The book G Protein Coupled Receptor Screening Assays: Methods and Protocols, edited by BERG-IBB researchers Sofia Martins and Miguel Prazeres, has just been published. The book reaches out to everyone involved in the discovery of GPCR-active drugs, and provides a transversal overview of the different levels of GPCR signaling addressable in the different screening strategies and presents practical examples of how current assay technologies are contributing to new paradigms in GPCR drug research. "The fifth edition of the Winter School in Systems Biology will be organized at IST, from the 5th to the 9th of January 2015, within the scope of the ERASMUS MUNDUS EuSysBio Master programme in Systems Biology. This programme is offered by a consortium that includes IST and two other universities of the CLUSTER: KTH in Stockholm, Sweden, and Aalto University in Finland. Several sessions of this Winter School are open to the public. These conferences will focus on various approaches and scientific fields that contribute to Systems Biology, applied to diverse biological systems, from microorganisms of biotechnological and clinical interest to cancer cells, namely, Systems Metabolic Engineering, Functional Genomics and Glicomics, Comparative Genomics and Phylogeny."

Post-doctoral Researcher Nuno Lourenço Joins Hovione

Post-doctoral Researcher Nuno Lourenço Joins Hovione | iBB | Scoop.it

After six years as a post-doctoral researcher at BERG-iBB, Nuno Miguel Torres Lourenço is facing a new challenge starting this November. Nuno will be joining Hovione, a Portuguese Pharmaceutical Company dedicated to bringing new and off-patent drugs to market as a Process Chemist. At iBB, his research was centered at the interface of organic chemistry and biotechnology. During the past years Nuno explored topics such as the enzymatic resolution of racemic mixtures, biocatalyzed asymmetric synthesis of fine chemicals, preparation of new biocompatible templates (Ion Jelly®) and the use of alternative reaction medium such as ionic liquids and emulsions. We wish Nuno the best of luck for his professional career and look forward to collaborating with him in the near future.

Dr. Peter Zijlstra from the Molecular Biosensing for Medical Diagnostics (MBx) group at TU Eindhoven (The Netherlands) will be given a talk on "Plasmon resonances in single metal nanoparticles and their applications" this Friday, 24/10, at 12h00m, in Anfiteatro Abreu Faro (Complexo Interdisciplinar). The MBx group develops technologies to detect proteins and study protein function with single-molecule resolution in complex macromolecular environments such as blood plasma or living cells and investigates biophysical manipulation and detection methods with emphasis on the use of small particles, in particular magnetic and plasmonic nanoparticles.

Suitability of a Yeast-based Assay to Assess Pyrimethanil Toxicity in Surface Runoff from Sprayed Soils | iBB | Scoop.it

A joint publication from BSRG-iBB and IMAR & MARE – University of Coimbra in the journal Science of the Total Environment describes evaluation of the suitability of a short-term yeast-based gene expression assay to assess the toxicity of pyrimethanil in runoff samples simulated from soils sprayed with fungicide accidental spill doses. Comparison of toxicity data to the yeast and to aquatic and soil standard species pointed the yeast assay relevant for screening worst-cases of fungicide contamination. This work was performed in the context of Fátima Gil’s PhD in Biotechnology (finished july 2014; supervisors: Cristina A Viegas, Jorge H Leitão).

Money is usually considered a source of infections. In a study comparing the bacterial numbers and diversity on coins collected in Casablanca and Lisbon, Carla C.C.R. de Carvalho (BERG-iBB, IST) and Maria-José Caramujo (FCUL) showed that coins transported in pockets presented higher number of bacterial isolates than coins transported in wallets, regardless of the gender of the person transporting them. The work, published in FEMS Microbiology Ecology, suggests that temperature and moisture might be key parameters for bacterial survival on metallic coins. The percentage of Staphylococcus strains was, curiously, 44% of the total isolates on both Moroccan Dirham and Euro coins. Click on title to learn more.

"Grants and other funding awards are an important component of a researcher’s output, so being able to add these to an ORCID record is valuable to researchers. However, manually adding grant data is cumbersome and was proving ineffective in generating high quality data, both in the ORCID and in the national repository. FCT andÜberResearch worked together to solve this challenge, by integrating the data of FCT grants awarded since 2000 into the shared global ÜberResearch grants database. Researchers are now able to add their FCT grants to their ORCID profile, with just a few clicks."

A joint publication of researchers from BERG-iBB and INESC-MN in the journal Lab-On-a-Chip describes a new method of integrating a liquid sample preparation step based on aqueous two-phase systems in continuous with an immunoassay. This was performed in microfluidic channels with a depth of 20 µm, four times thinner than the average human hair. The strategy allows simultaneous neutralization of matrix interferents, analyte concentration and detection in a single step, thus having great potential for rapid and sensitive point-of-need applications without the need for complex sample preparation procedures.  The work was performed in the context of Ruben Soares's PhD in Biotechnology (supervisors R Aires Barros, JP Conde). Click on the title to learn more.

Catarina Costa has defended her Ph D thesis in Biotechnology at Instituto Superior Técnico, tuesday the 9th December 2014. During the last years, and under the supervision of Miguel Cacho Teixeira from BSRG-IBB, Catarina unveiled novel mechanisms of resistance to antifungal drugs in pathogenic yeasts. The title of her thesis is “Antifungal drug resistance in the pathogenic yeast Candida glabrata: emphasis on the role of the uncharacterized drug:H+ antiporters”.

The Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB-IST) has received the final classification of Excellent, as a result of the 2013 review of the national R&D institutions organized by the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology, securing funding for its 2015-2020 strategic program. In their Final consensus report, the evaluation pannel stated that:

 

 "The visit confirmed that IBB is – by many lengths – the strongest Portuguese research venture in many aspects of modern bio-technology. New, and very promising research units within the field are being formed elsewhere in Portugal, but the impact of IBB will remain strong for many years."

The success of gene delivery through liposomes depends on the effectiveness of endosomal escape and nucleic acid release from the chosen vectors. Performing a simultaneous quantitative monitoring of the two processes is not trivial, and most studies seeking to characterize these processes fail to do so. In a recent publication in Human Gene Therapy Methods, BERG-iBB researchers working in collaboration with Centro de Química Física Molecular of IST, describe a tool that could offer simultaneous quantitative information on both the intracellular dissociation of lipoplexes, and on the DNA escape from endocytic compartments. This ability is expected to be of high value in the rationalization and conception of new lipid nanoparticle vectors for gene delivery for therapeutic purposes. Click on title to learn more.

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) is the oldest and largest single life science membership organization in the world. Membership has grown from 59 scientists in 1899 to more than 39,000 members today, with more than one third located outside the United States. The members represent 26 disciplines of microbiological specialization plus a division for microbiology educators.

On Feb. 21, Tuesday, iBB will receive the visit of Dr. Diogo Proenca, Young Ambassador of Portugal to the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). The visit will include a presentation (14:30 H, meeting room 9th floor, South Tower) in which Dr. Proença will publicize the activities of the ASM and describe the advantages of being a member.

"The NATO Science Programme for Peace and Security (SPS) is an important contributor  to the reinforcement of Euro-Atlantic efforts in international security, enhancing scientific and technological research and promoting international cooperation between NATO Member States and Allies.

The SPS Programme funds R&D multi-annual projects, specialised training sessions, and the organisation of workshops involving the scientific communities of Member States and, at least, one Allied Country. Projects can be funded with between 200 and 300 K€. Purchase of equipment is eligible."

A group of 15 Ph. D. students and 3 staff members from the Bioprocessing Group of the University of Wageningen (NL) will be visiting IBB on the morning of the 23rd October, as part of their field trip to Portugal. A session will take place at the amphitheater of Complexo Interdisciplinar from 9 to 13 h where 2 PhD students from WU and 2 PhD students from IBB will have the opportunity to present their work. The students from WU will also have the opportunity to present their work in a dedicated poster session. All members of IBB are invited to participate (see program below and click on photo to go to Bioprocess Engineering @WU).

Luís Miguel raiado Pereira will be defending his Ph D thesis in Biotechnology at Instituto Superior Técnico, thrusday the 9th October 2014 (14:30 H, room PA3). During the last years, and under the supervision of Marília Mateus and Miguel Prazeres from BERG-IBB, Luís 

developed membrane hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) membranes based on alkyl and phenyl ligands and studied their applicability  in the downstream processing of plasmid DNA.  The title of the thesis is “Hydrophobic Interaction Membrane Chromatography for the Downstream Processing of Plasmid DNA”.
