The Seventh Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bucks and Montco Teen Peace and Social Justice Summit, held at Bensalem High School on Sunday, focused on discussions around building stronger relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

The event kicked off with a screening of “Walking While Black: L.O.V.E. is the Answer,” a 2017 documentary by A.J. Ali and Errol Webber. The film offered a critical look at the harmful, and at times deadly, consequences of mistrust between police officers and their communities, and offered action steps towards reconciliation and healing.

The movie featured interviews with active and retired law enforcement officers, as well as members of minority communities sharing their experiences and a shared mission to repair build stronger police-community relationships.

In the film, L.O.V.E. is presented as an acronym for Learn about the community and the people in it, Open your heart to the humanity of people in the community, Volunteer yourself to be part of the solution in their lives, and Empower others to do the same.

Following the movie, participants broke off into small groups to share their own experiences and perspectives, while discussing ideas for building stronger community-police relationships.
