Professor Paula Videira will be giving a talk entitled "Glycoimmunology: the sugars mellow the immune response", Monday the 22th February, at 12h30m, in room QA1.1, South Tower, IST (Alameda). Prof. Paula Videira received her BSc degree in Biochemistry, from Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra, in 1995, and her PhD in Biotechnology, from Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, in 2002. Paula is currently Assistant Professor at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (FCT), NOVA University of Lisbon (UNL) and Leader of the Glycoimmunology group, CEDOC. Her main interests are to elucidate the role of Glycosylation in immune response and cancer progression and to develop novel cell and antibody-based immunotherapy.The talk is included in the VIII Edition of the Bioengineering Department seminar cycle and Paula will be hosted by Miguel Teixeira from BSRG-iBB.

Susana Vinga will be giving a talk entitled "Systems Engineering in the Life Sciences", Monday the 7th February, at 12h30m, in room QA1.1, South Tower, IST (Alameda). Susana Vinga received her BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, from IST, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, in 1999, a Post-graduation in Applied Mathematics from the same institute in 2002 and a PhD in Biology/Bioinformatics at ITQB, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in 2005. From 2006 to 2013 she was a post-doctoral researcher in the Knowledge Discovery and Bioinformatics group (KDBIO), at INESC-ID. Susana is currently Principal Investigator at Centre of Intelligent Systems (CSI), IDMEC - Instituto de Engenharia Mecânica, and Invited Assistant Professor at IST. Her main research interests are on Systems Biomedicine, with emphasis in engineering applications to the life sciences, including the Systems Biology approach of dynamic modeling of metabolic networks.
