Doug O’Neill, who tops the Del Mar trainer standings, begins a 40-day suspension on Sunday for a total carbon dioxide overage found in one of his runners at Del Mar in 2010. Through Thursday, O’Neill had 15 wins, one more than Peter Miller. More than two weeks are left in a Del Mar meeting, which ends on Sept. 5. During his suspension, O’Neill will turn the business over to his assistant, Leandro Mora.

THE anomaly of headgear worn by horses in Ireland all coming under the official description of "blinkers" has finally been resolved. The Turf Club on Friday announced a change to the rules has been approved by the Stewards of the Governing Bodies, to facilitate a more accurate declaration of headgear.

Along with his wife, Kathy, Shireman owns Superstardom, a daughter of Smarty Jones they purchased privately for $12,500 after the filly did not meet its reserve price at a Florida sale in January 2011.

The lead outrider at Keeneland Race Course received an additional suspension of more than 16 months from a Kentucky Horse Racing Commission committee on Wednesday for training a horse that ran at the track in April under another trainer’s name.

Jockey Robby Albarado has been fined $500 for his misdemeanor conviction of assaulting his former girlfriend during a scuffle for a cellphone. The veteran jockey was not in the Louisville, Ky., courtroom Aug. 14 when Jefferson District Judge Ann Bailey Smith imposed the fine recommended by a jury that convicted Albarado of fourth-degree assault last month.
