Jyothi Pappu’s journey of curating healthy recipes with sustainable business

Rapid urbanization is making people turn towards instant foods to match their fast lifestyle. However most foods available in the market are processed with harmful preservatives. Jyothi took this as a challenge to reintroduce lost healthy recipes as far as the porridge. Yes, “The Porridge”, first prepared food of mankind and we have successfully organized “first ever porridge tasting party in India” last December 2021.

Jyothi recollects “I started preparing traditional baby foods for my baby boy in the year 2012 as I wanted to keep him away from all the packaged food stuff. He was really lucky to have all the handcrafted foods by my mom & grand mom. I gifted the same to my friends kids with which they completely fell in love. But it was not an idea to market these until one of my friends suggested to. It was my husband Satish K P (Works as CE at ONGC) who really trusted my idea of handcrafting foods and marketing with traditional recipes with the name “Nutreat” and funded me.  In 2016 December our local super chain market gave us a chance to shelf our products and received a complete different response. People from a village liked it but felt very expensive” She recalls.

However we had a decent business from this super market chain and got offer from local baby shop too. Everything was smooth but the business was upside down when we wanted to introduce the same in the nearby cities. That was a time where everyone used import their baby foods from UK, US and Australia and even the market loaded up with same. People are really not ready to use local Indian foods. It took nearly 1 year to get a decent customer base and by the year 2017 our customers were upper middle class and highly influential. Every thing was word of mouth they loved the concept of stone grinding and experienced it live.

Pandemic - The Game Changer

In the year 2020 when the whole world was in lock down we worked hard and sent the parcels with high risk as many babies were dependent on our foods and even the pregnant women. We got permission from our district collector and shipped all the parcels pan India with out any delay during the first lock down.

At same time in collaboration with an NGO -Smart Village Movement we took the step of employing more rural women who lost their jobs due to pandemic. However convincing rural women to work with stone grinders was not that easy, we had to offer them double the price. While even convincing new customers during pandemic also gave us a challenge. They were quite afraid of the safety till we made our services live. Yes we handcrafted Nutreat live, we made them watch their order live on Insta, FB and even personal WhatsApp calls.

Customers were really impressed and even our order rate raised at once with our unique approach. Now we have 120+ rural women (20 optional) associated with us who really handcraft the foods for babies, women, everyday care and seasonal jams, cookies etc. Everything is done on pre-order basis and no single tin is stored. It’s fresh, real and healthy” She says.

Inspired by traditions

While the industry is buzzing with several baby and health foods, Nutreat works completely in reverse direction. All the recipes were inspired by lost traditional recipes of India and other countries which were slightly modified for this generation.

Jyothi says “I grew up listening to stories on India, its culture, mythology and heritage this made me fell in love with it. So travelling the journey of restoring traditional food habits of India. Every recipe has its own story and uniqueness. I love digging into our traditional recipes and talking a lot with elders whenever possible. My best friend Swetha N joined me in this journey as Managing Director during pandemic who shares her part in designing recipes sometimes.

We customize foods according to customers choice which is our USP and all recipes are seasonal and crafted with 100% local ingredients procured from small farmers who grow naturally. Till now we have teamed up with 11 farmers all over India.

The Porridge story

While handcrafting baby and other health foods I wanted to re-introduce mankind’s first prepared food porridge and educate the people about its health benefits over any other beverages.

In this we have organised India’s first ever Porridge Tasting Party where we served 6 instant porridges for about 20 members who are foodies, health lovers, Doctors etc. This was a grand success and took Nutreat to next level where many Franchisee enquires happened and now we are ready to open 2 Franchise outlets in Bangalore and Hyderabad in the month of February.

Jyothi beats many copycats with her unique recipe strategy and customizing Nutreat according to customers' choice. They have almost 130+ handcrafted foods for all age groups starting from the 6th month and customized around 7000+ recipes. Of all Protein rich porridge, Nutri 28, Ragi Almond are hot cakes while seasonal jams would never been kept behind.

Jyothi claims the company increased its revenue more than four times in 2021, and the target is to double it this year.

Epilepsy is a disorder related to the central nervous system which leads to abnormalities in the activities performed by the brain. It further leads to seizures or occasions when an individual suffers from unusual sensations and loss of awareness. Both males and females, of any age or ethnic background, remain at the risk of suffering from epilepsy.

Epilepsy is also referred to as a seizure disorder by many. If an individual suffers from two unprovoked seizures, they will be said to be diagnosed with epilepsy. By ‘unprovoked’, we mean that the seizures would not be caused by a general medical condition like low blood sugar or alcohol withdrawal. Content is key to deep engagement

The ecosystem of content creation has seen a drastic change in terms of audience interaction since the onset of the digital marketing boom. Content has long been looked upon as the product of the advertising process and not a part of it. Traditional advertising accounts for creation, production, distribution and the measurement of the effectiveness of the content but they overlook what stands in the heart of this gigantic process- content itself. International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)South Asia Regional Centre, Varanasi collaborated with Chhattisgarh Agricon Samiti, to perform direct on-ground trials with farmers of 2 districts of Chhattisgarh, Raipur & Durg. Varieties developed by scientists and state agriculture universities were put on trial directly into farmer’s fields. Through this practical approach not only variety’s performance in the field was observed but also feedback from farmers group and their observation was given consideration.

Starting of Trials: Trials started in July 2021. These trials were conducted in 2 different modes: On-farm trials (OFT)and Varietal Cafeteria (VC). In OFT 7 paddy varieties provided by IRRI and a local popular variety of the area was distributed to farmers by team members of Chhattisgarh Agricon Samiti. These varieties were cultivated in farmers land, using farmer's regular package of practices. Demonstration of VC was done with one farmer in Raipur in which 30 on-trial varieties were demonstrated. In varietal cafeteria farmers and other stakeholders like agriculture department, scientists, interact, learn, evaluate, and decide on their favourite varieties.

“Farmers training cum evaluation” was organised at the varietal cafeteria and other OFT sites. Field visit and feedback session was conducted during October 2021 in the presence of scientists of IRRI(Varanasi) Dr. Kuntal Das, Dr. Sarvesh Shukla, and Dr. Sanket Thakur of Chhattisgarh Agricon Samiti. Farmers shared their feedback and problems related to the varieties with the scientists.

In the varietal cafeteria, an evaluation training and feedback workshop was conducted before harvesting of the crop. 50 farmers participated in the event along with Mr. Gayaraam joint director agriculture, Raipur, dr. Sanket Thakur (agriculture scientists) Mr. Gajendra Chandrakar agricultural scientist from Indira Gandhi Agriculture University, Mr. R.K Kashyap Deputy Director Agriculture. The evaluation process involved aspects like the height of the crop, number of panicles, number of grains per panicle, and other agronomical observations along with ease of cultivation.

The workshop encouraged farmers to identify preferred characteristics in the paddy plant. Evidence-based trial and evaluation improved awareness about various new and improved varieties among farmers.

Quality Seed Production and inclusion of women

This trial of paddy varieties was formulated with an approach of “providing seeds to producing seeds”. After harvesting and evaluation by farmers, a farmer’s favourite variety was selected for seed production. The training was conducted on “Quality Seed Production of Rice” by Chhattisgarh Agricon Samiti.45-50 women participated in this training and learnt to produce quality seeds. These seeds will be used for OFT in Rabi season. These trials are now being carried out for rabi season with 45 farmers of Raipur and Durg.

Positive Outcomes:

Farmers were supported and motivated in the adaption of emerging and improved varieties of paddy along with aspiring them for quality seed production.

IRRI received performance analysis, farmers' acceptance, and behavioural analysis from the trial which will support them for further research.

The high rank achieved in Swachh Survekshan Survey 2021, is a miraculous victory as in 2018 the city was at 324th position and at the 4th position now. 

This has been a result of months of organised and structured efforts by the HCL foundation. On-ground campaigns and door-to-door awareness surveys were conducted to drive behavioural change in citizens. Cleanliness staff was trained regularly on how to segregate waste and best practices to manage solid waste. HCLF not only trained the staff and residents through campaigns, it also distributed litter bins, collection carts and was involved in city beautification activities through wall art and graffiti. 

"The Clean Noida Project works with over 90 RWAs across the city. The residents of these sectors are grateful for the initiatives and knowledge imparted by the foundation. It takes years to drive a behavioral change. Clean Noida has been working rigorously since 2018 to ensure Noida emerges as a clean city. Our aim is to look at development, hygiene and ensure people live in peace and harmony," said Mr Laxmi Narayin, President, RWA, Sector 19. 

The city has also received a 5-star garbage-free city rating, a higher achievement from having received a 3-star garbage-free city rating in 2020. HCL Foundation has adopted 8 Urban Villages as part of their Model Villages initiatives. The workers have worked relentlessly to ensure these areas are converted into model villages. Door to door waste collection, street sweeping and drain cleaning, sensitizing villagers on solid waste management practices and eliminated all 55 Garbage Vulnerable Points. 

Under the Chakachak Village Initiative, the foundation worked towards collecting waste from 62 Urban Villages, distributed bags and dustbins, sensitized residents and cleanliness workers and about 300 walls were painted with slogans and for beautification. The village homes have their own composting pits and the villagers are being trained to manage their waste efficiently, converting the areas into zero waste villages. 

An elated UV resident, Jeetu at one of the awareness events said, "We are very happy to see the hygiene and cleanliness levels in the village today. Years of door-to-door collections and training of the waste collection staff has enabled this change. The team HCLF has been prompt with support and guidance. The Clean Noida Project team is a bunch of dynamic people who recognize the problem and strive for a solution." 

There have been celebratory events in marketplaces, villages and RWAs to keep the awareness going. Cleanliness is equal to Godliness - the adage comes alive as you see the Clean Noida team in action. One can only hope the whole country takes an inspiration from their exemplary work.

As the pandemic spreads its tentacles again, this time with the new variant Omicron, the situation has turned worrisome for the poor once again, especially those whose livelihood is at stake.

For such people, NGOs and social workers are no less than angels in human disguise. In the past two years, the selfless workers have provided succour to the needy by supplying free food and essential items on a daily basis.

One of the many food camps or Langar Sewa activities being carried out throughout the country by good Samaritans, in view of the growing uncertainty during pandemic, is an initiative run by Pushppal Singh Bhatia and his wife Ravneet Kaur, in Jalandhar for underprivileged kids. The duo, who are famous for their digital content on social media with their handle "That Couple Though", run the food camp for underprivileged children every Saturday-Sunday at Kapurthala Road in Jalandhar. At this camp, 400-500 children belonging to poorest of poor families are fed meals, supplied with warm clothes and blankets, and kept safe during the harsh cold.

Pushppal and Ravneet, both parents themselves, realise the value of a nutritious meal for the children's development. Their initiative is a means to address the grave issue of malnutrition among underprivileged children. Fortifying this further, Pushppal Singh remarked, "We as a couple have always been connected to our roots and we wanted to help bring a change in the society.

The Langar Sewa is also an integral part of the Sikh community which was started by our first Guru, following his footsteps I feel that it is our duty to give back to the community in every possible way"

His wife, Ravneet, further elaborates, "Me being a parent myself can understand the hardships that these children have to face on a day to day basis. I am happy that with this initiative we have managed to bring a small positive change in their lives."

About “Mag Drive System”

The “Mag Drive System” is a new technology that combines drive assist and power generation functions that utilize the characteristics of magnets. It is possible to generate electricity without magnetoresistance by using the rotation of the pedal while riding, and to supply power to the motor while charging the power storage device via the board. It can also be used in combination with regenerative braking, which is a conventional power generation technology for electric mobility. With this invention, it is possible to generate electricity not only during deceleration but also during acceleration, which significantly improves energy efficiency as compared to existing electric mobility.

About “Smart E-bike”

The “Smart E-bike” is a self-standing power-assisted bicycle that does not require external charging and is equipped with an autonomous unmanned driving function and the “Mag Drive System”. It generates electricity by using the rotation of the pedal while riding without magnetic resistance, and can supply power to the electric assist while also charging the battery. It is implemented with five stages of electric assist, and if you are riding inside the city in eco-mode the electric assist will continue semi-permanently without the need for external charging. In power-mode, a maximum of 250W of electric assist can be activated. With the exponential improvement of its power generating capacity, the battery has a capacity of 2.2Ah and its weight has been reduced to up to 1kg. The total weight, including the battery, is about 18 kg, and even if the battery is empty, you can just charge the battery while riding it as if it were a normal bicycle. It also functions as an emergency supply and storage of power in the event of a power outage.

With the launch of the “Mag Drive System” and the “Smart E-bike”, Hello Space will exponentially improve the energy efficiency of electric mobility and thereby contribute to the realization of SDGs, carbon neutrality and sustainability. Kiyoe Yoshioka, who is the vocalist of Ikimonogakari, is going to be singing the opening theme song for the TV animation series, “A Couple of Cuckoos,” airing on TV Asahi from April in 2022. This will also be her first ever solo act.

“A Couple of Cuckoos” is a manga series telling a love story which started from the incident that babies switched at birth, written, and illustrated by Miki Yoshikawa, who also created “Flunk Punk Rumble,” and “Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches”.

The first volume of this manga series was published on the 15th of May 2020 by Kodansha and was quickly sold out in every book shop. This is an extremely popular manga series which compelled Kodansha to produce 10 editions in the shortest amount of time in their history.

It has been announced that the manga is going to be adapted into a TV animation airing from April 2022, and the opening theme song will be Kiyoe Yoshioka’s ‘Dekoboko’. This new song ‘Dekoboko’ is created by Haruko Nagaya from the band Ryokuoushoku Shakai. Haruko Nagaya is very close to Kiyoe Yoshioka both as friends and also in business as they are often on TV programs together. This song has an authentic pop sound with a very charming feeling. It blends with the world of the anime “A Couple of Cuckoos” to show many different exciting feelings. The song ‘Dekoboko’ will be available for streaming and download on various music platforms from Sunday the 17th of April 2022.

The artwork was done by Mr.HARU (koe Inc.) who also worked on Kiyoe’s last single ‘Massara’. He creates a pop feeling as if he took the color and brightness from the song itself. Kiyoe Yoshioka

Kiyoe Yoshioka was born on the 29th of February in 1984. She is the vocalist of a J-Pop unit called Ikimonogakari. Kiyoe became the vocalist after she spontaneously joined the duo unit performing live on the street. The unit Ikimonogakari, which consisted of Yoshiki Misuno and Hotaka Yamashita at that time, was performing on the 3rd of November 1999. They gradually got attention due to their continuous efforts in their local cities Atsugi and Ebina, and they made their major debut with the single ‘SAKURA’ in March 2006. Since then, they have made many hit songs including ‘arigato’, ‘YELL’, ‘Bluebird’and ‘Kaze ga fuiteiru’. In January 2017 they made the announcement as a “Grazing announcement”, and they stopped their activities as a group temporarily.
