WiTricity acquires Qualcomm platform Halo

WiTricity acquires Qualcomm platform Halo | Groupe Recharge | Scoop.it
WiTricity has acquired Qualcomm’s Halo technology platform and several patents in contactless power transmission. WiTricity says the acquisition will help accelerate the market introduction of inductive charging for electric vehicles. The transaction will make Qualcomm a minority shareholder in WiTricity. And WiTricity, in turn, increases the number of proprietary patents and patent applications related to wireless charging to over 1,500.
“Bringing the Qualcomm Halo technology into the WiTricity portfolio will simplify global interoperability and significantly accelerate commercialization,” said Alex Gruzen, CEO of WiTricity. It is well known that one of the biggest disadvantages of the technology at present is that the inductive stations of the individual brands cannot be used across manufacturers.
WiTricity has just recently signed a license agreement with the German supplier Mahle. However, the Stuttgart-based company is by no means the only one: Toyota, Aptiv (previously Delphi), TDK, IHI, Shindengen, Daihen, Brusa and Anjie Wireless also have licence agreements with WiTricity. At the CES in Las Vegas, the company also presented a wireless V2G charging model based on WiTricity’s DRIVE 11 charging system for the first time with Honda. Qualcomm now joins a group of WiTricity investors that includes Toyota, Intel Capital, Delta Electronics Capital, Foxconn, Haier and Schlumberger.

Sweden to ban sales of fossil-fuel powered cars by 2030

Sweden to ban sales of fossil-fuel powered cars by 2030 | Groupe Recharge | Scoop.it
Sweden is saying goodbye to cars with internal combustion engines. Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has now declared that no new cars with diesel or petrol engines will be sold after 2030.
Clearly, Scandinavia is stepping up when it comes to transport transition off fossil fuels. Norway, which is so far the only country ever to have an EV-registration quota of around 50 per cent, has aimed even higher, with no new cars with combustion engines to be on the market in 2025. Denmark has drawn up corresponding plans for the year 2030, as Sweden has now done.
But it is not just Scandinavia that is managing the change. Greenpeace transport expert Marion Tiemann pointed out that Sweden is now the tenth country to have set such a concrete phase-out date, and that larger nations such as Great Britain and France are also among them. The latter however angle toward ICE bans no sooner than by 2040 – for the time being.

Three-quarters of Dutch Tesla drivers have been fined for speeding | Groupe Recharge | Scoop.it

Three-quarters of the Netherlands’ 9,000 Tesla drivers picked up a speeding ticket last year, the highest proportion of any car brand, according to new figures from national statistics office CBS. In addition, nearly two-thirds of plug-in hybrid cars had been fined at least once for speeding, showing that green car drivers are by far the most likely to go too fast on the Dutch roads. Just 28% of petrol-powered cars and 46% of those which run on diesel were caught speeding during the year.

California to pass half-million electric-car mark

California to pass half-million electric-car mark | Groupe Recharge | Scoop.it

By the end of November, California will have more than 500,000 electric cars registered in the state, according to the latest report from Veloz, a consortium of state regulators, utilities, and other advocates for electric cars. California already has 491,000 electric cars on its roads, out of the 1.02 million sold in the United States since 2011. This seems to be the result, primarily, of Tesla finally reaching near full production of the Model 3, delivering almost 56,000 of the cars in the U.S. and Canada in the third quarter.

Electric cars now make up more than 10 percent of sales in the state.

Europe's battery cell plans in numbers

Europe's battery cell plans in numbers | Groupe Recharge | Scoop.it

German government minister Peter Altmeier wants to have about 30% of global battery production in 2030 take place in Europe.  According to the some experts, the battery production could grow to 3,000 GWh by 2030, which would mean that the 30% Altmaier and Šefčovič hope for would be a cool 1,000 GWh. If we take Tesla’s Gigafactory as an example here with 35 GWh, Europe would theoretically need about 29 such factories to satisfy 30% of global demand.

Europe’s ambitious plans for battery cell production are a bit behind if these numbers can be relied on – construction and investment efforts over the next twelve years would have to be immense. Of these projects, none have begun at this point, so it remains to be seen how quickly the EU can get mobilized for e-mobility.

Austria to let drivers of electric cars go faster

Austria to let drivers of electric cars go faster | Groupe Recharge | Scoop.it
Austria is offering would-be electric-car owners (and current ones) a tempting incentive to go tailpipe-emissions-free: permission to drive faster than those with gasoline, diesel, or hybrid vehicles in certain conditions.
Under a recently approved amendment to the country’s speed limits, aimed at rewarding those who choose electric vehicles, they will be given a legal exemption. During emissions-restricted times tied to high pollution levels, owners of EVs will be allowed to go 81 mph (130 km/h), versus 62 mph (100 km/h), in a particular speed region that includes 273 miles (440 km) of roadways.

Nissan Leaf approved to feed into grid in Germany | Groupe Recharge | Scoop.it

The Nissan Leaf is the first electric car to receive approval to serve as stabilising back up of the grid in Germany. Nissan managed to take all regulatory hurdles for the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology by working with partners from the energy sector. Essentially the approval means the Nissan Leaf is now officially a mini power plant that may inject power into the net. To establish their V2G technology, Nissan had the backing of Daimler-funded The Mobility House, utility Enervie and German transmission system operator Amprion, which is co-owned by RWE.

EU CO2 targets = "more than 40% EVs in 2030"

EU CO2 targets = "more than 40% EVs in 2030" | Groupe Recharge | Scoop.it

Volkswagen may have to step up its plans for mass production of electric vehicles in order to meet tougher-than-expected European targets to cut greenhouse emissions from cars, its chief executive said on Tuesday.

The remarks came after the European Union agreed on Monday to cut CO2 emissions from cars by 37.5 percent by 2030, and follow warnings from Germany, home to the bloc’s biggest automotive industry, that tough targets could cost jobs and harm the sector. This is more than the 30 percent Volkswagen (VW), still reeling from an emissions cheating scandal, expected and would translate into a share for electric vehicles of more than 40 percent of its expected total vehicle sales in 2030, CEO Herbert Diess said.

Volkswagen to stop building on fossil fuel engines from 2026

Volkswagen to stop building on fossil fuel engines from 2026 | Groupe Recharge | Scoop.it
Volkswagen has strengthened their new stand for e-mobility when their chief strategist for the VW brand, Michael Jost, announced the end of all combustion engines for the carmaker. The ICE, no matter if petrol or diesel, will not be developed any longer after 2026.
Yet this does not mean that VW will stop building cars with combustion engines that year. The company thinks in seven-year development cycles so when the engineers in Wolfsburg take to the drawing board in 2025, it will be the last time they may include a fossil-fuel powered engine. This means the last ICEs by Volkswagen will probably be sold around 2030. It is a sort of holding out as long as they can because after that year more and more countries will begin to ban sales of such vehicles anyway. Moreover Jost pointed to the Paris Climate Accord and tightening emission regulations. Still, the chief strategist’s announcement is a stand for electric mobility. He clearly said that battery-electric vehicles and not hybrids were the way to go for Volkswagen and overall the move is further than other carmakers have been prepared to go as most only agreed to discontinue diesel model for now. He also said, Volkswagen wants to introduce sustainability across the entire life cycle.

GB: EDF Energy to install 1,500 V2G charging points

GB: EDF Energy to install 1,500 V2G charging points | Groupe Recharge | Scoop.it
Vehicle-to-grid charging is to get bigger in Britain with EDF Energy wanting to install 1,500 such V2G connections. The utility announces a partnership with technology company Nuvve and is aiming for the B2B market first.
In concrete terms, EDF and Nuvve will install 1,500 units of what they call “smart electric chargers” in the United Kingdom. These V2G applications are to store energy in no peak times in order to make it available for sale on the energy markets or for supporting grid flexibility at times of peak energy use. EDF and Nuvve have signed a strategic partnership agreement with a view to forming a joint venture to develop these V2G solutions in Europe. The San Diego-based green energy technology firm has deployed similar projects on five continents including what they claim to be the “world’s first fully commercial V2G hub in Denmark,” which has been operational for two years now. We suspect Nuvve is referring to a V2G project they have set up with Nissan in the Nordic country. In addition the Japanese carmaker and Nuvve are currently working to install a 1,000 V2G charger network and EV fleet in the UK.

Tesla releases Q3 earnings: record revenue and a profit

Tesla releases Q3 earnings: record revenue and a profit | Groupe Recharge | Scoop.it

Tesla reports a profit for the second time in its history and makes a record revenue : a profit of $312 million from a record revenue of 6.8 billion dollars. Compare this to about $4BN in revenue just a quarter ago. This was mainly due to the gross margin on Model 3 topping 20%.

This means Tesla righteously says their Q3 2018 was a “truly historic quarter” thanks to the success of the Model 3 in particular. The economy Tesla was the best-selling car in the U.S. in terms of revenue and the 5th best-selling car in terms of volume, according to the EV maker.

Overall, Tesla delivered 56,065 Model 3s to customers in Q3. Also in terms of production they have made progress as Tesla managed to decrease labour hours per Model 3 by more than 30% from Q2 to Q3. Clearly they have come out of production hell and made it into the profit zone.
