A lecture course on 3D Printed Chromatographic Columns will be delivered by Simone Dimartino from the University of Edinburgh just before the ABC2 workshop on the 22nd November, in Lisbon. The course will focus on the impact of Additive Manufacturing (AM) in the separation sciences and downstream processing worlds. The participants will be offered an overview of the entire 3D printing pipeline, from CAD design to post printing processes. The various AM techniques available and their specific advantages and drawbacks for creating chromatographic columns will be discussed. Finally, present applications of 3D printing in the separation sciences will be covered, highlighting current challenges as well as future opportunities. Click on title to learn more.

Prof. Willem M. De Vos will be giving a talk entitled "Lessons from Lactobacilli", Thursday the 16th February, at 14:30 h in room QA02.1, South Tower, IST (Alameda). Willem de Vos (1954) is full professor of Microbiology at Wageningen University. Professor De Vos received the NWO Spinoza Prize 2008 for his groundbreaking research into the contribution of microorganisms such as bacteria to human food and health. 

The talk is included in the 2nd joint BIOTECnico and AEM PhD Programs workshop that will take place at Instituto Superior Técnico on the 15th and 16th February.

Prof. Tom Coenye will be giving a talk entitled "The influence of interspecies interactions on antibiotic susceptibility of polymicrobial biofilms", Thursday the 16th February, at 11:30 h in room QA02.1, South Tower, IST (Alameda). Tom Coenye is currently senior lecturer at Ghent University, and head of the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Microbiology. The LPM studies the "social behavior" of a wide range of organisms (both bacteria and funghi), both in single and multispecies consortia, and within the context of a wide range of infectious diseases (including acne, chronically infected wounds and chronic respiratory tract infections in CF patients). 


The talk is included in the 2nd joint BIOTECnico and AEM PhD Programs workshop that will take place at Instituto Superior Técnico on the 15th and 16th February.

We offer a three-day hands-on workshop that intends to capture the attention of talented graduate and post-graduate students (including M.Sc., Ph.D., Post-docs and researchers) with a background in computational chemistry, bioinformatics, chemical and biochemical engineering, for the forefront computational methodologies in use nowadays, in the field of de novo Protein Design. During the course, participants are encouraged to debate their own scientific issues with invited experts and also to explore provided tools to analyze and integrate theoretical results during the correspondent hands-on sessions. Prof. Gönül Schara from the Genetics and Bioengineering Department, Fatih University, Turkey will be visiting IST and BERG-IBB from the 9th to the 12th September. Gönül will be giving a workshop in Protein Bioengineering on the 10th (9-12 h) and 11th (9-12 h), room 5-LTI, 5th floor, Torre Sul. The following topics will be covered: Introduction to protein engineering and directed evolution. Protein structure modeling: Swiss Model and Pymol. Protein structure modeling: AutoDock. Furthermore, Gönül is interested in learning about the education activities carried out at IST and about the research being performed in the areas of Molecular Bioengineering.

Progress in the field of protein folding requires a close dialogue between simulation and experiment. The workshop "Integrative Approaches to Protein Folding & Aggregation" aims to bring together computational and experimental scientists with scientists doing translational research in order to foster the dialogue between the three communities so that novel and integrative approaches can be developed. The workshop will take place on June 11-12th 2019 at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL). Ana M. Azevedo from BERG-iBB and Ana Cecilia Roque from UCBIO are chairing the international workshop “ABC2 - Anything But Conventional Chromatography” that will be held in Lisbon on November 22-24th, 2017. ABC2 is co-organized by Instituto Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon) and the Faculty of Science and Technology (Nova University of Lisbon), under the umbrella of the Downstream Processing Section of the European Society of Biochemical Engineering Science (ESBES). The event will focus on less conventional methods for the separation of biological products, as aqueous two phase systems, magnetic fishing, precipitation, crystallization, including also less conventional chromatography methods (e.g. expanded bed, monoliths, membranes, radial chromatography). Prof. Jack Pronk will be giving a talk entitled " Engineering of carbon and redox metabolism in yeast for bioethanol production", Thursday the 16th February, at 13:30 h in room QA02.1, South Tower, IST (Alameda). Jack Pronk is a full professor at the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). Jack’s fascination for micro-organisms is inspired by their applications in industry. In his research, he aims to understand and improve microbial performance by integrating quantitative physiology, genomics, metabolic and evolutionary engineering. Highlights include the successful engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for pentose fermentation (now commercialized by DSM) and, recently, the functional expression of a pyruvate-dehydrogenase complex in the yeast cytosol, which opened up a new, energy-efficient pathway towards acetyl-coenzyme A as a key metabolic precursor.
