South African sugar farmers face labour shortage as migrant workers leave

Sugar cane farmers in KwaZulu-Natal province say a severe labour shortage is threatening the harvest, as thousands of mainly undocumented migrant workers have left South Africa amid rising anti-migrant sentiment and violence. Farmers warn that without enough workers, sugar output could fall, potentially forcing imports and harming an industry that is a major export earner. Labour unions dispute this, arguing that South Africans are willing to do the work but are being overlooked because they would demand fair, legally mandated wages.

One of Slovenia’s last glaciers could be gone in days

A 10,000-year-old glacier in Slovenia is possibly days away from melting entirely.

The Triglav Glacier, a once-popular skiing spot high in the Alps near Slovenia's border with both Austria and Italy, has been monitored by scientists since 1946, when it covered 34 acres.

But years of climate change and rising temperatures, coupled with below-average snowfall last winter and premature melting this spring, have brought one of Slovenia's last glaciers to the precipice of extinction.

Melting glaciers pose real concerns for European nations. In Switzerland, over the past five years alone, glaciers have lost nearly 20% of their ice, threatening the supply of water and hydroelectric power.

India's disappearing islands turn to seagrass to fight rising seas

Kariyachalli is one of 21 islands off India’s Tamil Nadu coast, and has already lost more than 80 percent of its landmass over the past 50 years due to coral mining, bleaching and rising sea levels. Scientists warn it could vanish entirely by 2036 without intervention. A local community is now working with marine researchers to restore seagrass and coral reefs, creating natural barriers to protect both the island and the coastal economy that depends on it.
