New Report by BlackRock: Sustainability: The future of investing

New Report by BlackRock: Sustainability: The future of investing | Inclusive Business around the World | Scoop.it

For years, many investors saw sustainable investing as a trade-off.

They viewed it as a sacrifice of value for “values.” And to be fair, they were often right. But that is no longer the case. What has changed? More granular data, more sophisticated analysis, and deeper societal appreciation for and understanding of what sustainability means for people, companies and countries. There is increasing awareness that material sustainability-related factors — often characterized as environmental, social and governance, or ESG — can be tied to a company’s long-term growth potential. This makes sustainable investing something investors can no longer afford to ignore.

Singapore: Creating a Vibrant Social Innovation Ecosystem

Singapore: Creating a Vibrant Social Innovation Ecosystem | Inclusive Business around the World | Scoop.it

While Singapore’s government and universities are committed to building a vibrant ecosystem for social entrepreneurship and social innovation in Singapore, more work can be done for the social good, and we suggest three issues for consideration.

First, Singapore can retain more local talents if it increases its support for its entrepreneurs by providing them with a domestic market that allows them to scale at home and abroad so that the country can benefit from all the good our entrepreneurs are doing.

Second, educational institutions need a viable way to better balance the pressure of global rankings and their responsibilities of tackling major social challenges. Inundated with output pressures, universities can be slow in identifying the social needs of surrounding communities and delay taking an active role in the ecosystem for impact.

Third, Singapore can continue to be a leading force in social innovation only if it continuously analyzes and evaluates its strengths and weaknesses. In doing so, Singapore can accomplish great things with fellow ASEAN member states. For instance, cross-sector collaboration between Singapore and China could explore how the Belt and Road Initiative could encourage international trade, improve regional infrastructure, and be a boon to the employment sector. Being mindful of these priorities is essential for Singapore to further advance its role as a leading smart sustainable city in the world.

Using Innovative Finance to Scale Up Corporate Base-of-Pyramid Initiatives

Using Innovative Finance to Scale Up Corporate Base-of-Pyramid Initiatives | Inclusive Business around the World | Scoop.it

Past BOP initiatives have revealed that it is rarely easy to make a significant impact and meet corporate financial goals. So, there is little doubt that the go-solo BOP approach needs redefining: Achieving sustainable impact at scale requires extending beyond the mindset of standalone corporate initiatives.

While leaders in the inclusive business space have long been aware of the importance of cross-sector partnerships, the challenge has been figuring out the right structures for these partnerships to realise their potential. Fortunately, this appears easier with the application of the emerging tool of innovative finance to enable promising business models that might not otherwise be scalable. While the jury is still out on how well it will work out, the early signs are promising. We will all be watching eagerly to find out how this space unfolds, as innovative finance could become an important tool to extend the potential of employing business as a force for good.

Rwanda: Motorbike Transport App Creates Jobs And Saves Lives

Rwanda: Motorbike Transport App Creates Jobs And Saves Lives | Inclusive Business around the World | Scoop.it

With the lack of established infrastructure, Africa is in the rare position of being able to adopt new technologies without needing to spend money overhauling an existing system. In the world of tech, this has allowed the continent to leapfrog into the 21st century. A Rwanda-based motorcycle taxi company, SafeMotos, has taken the app-based transport service idea, made famous by Uber, a step further by ensuring its product is based on the local needs of both passengers and drivers. SafeMotos is an attempt to bring safety and economic security to a city of over 1 million residents who find the quick and inexpensive (but not always safe) motorcycle taxis their best option to get around.

Philippines: BOI Inclusive Business Tax Incentives are working

Philippines: BOI Inclusive Business Tax Incentives are working   | Inclusive Business around the World | Scoop.it

The BOI has included "Inclusive Business" as one of the priority activities in the current Investment Priorities Plan.

In 2018, the first full year of implementation of the IB policy, the agency approved five IB models, including the Lapu-Lapu City hotel project.

These five projects in agriculture- and tourism-based industries collectively target to source Ph2.99 billion worth of goods and services from MSEs by the third year of their commercial operations, and directly hire at least 185 and engage over 1,000 individuals, at least 30% of which are women, from the marginalized sectors.

“The almost Php3 billion worth of goods and services being sourced from MSEs translate to decent jobs and livelihoods in the areas where these projects operate and to think that these are coming from only five projects. Just think of the impact that ten or a hundred projects will create in the countryside if we can get more companies to engage in IB,” Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said in a statement.
