Factfulness (the book)

Factfulness (the book) | Project Apollo - PHE | Scoop.it
When asked simple questions about global trends―what percentage of the world’s population live in poverty; why the world’s population is increasing; how many girls finish school―we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of only carrying opinions for which you have strong supporting facts.

Hans Rosling's final book will challenge your assumptions and (hopefully) shatter your misconceptions.  The result will be a clear picture of our world, past and present.

So many reasons to be a serial optimist!

Eric Heckler: The Individual Evidence Pyramid

Eric Heckler: The Individual Evidence Pyramid | Project Apollo - PHE | Scoop.it

At the bottom of this pyramid are “anecdotal” evidence and individual “case studies.” Implicit to this model is that, while there is a lot of information and a lot of “case studies,” from an evidence-based medicine standpoint, this sort of information is highly suspect until the evidence can be translated and “moved up” the pyramid. At the top of this pyramid is the “gold standard” approach of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The idea here is that, if an effect remains true across multiple RCTs, then the effect is likely to be “true,” across individuals and, thus, can be used to support decision-making for individuals as a primary source of external evidence. Strengths of this approach are that it provides a “warm start” for decision-making when little information is available about any given individual. Because there is a rich history of conducting RCTs there is good reason for this to be a “gold standard” for “external evidence.”

VIDEO: Future Patient/Future Doctor - Larry Smarr, PhD & Michael Kurisu, DO - UCTV - University of California Television | Project Apollo - PHE | Scoop.it
Computer scientist Larry Smarr and osteopathic physician Michael Kurisu present a vision for healthcare that combines the best of allopathic and osteopathic medicine by using a more personalized, hands-on, systems-based approach to treating patients. They demonstrate this proof of concept with details on how Smarr diagnosed his own Crohn's disease by using blood and stool tests to track changes in his body. And when the symptoms became too severe, Smarr collaborated with his surgeon, Sonia Ramamoorthy, MD, to plan the operation based on 3D images of his organs created at his research institute, Calit2 at UC San Diego. Kurisu then introduces Project Apollo, a group of patients inspired by Smarr who are collecting their own data to develop personalized treatments for their particular conditions.

Come for a new hip, stay for the beach? San Diego bets on medical touism | Project Apollo - PHE | Scoop.it
SAN DIEGO — It’s got sun, sand, top-flight biomedical research, and highly rated hospitals. But can San Diego really become a hub for medical tourism?

City leaders sure hope so. They recently launched a marketing initiative — funded mostly by a local philanthropist — that aims to attract patients from across  the country and around the world. The pitch: Get your hip replaced or your cancer treated by top specialists — and then take your family to Legoland or SeaWorld.
