5 Essentials for Developing People

I hear this constant debate about managers and leaders. My perspective is that every job at a management level - department head, team leader, director, vice president - has elements of both.

However, where most fail is not around have a strategic vision, and it's not around the inability to technically grasp their job. It's on the people management side of effectively hiring and retaining an outstanding group of people who become a high performing team.

Is that management or leadership?

Barry Deutsch's curator insight, 21 April, 01:35

It's bordering on comical when CEOs and executives say "why should I invest in training when I'm just preparing them for a job in another company".

Is this your philosophy about training and development? Or is your organization up on a pedestal for your investments in training and developing people? Have you done any formal survey work to discover why people join your organization or leave? How much is related to developing, training, coaching, and helping people realize their dreams?

Essential components of a learning and development strategy | McKinsey

Essential components of a learning and development strategy | McKinsey | Learning and HR Matters | Scoop.it

Over the past decade, the global workforce has been continually evolving because of a number of factors. An increasingly competitive business landscape, rising complexity, and the digital revolution are reshaping the mix of employees. Meanwhile, persistent uncertainty, a multigenerational workforce, and a shorter shelf life for knowledge have placed a premium on reskilling and upskilling. The shift to a digital, knowledge-based economy means that a vibrant workforce is more important than ever: research suggests that a very significant percentage of market capitalization in public companies is based on intangible assets—skilled employees, exceptional leaders, and knowledge.1

All of these trends have elevated the importance of the learning-and-development (L&D) function. We undertook several phases of research to understand trends and current priorities in L&D (see sidebar, “Learning and development—From evolution to revolution”). Our efforts highlighted how the L&D function is adapting to meet the changing needs of organizations, as well as the growing levels of investment in professional development.

Create a flexible and engaging learning environment with Customized Learning

Create a flexible and engaging learning environment with Customized Learning | Learning and HR Matters | Scoop.it

Customized learning is a learner-centric approach. Learners make their own decisions regarding the content they want to consume, how learning is planned, and what the goals are. Some systems incorporate self-assessment and let learners decide what they want to achieve by interacting with the system.

In most corporate settings, customized learning is supported by the use of analytics. An LMS can track a learner's performance and interests, then recommend specific modules or learning paths adapted to each user.

What is Adult Learning Theory and why is it important?

What is Adult Learning Theory and why is it important? | Learning and HR Matters | Scoop.it

We often take for granted that people know how to learn. After all, we all had to learn while in school, right? But that can be a dangerous attitude to take when it comes to corporate training initiatives. School curricula are built on theories about how children and teenagers learn (and how much time they can dedicate to learning). Have you ever considered whether adults learn in the same way? (Spoiler: They don’t!)

That’s where Adult Learning Theory comes into play. Knowing how adults tend to learn, you can tailor corporate training programs to take advantage of qualities adult learners have—like their eagerness to learn relevant material, their need to connect with experience, and their motivation to improve themselves.

To grasp adult learning theory and how it can be applied, it helps to contrast how adults learn from how we learned when we were children.

Don’t Let Lazy Managers Drive Away Your Top Performers

Don’t Let Lazy Managers Drive Away Your Top Performers | Learning and HR Matters | Scoop.it

Many people believe that being a good manager only requires common sense, and that it is therefore easy to be one. If this were true, good managers would be commonplace at all levels of more organizations, and as a result, employee engagement and retention would be high. However, only 13% of workers worldwide are engaged at work, and employee turnover rates in the United States are at a 17-year high. As these statistics suggest, either most managers lack common sense, or good management is, in fact, quite challenging in practice.
