Drones for GIS – Best Practice

Drones (also known as unmanned aerial vehicles, UAVs, or remotely piloted vehicles) are being used increasingly across the organisation, both on and off reserves. In many cases, the objectives for drone use requires the imagery to be mapped in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Uses for the data in GIS include bespoke, on–demand, high resolution aerial imagery, habitat surveys, and bird colony monitoring. Often many individual drone images are joined together to create a composite image, covering a larger area. This document aims to provide best practice guidance for collecting drone imagery for use in GIS, to aid conservation practices across the organisation.
Philip Knight's insight:
A guide to using drones for conservation from the RSPB.

XYZ Web Map Services for QGIS3

This script should be run from the Python consol inside QGIS. It adds online sources to the QGIS Browser.
Philip Knight's insight:
This provides the functionality that the excellent Next GIS Quick Map Service plugin provided for QGIS2. You run it using the Python console. Then open the Browser panel (which is so much more functional in QGIS3) and you will have a list of web map services that you can easily add to any map.

This 104 page A4 pdf guide that should enable those involved in community archaeology to start using a Quantum Graphical Information System to handle their archaeology data and generate professional looking maps for their reports, whilst at the same time learning how to process the LIDAR data that is freely available in the UK and elsewhere. LIDAR is processed as: 2D greyscale images, 2D colour banded elevations and 3D greyscale and colour banded elevation models.
Philip Knight's insight:
Mainly for those wishing to use the UK's open Lidar data, but also useful for anyone wishing to use QGIS to handle Lidar.
