What's Your Leadership Promise?

What's Your Leadership Promise? | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it

I learned a long time ago, first in parenting and then in leadership, to use the “P” word sparingly and only if I knew I could truly fulfill the commitment. Anyone who is a parent has probably encountered a time where you made a somewhat casual or flippant “promise”—“Sure, Johnny, I promise we’ll go to the beach next weekend”—only for it to not happen. What is the first thing the child says when you don’t deliver? “But you promised!”

Eight Reasons Why Awe Makes Your Life Better

Eight Reasons Why Awe Makes Your Life Better | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it
Starting 15 years ago, scientists have been studying the complex and mysterious emotion called awe—one you might have felt if you’ve stood in front of the Taj Mahal, hiked among towering redwoods, or had your mind blown at a concert, play, or ballet.

Inducing goosebumps and dropped jaws, awe experiences are remarkable in their own right. Moreover, a growing body of research suggests that experiencing awe may lead to a wide range of benefits, from happiness and health to perhaps more unexpected benefits such as generosity, humility, and critical thinking.

In our busy lives, seeking awe may be low on our list of priorities. But we might be underestimating its power. “One simple prescription can have transformative effects: Look for more daily experiences of awe,” writes the GGSC’s Dacher Keltner.

The latest research suggests that taking the time to experience awe—whether through engaging with nature, enjoying great art or music, or even bingeing on breathtaking YouTube videos—may be a pathway to improving your life and relationships.

Generation Z characteristics and its implications for companies

Generation Z characteristics and its implications for companies | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it
Our study based on the survey reveals four core Gen Z behaviors, all anchored in one element: this generation’s search for truth. Gen Zers value individual expression and avoid labels. They mobilize themselves for a variety of causes. They believe profoundly in the efficacy of dialogue to solve conflicts and improve the world. Finally, they make decisions and relate to institutions in a highly analytical and pragmatic way. That is why, for us, Gen Z is “True Gen.” In contrast, the previous generation—the millennials, sometimes called the “me generation”—got its start in an era of economic prosperity and focuses on the self. Its members are more idealistic, more confrontational, and less willing to accept diverse points of view.

I generally don't like, Generation A, B, C labels, because each generation is made up of so many types that writing about them as if they were homogeneous tends to over-simplify things. But this piece of work by McKinsey is at least based on a survey, and contains some interesting 'insights' on people born between 1995 - 2010. What is certain is that their attitides will have an indelible impact on the next 50 years.

Compassion can be seen as a four-step process: awareness, connection, empathy, and action.

The element of action is what takes compassion beyond feelings of empathy or concern.

Self-compassion is the starting point for compassionate leadership.

Research shows that there is no tension between compassionate leadership and results.

4 Tech Tools and Tips to Improve Your Writing | WIRED | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it
IT DOESN’T MATTER whether you’re drafting a company-wide memo, struggling through a school assignment, or working on your first novel. Writing is never effortless. It takes work. If you’re here, you already know this. Luckily, there are a few hacks to improve the writing (or post-writing) process.

I have spent much of the past decade as a freelance writer. In doing so, I’ve had to come up with tricks and ways to use technology to assist me along the way. This includes things like learning how to better edit myself to finding who has shared my published work later on. Writing may not be easy, but it doesn’t need to be impossible either.

LESSONS I'VE LEARNED THE HARD WAY

you do know what to do
don't try to do it all yourself
delegate
ask for help, it makes others feel valued
trust your gut
you have a beautiful smile
don't forget to say no once in awhile
take 15 minutes every day to prioritize what you will do -- put that time in your schedule
have people bring you solutions, not problems
separate the merely urgent from the truly important
avoid people with negative energy
the best feedback you can give is specific
you don't have to get an "A" on every paper
be willing to admit it when you don't know the answer, ask others what they think
make some quiet time for yourself and put it in your schedule
notice and celebrate even small successes
the best way to motivate your people is to tell them when they do a good job and why
BREATHE
LAUGH
one of my best bosses had a sign on his desk that said, "Deadlines amuse me"
Love is the answer

Discovering the Right Approach for Leading in this Era

Discovering the Right Approach for Leading in this Era | Technology and Leadership Ignite | Scoop.it
The right approach for leading in this era might just be a blended, adaptive approach drawing upon three different styles of leadership.

Via Don Dea
Don Dea's curator insight, June 10, 5:32 AM

Three Styles of Leading

1. The Wartime Leader

The wartime leader in our organizations is driven by the need to fend off existential threats.

This leader generates a laser focus on the mission and draws upon the Commander’s Intent to provide clarity and acting parameters.

2. The Resilient Leader

The resilient leader focuses on a longer time horizon than the wartime leader and is continually working to see around corners and identify emerging opportunities and threats.

This leader inspires individuals to think differently and experiment to find “next” for the business.

3. The Servant Leader

The servant-leader is all about vanquishing fear and reducing the organizational friction that gets in the way of people doing their jobs. The focus is on eliminating bureaucratic bottlenecks and streamlining decision-making in pursuit of a better future.

The servant leader’s hallmark is empathy focused on meeting people where they are at and offering them the support of a healthy working environment where they are motivated to chase their potential.

The Bottom-Line for Now

We’re playing tridimensional chess where pieces move horizontally and vertically on multiple levels in our world today. The leader who brings the emotional intelligence and mental acuity to adjust and adapt their style on-the-fly based on the needs of the people and organization is one we desperately need. Unfortunately, there is no Philosopher’s Stone for developing leaders or turning crises into prosperity. This is going to be hard.
