What’s Next in Computing?

What’s Next in Computing? | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it

The computing industry progresses in two mostly independent cycles: financial and product cycles. There has been a lot of handwringing lately about where we are in the financial cycle. Financial markets get a lot of attention. They tend to fluctuate unpredictably and sometimes wildly. The product cycle by comparison gets relatively little attention, even though it is what actually drives the computing industry forward. We can try to understand and predict the product cycle by studying the past and extrapolating into the future.

5 team-building activities to evoke extreme enthusiasm

5 team-building activities to evoke extreme enthusiasm | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it

Team-building activities have gotten a bad rep in recent years. Even the mention of the term can quickly result in snarky comments or at least eye-rolling from employees. And honestly, who can blame them—team-building activities are often dull, awkward and, in the end, useless.

(Empathic Leadership) 3 Ways Increasing Your Empathy Makes You More Effective Leader

(Empathic Leadership) 3 Ways Increasing Your Empathy Makes You More Effective Leader | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it
So, yes, empathy plays a big role in leaders creating a thriving environment where employees can do their best work, thus increasing retention, productivity, talent attraction and collaboration. And all of those "feel good" traits can lead to better market performance and profitability. Here are three ways for leaders to cultivate more empathy:

1. Practice presence.
If you feel constantly scattered and preoccupied, you’ll have no capacity to consider others’ perspectives or think clearly. You’ll be in defensive and reactive mode constantly, which is the antithesis of empathy. You’ll be too caught up in your own stuff!

Focus on the group and each person in it. Walk the talk. Be trustworthy.

Think on the margins of your comfort zone. Thinking outside the box is a hackneyed, tired slogan. We need to have some comfort, although it may be streteched.

7 tips to declutter your work life | The Enterprisers Project

7 tips to declutter your work life | The Enterprisers Project | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it
Getting back into the swing of work after a long holiday break can overwhelm you. Day-to-day stressors – like constant meetings, interruptions by colleagues, and email notifications – pick up right where they left off. Add in goal setting and planning for the year, and suddenly that in-over-your-head feeling comes back with a vengeance.

If you are already feeling this way, halfway into January, perhaps it’s time to make a few changes. Could decluttering your work life make you more productive and happy in 2019? Considering the fact that millions of people have bought into Marie Kondo's organization method, as described in her book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” and in her popular new Netfilx series, it's an idea worth exploring.

We asked IT and business leaders for their “life-changing” hacks for filtering out the distractions and focusing on their most important work. Read on for their tips, and consider if any of these ideas can help spark more joy in your work day.

What Would It Be Like to Ride Through a Wormhole?

What Would It Be Like to Ride Through a Wormhole? | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it

In "Contact," Jodie Foster travels through one. So does Matthew McConaughey in "Interstellar," Spock in the 2009 "Star Trek" film, and pretty much everybody in "Stargate." Wormholes are ridiculously popular in science fiction, but are they science fact? No one actually knows. There are powerful theories that predict them, but if they do exist, many scientific hurdles stand in the way to riding the wormhole express. That doesn't mean we can't imagine what it might be like!

(Empathic Leadership) How Empathetic Leadership Can Transform Your Business

(Empathic Leadership) How Empathetic Leadership Can Transform Your Business | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it

The old paradigm of leadership is struggling to adapt to the evolving demands of today. In the first part of this series, we discussed why the world needs a new leadership culture.

Aside from the macro concerns such as political instability and misallocation of global resources, there are immediate negatives to your business when operating from the old model. Lack of engagement, less productivity, ethical issues, less innovation and talent drain are a few problems caused by traditional leadership.

Let us then begin to construct a new paradigm – one which takes into account emerging trends, new research into our biology and a better understanding of the drawbacks of the traditional style.

The need for empathetic leaders

Chelsea Boyd's curator insight, March 14, 4:42 PM
How well we lead a team is determined on our self-awareness, the best leaders and the ones who I look up too have always been confident, self-assured people. I think this article started with a great point, to know where you are at or need improvements, you need to know where your leadership level is. I am not sure how I feel about using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator test to determine this. I have personally taken this test several times and have received a few different results. Something I would like to do is test and strengthen my willpower.

The article suggests doing something that a lot of people need in order to be truly successful in their career: Identify your role models or even better, have a mentor. Role models help to motivate and set goals for your leadership skills. They can help you in believing in yourself to always strive to be and do better.

Being a good leader all starts with us (not the team, not the project and not your boss), if we have good habits and can recognize our bad ones, that seems to be a skill in itself. Being able to choose good habits to pick up and bad habits to drop takes discipline. This can be done with monthly action planning, targeting specific habit goals.

Music captivates listeners and synchronizes their brainwaves

Music captivates listeners and synchronizes their brainwaves | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it
Music has the ability to captivate us; when listeners engage with music, they follow its sounds closely, connecting to what they hear in an affective and invested way. But what is it about music that keeps the audience engaged? A study by researchers from The City College of New York and the University of Arkansas charts new ground in understanding the neural responses to music.

Are You A Creative Or Reactive Leader? It Matters

Are You A Creative Or Reactive Leader? It Matters | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it
What is it, exactly, that enables a person to be an effective leader? And what behaviors, well-intended or not, get in the way?

These are questions that many leaders and wannabe leaders should be asking themselves.

Robert J. Anderson and William A. Adams have some compelling answers. And the answers didn’t come from some self-proclaimed leadership guru ensconced at a secret mountaintop retreat.

Anderson and Adams draw their data from more than one million leaders (that’s not a typo—one million) they’ve surveyed worldwide. They asked respondents to provide written comments on effective leaders they’ve observed—the ones who get results, grow the business, enhance the culture, and nurture subsequent waves of effective leaders.
