Aruna Santhagunam will be defending her Ph D thesis in Biotechnology and Biosciences at Instituto Superior Técnico on the 9th December 2015. During the last years, and under the supervision of Joaquim Cabral from BERG-IBB , Aruna has investigated the isolation, culture and characterization of mesenchymal stromal cells obtaind from synovial liquid/tissue samples, with especial emphasis on their chondrogenic potential.  The title of her thesis is “Synovial Mesenchymal Stromal Cells for Cratilage Repair”.

Filipe Daniel Ramos de Carvalho will be defending his Ph D thesis in Biotechnology and Biosciences at Instituto Superior Técnico, monday the 7th December 2015 (10:00 H, room PA3). During the last years, and under the supervision of Pedro Fernandes from BERG-IBB, Filipe developed microreactors to study and carry out enzyme-catalysed biotransformations. The title of Filipe's  thesis is “Development of enzyme microreactors and application in biocatalysis”.

During the last years, and under the supervision of Frederico Ferreira and Cláudia Lobato Silva from BERG-iBB, Javad has investigated strategies to produce platelets from stem cells.  The title of his thesis is “Engineering The Microenvironment Of Human Umbilical Cord Blood Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cells Towards Efficient Megakaryocytic Lineage Differentiation And Platelet Production Ex‐vivo”.

Irina Neves Simões  has defended her Ph D thesis in Bioengineering (MIT Portugal program) at Instituto Superior Técnico on the 27th November 2015. During the last years, and under the supervision of Cláudia Lobato da Silva from BERG-IBB and Pedro Baptista from Aragon Health Sciences Institute, Irina has investigated tissue engineering approaches to construct urethra bioscaffolds.  The title of her thesis is “Tissue Engineering Approaches to Stress Urinary Incontinence using Acellular Urethra Bioscaffolds”.

During the last years, and under the supervision of  Cláudia Lobato Silva and Catarina Madeira from BERG-iBB ,  and Maria da Graça Almeida-Porada from the Wake Forest School of Medicine, Joana has investigated the use of non-viral vectors to modify human mesenchymal stem cells with the aim of developing immunotherapy strategies.  The title of her thesis is “Novel immunotherapy strategies with genetically-engineered human mesenchymal stem cells using non-viral vectors”.

Salomé Magalhães has defended her Ph D thesis in Biotechnology at Instituto Superior Técnico, monday the 27th January 2015. During the last years, and under the supervision of Gabriel Monteiro from BERG-IBB and Inge Nielsen from Nofima, Salomé has investigated strategies  to increase the resistance of DNA vaccines against nuclease, which include the use of  inhibitors from marine origin and the modification of specific nucleotides in the vaccines backbone.  The title of her thesis is “Strategies to Increase DNA Vaccines Resistance to Nucleases”.
