InSilico4OCReg – Computational Models Optimizing In Vitro Biophysical Stimulation Protocols for Osteochondral Regeneration

InSilico4OCReg – Computational Models Optimizing In Vitro Biophysical Stimulation Protocols for Osteochondral Regeneration | iBB | Scoop.it

The research project “InSilico4OCReg - In silico models guiding in vitro biophysical stimulation of biomimetic hierarchical scaffolds: a computational modelling approach towards functional osteochondral regeneration” was recommended for funding by FCT (250,000 euros in the 2021 Call for SR&TD Project Grants). The project started in January 2022 and aims to develop an innovative combined in silico modelling-in vitro experimental system which, inspired by the properties of the native osteochondral tissue, will be able to optimize tissue engineering strategies towards the production of implants with improved functionality and mechanical properties. The multidisciplinary team of InSilico4OCReg includes researchers from iBB, CDRSP-Politécnico de Leiria, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY-USA), and an orthopedic surgeon (Hospital dos Lusíadas). The project, which falls within the scientific area of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Systems, is headed by João Carlos Silva (PI, SCERG-iBB) and Prof. Paula Pascoal-Faria (co-PI, CDRSP-Politécnico de Leiria).

Searching the Ocean for New Biotechnology Resources

Searching the Ocean for New Biotechnology Resources | iBB | Scoop.it

BERG-iBB researchers have just started their participation in the Project INMARE (Industrial Applications of Marine Enzymes: Innovative screening and expression platforms to discover and use the functional protein diversity from the sea”), a new international consortium of more than 20 partners from academia and industry from 12 countries, including leading multinational industrial partners, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Program. The project will mine for and use newly discovered microbial enzymes and metabolites, in particular for the targeted production of fine chemicals, environmental clean-up technologies and anti-cancer drugs.

The IST team, led by Prof. Joaquim Sampaio Cabral and Dr. Carla de Carvalho, will develop reactors and integrated processes to assess and improve biocatalysts under both natural and simulated process conditions. Since the majority of microbes from extreme environments cannot be cultured under standard lab conditions, the team will also propose new techniques and growth conditions to cultivate such microorganisms.

Miguel Prazeres's insight:

Congratulations!

BERG-iBB Project Moves to the 2nd Step of the Evaluation of Consolidator Grants

BERG-iBB Project Moves to the 2nd Step of the Evaluation of Consolidator Grants | iBB | Scoop.it

Ana Margarida Azevedo from BERG-iBB has moved to the second step of the evaluation of Consolidator Grants of the European Research Council with a project entitled “PureMAb: Addressing the Manufacturing Challenges Faced by the Therapeutic Monoclonal Antibodies Market”. In many cases, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are the only treatment option for patients with life-threatening diseases such as cancer. Unfortunately, mAbs are the most expensive drugs in the world. The project aims to decrease the manufacturing costs of mAbs by exploring alternative purification methodologies such as multimodal chromatography. A microfluidic platform is developed to accelerate the screening of ligands and binding/elution conditions.

FCT Grants Data Can be Added to ORCID Profiles

FCT Grants Data Can be Added to ORCID Profiles | iBB | Scoop.it

"Grants and other funding awards are an important component of a researcher’s output, so being able to add these to an ORCID record is valuable to researchers. However, manually adding grant data is cumbersome and was proving ineffective in generating high quality data, both in the ORCID and in the national repository. FCT andÜberResearch worked together to solve this challenge, by integrating the data of FCT grants awarded since 2000 into the shared global ÜberResearch grants database. Researchers are now able to add their FCT grants to their ORCID profile, with just a few clicks."
