month the Chinese phone manufacturer will no longer be able to make its own Kirin chipsets due to the ongoing economic pressure from the US.  “Unfortunately, in the second round of U.S. sanctions, our chip producers only accepted orders until May 15. Production will close on Sept. 15,” Yu said at a conference August 7th. “This year may be the last generation of Huawei Kirin high-end chips.” Huawei’s upcoming Mate 40 phone, scheduled for release in September, could be the last phone with a Kirin chip.  The US has accused Huawei of building backdoors into network infrastructure, ostensibly to aid Chinese government spying efforts. Huawei has denied the Trump administration’s accusations of spying. But the Trump administration placed Huawei and 114 of its affiliates on its Entity List in May 2019, which meant US firms were unable to sell technology to the company without explicit US government approval.  It also meant Google was barred from doing business with Huawei, preventing Huawei from being able to obtain an Android license and keeping Google apps off Huawei devices. The order used the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to justify the ban, and reads that “openness must be balanced by the need to protect our country against critical national security threats.”  Trump later extended the order to May 2021. Then in May, the US Commerce Department issued an amended export rule to block shipments of semiconductors to Huawei to “strategically target Huawei’s acquisition of semiconductors that are the direct product of certain US software and technology.”

ARM Seeks To Offload IoT Units To SoftBank

ARM Seeks To Offload IoT Units To SoftBank | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Arm announced a proposal to transfer its IoT Platform and Treasure Data businesses to new entities under SoftBank Group so that it can double down on chip design.
Richard Platts insight:

Arm said it wants to double down on its chip design business, boosted by recent wins with Apple and in the supercomputer space, by getting out of the IoT software space.  The Cambridge, U.K.-based chip designer announced Tuesday that it has proposed a reorganization that would involve transferring its two IoT Services Group businesses, IoT Platform and Treasure Data, to new entities under its Japanese owner, SoftBank Group. This does not include Arm's semiconductor IP for IoT chips, which received a recent refresh with the company's new Cortex-M55 and Ethos-U55 designs.  Arm said the move, if approved, would drive growth and profitability by allowing the company to "deepen its focus on its core semiconductor IP business." The company said the business transfer is expected to be completed by September, though it will first need to undergo board review, customary closing conditions and consultation with local staff representatives,

"Arm believes there are great opportunities in the symbiotic growth of data and compute," said Simon Segars, CEO of Arm, in a statement. "SoftBank’s experience in managing fast-growing, early-stage businesses would enable ISG to maximize its value in capturing the data opportunity. Arm would be in a stronger position to innovate in our core IP roadmap and provide our partners with greater support to capture the expanding opportunities for compute solutions across a range of markets."

The company said its silicon partners, which pay license fees to use Arm chip designs, have shipped more than 165 billion Arm-based chips to date, amounting to roughly 22 billion per year over the past three years, driven by computing requirements for IoT, 5G and artificial intelligence applications.  Arm's chip design business was recently boosted by Apple's announcement that it would use Arm-based processors for new Macs launching later this year. The company's semiconductor IP is also used for Fujitsu's server CPUs that power the Fugaku supercomputer, newly minted as the fastest in the world. Arm has built its IoT Services Group businesses in part through acquisitions of IoT startups Treasure Data and Stream Technologies in 2018. The core offering is the company's Pelion IoT Platform, which includes capabilities for connectivity, device and data management. The company also provides the Mbed OS open-source, embedded operating system for IoT devices.

Lufthansa Technik A Bright Spot for Group But Faces Pressure

Lufthansa Technik A Bright Spot for Group But Faces Pressure  | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Lufthansa has blamed the “almost complete grounding of [the] global commercial aircraft fleet,” for losses at its maintenance arm in the second quarter.
Richard Platts insight:

“We were able to counteract the effects of the coronavirus pandemic in the first half of the year with strict cost management as well as with the revenues from Lufthansa Technik and Lufthansa Cargo.”  That said, Lufthansa Technik revenue was still down 30% for the first half of the year, and down 57% in the second quarter.  Write-downs of goodwill at the technical arm’s joint ventures were also a contributor to €219 million of goodwill impairment for the group in the quarter.  Lufthansa also wrote down the value of its receivables, although it said this was offset by a fall in the cost of materials and of staff costs.  Lufthansa noted that “flight hours planned but not carried out and growing pressure on airlines are increasingly having an impact on Lufthansa Technik.” Furthermore, Lufthansa does not expect global passenger demand to return to 2019 levels until 2024 “at the earliest.”  One casualty of all this--at least in the short term--may be the company’s drive towards automation, with the second-quarter results showing a 73% fall in Lufthansa Technik’s capital expenditure, to €22 million, from the year-before period.  Still, it has some leeway in this respect: few MRO companies could match the German giant’s technology development before the crisis and even fewer will have the resources to play catch-up.

Richard Platts insight:

This post is in response to something that I heard going on at Intel from @François Piednoël said, a former Principal engineer from Intel in his what seems to be from a trained eye about Intel, (and I do have one),  is that Intel has been on a run recently emphasizing MBA students in their hiring practices when they really should be hiring more Engineers and Finance people with a STEM background, in fact I know a really good GM & VP @Intel who is one these types of people.. And stated another way is the Andy Grove would be turning over in his grave at this and Craig Barrett would be issuing some rather stern direction to the HR people and VP's in the divisions to stop that stuff right away.  -- as to this post there is an innovative scholarship for undergraduate students and young professionals with up to 3 years of professional experience with STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) profiles to discover the potential of new technologies in the financial environment.

The Garmin Hack Was a Warning to the Fortune 500

The Garmin Hack Was a Warning to the Fortune 500 | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it

Via Lionel Reichardt / le Pharmageek
Richard Platts insight:

IT’S BEEN OVER a week since hackers crippled Garmin with a ransomware attack, and five days since its services started flickering back to life. The company still hasn’t fully recovered, as syncing issues and delays continue to haunt corners of the Garmin Connect platform. Two things, though, are clear: It could have been worse for Garmin. And it’s only a matter of time before ransomware’s big game hunters strike again.  By this point, the world has seen a few large-scale meltdowns stem from ransomware-style attacks, where hacker groups encrypt sensitive files and shakedown the owners for money. In 2017, WannaCry swept the globe before intrepid hacker Marcus Hutchins found and activated its kill switch. That same year, NotPetya caused billions of dollars of damage at multinational corporations like Maersk and Merck, although the ransomware aspect turned out to be a front for a vicious data-wiper. Time appears to have emboldened some hackers, however, as large companies take their place on the list of popular targets, alongside hospitals and local governments.  "There’s no doubt that it’s a big chance that they’re hitting Fortune 500–type companies now."  Recent victims include not just Garmin but Travelex, an international currency exchange company, which ransomware hackers successfully hit on New Year’s Eve last year. Cloud service provider Blackbaud—relatively low-profile, but a $3.1 billion market cap—disclosed that it paid a ransom to prevent customer data from leaking after an attack in May. And those are just the cases that go public. “There are certainly rather large organizations that you are not hearing about who have been impacted,” says Kimberly Goody, senior manager of analysis at security firm FireEye. “Maybe you don’t hear about that because they choose to pay or because it doesn’t necessarily impact consumers in a way it would be obvious something is wrong.”

Bigger companies make attractive ransomware targets for self-evident reasons. “They’re well-insured and can afford to pay a lot more than your little local grocery store,” says Brett Callow, a threat analyst at antivirus company Emsisoft. But ransomware attackers are also opportunistic, and a poorly secured health care system or city—neither of which can tolerate prolonged downtime—has long offered better odds for a payday than corporations that can afford to lock things down.

Dark Sky on Android shuts down following Apple deal

Dark Sky on Android shuts down following Apple deal | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
As promised, Apple has shut down Dark Sky for Android after buying the developer.
Richard Platts insight:

Like it or not, you’ll have to move on from Dark Sky if you’re an Android user. The 9to5Google reports that Apple has shut down Dark Sky on Android and Wear OS as promised, leaving users without the app’s highly localized weather. Apple had initially planned to shutter these versions on July 1st following its acquisition of Dark Sky in March, but offered a month-long extension right as service was due to end. Your Dark Sky subscription should already be cancelled if you were paying $3 per year. The developers had already promised a “full refund” to members. Website access is still available after an indefinite extension, although embedded material no longer appears to be an option. Third-party apps using Dark Sky’s data have until the end of 2021 to transition to other services.  This isn’t the end for hyperlocal weather on Android. Accuweather and other titles can fill the gap. However, it is one less major choice — and you’ll eventually need to move to Apple devices if you’re determined to use Dark Sky for your rain and snow alerts.

Amazon Is Going To Add 3,000 More Satellites Into Earth’s Orbit – And People Are Not Happy

Amazon Is Going To Add 3,000 More Satellites Into Earth’s Orbit – And People Are Not Happy | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved an application by Seattle-based Amazon to launch more than 3,000 satellites into orbit, despite ongoing concerns about launching so-called mega constellations.
Richard Platts insight:

July 30, five FCC commissioners voted unaminaously to approve Amazon’s Project Kuiper – a mega constellation of 3,236 satellites that will orbit Earth, designed to beam internet to the ground.  Amazon will be required to launch half their satellites by 2026, and the rest by 2029, as per the FCC’s authorization.“We conclude that grant of Kuiper’s application would advance the public interest by authorizing a system designed to increase the availability of high-speed broadband service to consumers, government, and businesses,” the FCC wrote in its authorization for the satellites. Project Kuiper is Amazon’s entrant into the race for space internet, competing with SpaceX’s Starlink constellation, the recently revived U.K.-based OneWeb, and several other players. Amazon asked the FCC for permission to launch its satellites back in July 2019.  The goal is to blanket Earth in satellites in low orbits, which will them beam the internet to ground stations that people can connect to, including from remote locations that might not otherwise have internet access. Amazon’s satellites will orbit between 590 and 630 kilometers, as per the FCC authorization.  In a statement, Amazon said it intended to invest “more than $10 billion” in Project Kuiper. “There are still too many places where broadband access is unreliable or where it doesn’t exist at all,” Dave Limp, Senior Vice President at Amazon, said in the statement. “Kuiper will change that.”  However, there are significant concerns about launching such large numbers of satellites into orbit, such as the risk of collisions between satellites, which could be disastrous.  Currently only about 2,000 active satellites orbit Earth, but SpaceX alone plans to increase this by up to 42,000 with its Starlink constellation, coupled with thousands more from Amazon, OneWeb, and others.  When satellites get too close to each other, they must move out of the way to avoid a potential collision. Currently these maneuvers, known as a collision avoidance maneuver, are performed three times a day. Estimates suggest this will increase to eight an hour if all planned mega constellations are launched.  If two satellites collide, they can produce thousands of pieces of debris that can potentially hit other satellites. In 2009, for example, an active U.S. satellite collided with a defunct Russian satellite, creating a large cloud of dangerous debris.

Tech CEOs Divided Over Whether China Steals U.S. Technology

While Apple's Tim Cook and Google's Sundar Pichai said they were unaware of any issues of China stealing from their respective firms, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg said he believes it is “well-documented” that the Chinese government steals technology from U.S. companies.

Facebook has painted China as a real threat for much of the past couple of years, so this question played right into Zuckerberg’s talking points.

Richard Platt's comments on this:

  • Mr. Zuckerberg coming out correctly about what is going on with the Chinese, about time he and FB were more transparent.
  • Mr. Pichai is actually lying, he does know, the former CEO of Google (Eric Schmidt) is actually on the US government's watchdog group on this issue.  And that is well documented.
  • Mr. Cook, sir, please adjust your point of view on this, and quickly, and quit trying to defend your relationship with Foxconn, they are not the friends that you think you have in them....they are compromised by the PLA and the Chinese government's policy of stealing IP is absolutely going to damage Apple in the long-term, and should face that fact risk sir, it is too much of one given the track record of the Chinese government to take one like this.

The Chromecast’s reset button is proof of the reliability of hardware in a digital world

The Chromecast’s reset button is proof of the reliability of hardware in a digital world | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Google’s Chromecast is an almost entirely software-focused piece of hardware — there’s not even a real remote. But there is one button on the back: a tiny reset button that’s used to bring it back when all other software fixes fail. It’s proof of the reliability of hardware, even in a digital world.
Richard Platts insight:

Google’s Chromecast is the epitome of a software-first device. Nearly all of its capabilities are defined by software, and usually not even software that’s on the Chromecast itself.  But the Chromecast, for all its hands-off simplicity, does have a single hardware button: an emergency reset button on the back. It’s a testament to the importance and reliability of physical inputs over software solutions.

Chinese EV startup Li Auto goes public in the US, raises $1.1 billion | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Five-year-old Chinese startup Li Auto, which makes hybrid SUVs for the China market, went public on July 30th after raising $1.1 billion in an IPO. It’s the second Chinese EV startup to list in the US in the last two years, and it likely won’t be the last — though the Trump administration and other lawmakers have considered making the process harder.
Richard Platts insight:

The latest electric vehicle startup to cash in on a new wave of hype and investment in the space is Li Auto, a five-year-old Chinese company that started trading on the Nasdaq on Thursday after raising $1.1 billion in an initial public offering  With Tesla recently becoming the world’s most valuable automaker, there is suddenly a renewed focus on funding EV startups. Fresh money has been rushing into the likes of Rivian, Nikola, Fisker, Karma, and even suppliers like Velodyne and Hyliion over the last few months from both the public and private sectors.  While most of the ones going public are taking advantage of what’s known as a reverse-merger (where they combine their business with an already publicly traded company that exists solely as a placeholder on the stock exchange, thus eschewing a traditional IPO), Li Auto went the standard route. It filed to go public earlier this year and spent months working with banks and investors. This week, regulators approved Li Auto’s filing, and shares of the company started trading on the Nasdaq exchange.  LI AUTO’S IPO COMES AT A STRANGE AND TENSE TIME:  Li Auto’s IPO comes at a strange and tense time, in that both the Trump administration and a number of lawmakers in the Senate have spent months laying the groundwork to either increase oversight on Chinese companies on US stock exchanges or take them off (or “delist”) them altogether. In addition to the general tensions of Trump’s trade war with the country, there are concerns about transparency with Chinese companies that go public in the US — especially because the watchdog that’s supposed to keep tabs on them, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), has had trouble getting Chinese banks to agree to proper audits.

Richard Platts insight:

When the U.S. administration moved in May to block Huawei Technologies Co. from accessing American technology to manufacture its chips, shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. dropped. Huawei, the Chinese phone and telecoms equipment giant, was one of the custom chipmaker’s biggest clients and losing those orders was thought to pose a huge threat to revenue. Yet that same day, shares of another Taiwanese company jumped as much as their daily 10% limit, the most in almost five years.  MediaTek Inc., a designer of chips used in electronics including smartphones, has since climbed another 78% in Taiwan and by late July overtook the market value of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the Taipei-based flagship of iPhone maker Foxconn Technology Group. At the close of trade Wednesday, MediaTek was Taiwan’s second-biggest company, worth NT$1.2 trillion ($40 billion).  The new rule from the Trump administration stated that chip manufacturers such as TSMC cannot use American know-how to make semiconductors for Huawei, accusing the Chinese company of undertaking “malign activities contrary to U.S. national security and foreign policy interests.” Since U.S. equipment, software and materials are an irreplaceable part of chip manufacturing, the edict meant that Huawei can no longer use its own chips in its devices.  But Huawei’s smartphones, routers, switches and other hardware can use chips designed by outside parties, even if they’re manufactured with American technology.   Enter MediaTek.  It designs 5G chips for both smartphones and base stations, and has them manufactured by TSMC, making it the perfect replacement for the Huawei-designed chips that can no longer be made Already a supplier to the Chinese company, MediaTek’s orders from Huawei are reported to have jumped after the restrictions, spurring analysts to raise their outlook for 2020 revenue by 14% and for next year by 29%.  This wasn’t some fluke, though, or merely being in the right place at the right time. Founded by M.K. Tsai, a U.S.-educated electrical engineer and  early leader of Taiwan’s chip industry, MediaTek has made a career out of being the backup quarterback in the world’s most ubiquitous devices.

Apple Glass may be joined by an audio device that uses both bone and air conduction to transmit sound to the wearer.
Richard Platts insight:

Apple's Apple Glass wearable may be its first device to benefit from a new bone-conducting audio system.  That's the gist of a patent (via Patently Apple) that discusses adding bone conduction tech to a personal audio device to create a unique hybrid system.

We saw the first part of this patent last week, detailing how the bone conduction method would work. But a more explicit mention of "a wearable computing device such as a pair of augmented reality or virtual reality glasses" immediately brings the Apple Glasses to mind.

Richard Platts insight:

With a forecasted 34 percent drop in the memory market this year, Intel is once again expected to rank as the largest semiconductor supplier and have sales that are 26 percent larger than Samsung in 2019, according to market research firm IC Insights.  Intel was the number one ranked semiconductor supplier in 1Q17 but lost its lead spot to Samsung in 2Q17.  It also fell from the top spot in the full-year 2017 ranking, a position it had held since 1993.  With the strong surge in the DRAM and NAND flash markets in 2018, Samsung went from having 7 percent more total semiconductor sales than Intel in 2017 to having 12 percent more semiconductor sales than Intel in 2018.  IC Insights’ November Update to the 2019 McClean Report, released later this month, includes a discussion of the forecasted top-25 semiconductor suppliers in 2019 (the top-15 2019 semiconductor suppliers are covered in this research bulletin).  The Update also includes a detailed five-year forecast of the IC market by product type (including dollar volume, unit shipments, and average selling price) and a forecast of the major semiconductor industry capital spenders for 2019 and 2020.  The expected top-15 worldwide semiconductor (IC and O-S-D—optoelectronic, sensor, and discrete) sales ranking for 2019 is shown in Figure 1.  It includes six suppliers headquartered in the U.S., three in Europe, two each in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan.

Samsung mulls buying stakes in ARM

Samsung mulls buying stakes in ARM  | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it

Richard Platts insight:

Samsung Electronics is set to join the acquisition race for the British semiconductor company Arm, which has been put up for sale by its current owner SoftBank, but the Korean tech giant will try to participate in the bid in the form of equity investment, obtaining a small stake in the chip-designing firm, according to a top official in the semiconductor industry here, Monday.

"Samsung Electronics is considering acquiring a small stake in Arm, which will be between 3 percent and 5 percent," said the top industry official, who requested to remain anonymous. "Arm will be acquired by a consortium led by multiple parties from the semiconductor industry given the complex nature of Arm's shareholding structure."  The official also mentioned that Samsung's move in the acquisition race will be similar to that of acquiring equities in Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML.  In 2012, Samsung acquired a 3-percent stake in ASML Holdings for 766.4 billion won ($642 million). The Korean tech giant decided to become a stakeholder in the Dutch company as it is the world's largest manufacturer of lithography systems, which are used to print circuit patterns on silicon wafers. ASML is also the only supplier for the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology-based lithography equipment, a core product used to produce smaller and more power-efficient chips.  "As seen in Samsung's previous equity purchasing in ASML, Samsung will likely try to acquire equities in Arm. As Samsung could solidify its partnership with ASML after the equity acquisition, Samsung expects it can reduce its licensing fee expenditure by securing equity in Arm," the official added.  Established in 1990, the U.K.-based company Arm is a global leader in mobile chip architecture design that generates profit by licensing its intellectual property to tech giants including Samsung Electronics, Apple and Qualcomm.  Mobile application processor chips are used in most smartphones; Apple's A-series, Samsung's Exynos and Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips are based on Arm's architecture. Every chipmaker using the architecture pays a licensing fee upfront, which depends on the complexity of the design, and the companies additionally pay a royalty for each chip sold.  It was rumored that Samsung or other tech giants such as Apple or Nvidia would attempt to acquire Arm as such a move could help them take the upper hand in the semiconductor market.

But Jim Handy, a U.S.-based seasoned semiconductor analyst working for Objective Analysis, said Arm will be merged by a consortium comprised of fabless companies or intelligent system design companies such as Rambus, Cadence and Synopsys. The rationale for that is because these firms are similar to Arm, generating revenue through IP licensing.

Recently, some suggested that Nvidia, a U.S.-based graphics chip maker, would become the sole suitor for Arm, but the top official said it is unlikely because it will be difficult for the graphics chip maker to win approval from the various fair trade commissions in semiconductor powerhouse regions: the U.S., the EU, and East Asia ― Japan, China and Korea.  The official also expressed doubt whether Nvidia has sufficient financial firepower to become an independent acquirer of Arm given SoftBank reportedly wants to sell Arm based on a valuation of over $41 billion.  "Nvidia won't become the sole suitor for Arm as the company needs to win approvals from fair trade authorities in countries that are doing business with the British company. I think it will be difficult for Nvidia to gain approval from any of those authorities," he said.

TRIZ Designed & Delivered - Samsung’s Airdressor automatic dry cleaning wardrobe removes 99% bacteria now on sale!  | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Richard Platts insight:

For those of you who don't know this Automatic Dry Cleaner from Samsung, the Airdresser, has been a long time project driven as TRIZ conceptual design, and frankly I was wondering if they were ever going to bring it to market, and well here you go.....I do have the slides on the early conceptual development work, for those who are interested. So laundry is a tedious and necessry chore  and folding the clothes takes up a bunch of time too.  As a TRIZ Pracititioner I do have to give credit where it is due, and I do celebrate my colleagues at Samsung for what looks like a true breakthrough in home laundry functionality and performance.   So here is Samsung’s AirDresser to the rescue – an innovative wardrobe designed to steam, deodorize and sanitize clothes without putting them through a washer-dryer cycle.  Traditional laundry machine cycles can potentially damage clothes (how many of us even know the right settings for our loads?) and ever since the pandemic took over our lives we are doing laundry more often to stay safe – this is bound to wear them out 5x faster than usual. The Samsung AirDresser is here to save the day! Its sleek build is similar to a tall, thin fridge and can seamlessly blend in any room. The AirDresser uses a combination of steaming and heat-pump powered drying, and you won’t even have to plumb it in says Samsung. “That’s because, rather than a water connection like a traditional washer would require, the AirDresser relies on a refillable water tank at the bottom of the cabinet. It means it can be installed pretty much anywhere with a regular 120V outlet,” explains the team.  The wardrobe has space for six hanging garments and includes a set of weighted hangers for helping pull the wrinkles out of pants. The AirDresser is safe to use for suits, woolen clothes, knits, down, fur, leather, and denim making it super versatile and functional. Samsung also mentions that it is good to be used to clean babywear (definitely a lot of cycles there!), toys, and even bedding. I think the bedding bit is so important because traditional washer-dryer ties my bedsheet into such knots and we all know ‘entanglements’ aren’t good (right, Smiths?). It also saves water and makes it easier for the elderly to do their laundry!  The Sanitize Cycle program uses high-temperature steam which can remove 99% of common bacteria and dust mites. It also includes a deodorizing filter that takes care of smells (more important if you live in a humid climate) and a heat-pump drying cycle that avoids shrinking. This way the clothes are cleaned more efficiently and avoids the damage when you put them in the usual machines. If you love your clothes to smell anything other than ‘fresh linen’, you can insert a dryer sheet into the Fresh Finish compartment and you can even leave the door open to use the AirDresser as a dehumidifier for the rest of your closet.  Designed to fit in with your smart lifestyle, you can control the AirDresser with Samsung’s app by connecting it with WiFi. The appliance comes with preprogrammed cycles for items like jackets, t-shirts, school uniforms, and sweaters so no thinking is involved there. The app also supports remote control and notifies you when cleaning cycles are finished. Additionally, there’s also something called Samsung SmartThings integration which means you can store presets, get maintenance, water-change alerts, and see energy status. As an alternative to app-control, you can use the touch-sensitive control panel on the front of the door which has buttons for all cycles – Normal, Quick, Delicates, Sanitize, Drying, and Special. Who needs the Narnia wardrobe when you get this one that does your laundry!

SoftBank to maintain stake in ARM after partial sale

Richard Platts insight:

SoftBank Group plans to maintain a stake in U.K. chip designer Arm, which has formed the core of its strategic investments in artificial intelligence, even if it sells a partial interest to Nvidia or through an initial public offering, Nikkei has learned.  SoftBank was already considering an IPO of Arm in the next few years when it was approached by Nvidia last month, according to sources. A sale would not be part of SoftBank's current $41 billion asset monetization program, which it has already made progress by selling shares in U.S. carrier T-Mobile and other companies.  A source familiar with the matter said "there is no change to the IPO plan," but that SoftBank has not ruled out a bilateral deal and is weighing both options.  Intent on holding on to a partial stake, SoftBank is negotiating the terms and schemes with Nvidia, sources said. SoftBank's founder and chairman, Masayoshi Son, has shown confidence about the growth potential of Arm. In SoftBank's annual shareholders meeting in late June, he said "shipments [of semiconductors designed by Arm] are growing exponentially." He has repeatedly explained his plans to list Arm in a few years, signaling that SoftBank would maintain a stake after recouping its investment through an IPO.  An alliance between Arm and Nvidia may create synergies by enhancing development capability. While Arm handles the upstream process of semiconductor design, Nvidia focuses on the downstream process.  Arm currently has a market share of about 5% for chips used in data centers. It may be able to develop new fields in collaboration with Nvidia.

Richard Platts insight:

South Korean giant Samsung, Apple’s contract manufacturing partners Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron, and Indian smartphone vendors Micromax and Lava among others have all applied for India’s $6.6 billion incentive program aimed at boosting the local smartphone manufacturing, New Delhi said on Saturday.  The scheme, called Production-Linked Incentive Scheme, will offer a range of incentives to companies including a 6% financial incentive on additional sales of goods produced locally over five years, with 2019-2020 set as the base year, India’s IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a press conference.

22 companies have applied for the incentive program — that also includes manufacturing of electronics components — and have agreed to export 60% of their locally produced units outside of India, said Prasad. He said the companies estimate they will produce smartphones and components worth $153 billion during the five-year duration.

Richard Platts insight:

Chinese government-linked hackers targeted biotech company Moderna Inc , a U.S.-based coronavirus vaccine research developer, this year in a bid to steal data, according to a U.S. security official tracking Chinese hacking.  China on Friday rejected the accusation that hackers linked to it had targeted Moderna.  Last week, the U.S. Justice Department made public an indictment of two Chinese nationals accused of spying on the United States, including three unnamed U.S.-based targets involved in medical research to fight the novel coronavirus.

The indictment said the Chinese hackers "conducted reconnaissance" against the computer network of a Massachusetts biotech firm known to be working on a coronavirus vaccine in January.  Moderna, which is based in Massachusetts and announced its COVID-19 vaccine candidate in January, confirmed to Reuters that the company had been in contact with the FBI and was made aware of the suspected "information reconnaissance activities" by the hacking group mentioned in last week's indictment.  Reconnaissance activities can include a range of actions, including probing public websites for vulnerabilities to scouting out important accounts after entering a network, cybersecurity experts say.  “Moderna remains highly vigilant to potential cybersecurity threats, maintaining an internal team, external support services and good working relationships with outside authorities to continuously assess threats and protect our valuable information,” said company spokesman Ray Jordan, declining to provide further detail.  The U.S. security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not provide further details. The FBI and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declined to disclose the identities of companies targeted by Chinese hackers.  Moderna's vaccine candidate is one of the earliest and biggest bets by the Trump administration to fight the pandemic.  The federal government is supporting development of the company's vaccine with nearly half a billion dollars and helping Moderna launch a clinical trial of up to 30,000 people beginning this month.

Intel introduces Cooper Lake processor, other additions to portfolio | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Chip giant has introduced its 3rd gen Xeon Scalable processors and also announced the Optane persistent memory 200 series, new 3D NAND SSDs, and disclosed its upcoming Stratix 10 NX FPGAs.
Richard Platts insight:

Codenamed Cooper Lake, Intel said the processor is designed for deep learning, virtual machine density, in-memory database, mission-critical applications, and analytics-intensive workloads.

The 3rd generation Xeon Scalable processors, touting the new wave as enabling the acceleration of artificial intelligence (AI) development.  Speaking with media, Lisa Spelman, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of the company's Xeon and memory group, said customers can expect an average estimated gain of almost double on "popular workloads" over double on VMs, albeit when it is compared with 5-year-old equivalents.  "We have 35 million Xeon scalables deployed and we really see this as the foundation of the world's data centric infrastructure," Spelman said.  Spelman said Cooper Lake has received a deep learning "boost", thanks to x86 support of Brain floating point 16-bit (blfoat16) numeric format and Vector Neural Network Instructions (VNNI), which she said brings enhanced artificial intelligence inference and training performance, with close to double the performance for AI training and inference on image classification workloads when compared to the prior generation. "Intel Deep Learning Boost with bfloat16 delivers 1.7x more AI training performance for natural language processing vs. the prior generation," the company added in a spec sheet.  According to Spelman, the latest offering is the "foundation for AI" and it's the only mainstream data centre CPU on the market with integrated deep learning acceleration."We believe most of our customers do begin their journey on AI on Xeon," she said.  "The 3rd generation of Intel's Xeon scalables evolves our 4 and 8 socket processor offering, it delivers built in AI acceleration with our next generation of Intel DL boost, which is enhanced with blfloat16 and it delivers that persistent memory leadership with the new Intel Octane persistent memory 200 series," Spelman continued.

"We have also enhanced the speed select technology, which was new in the 2nd generation -- this provides users control over the base and turbo frequencies of specific cores and gives the options for a customer to maximise the performance of a certain application or a higher priority workload so they can guarantee a quality of service while still utilising the remaining computing capability and assets that are available for other workloads."

Intel said Cooper Lake delivers multi-socket core count density with up to 28 cores per processor and up to 224 cores per platform in an 8-socket configuration, which it touted as driving enhanced performance, throughput, and CPU frequencies
