The facilitating library

The facilitating library | Library and Information DigiLIt CPD | Scoop.it
Phil Bradley's local library is a lively community hub - and is all the better for it!
Llandrillo Library's insight:
Beth arall allwch chi ei wneud mewn llyfrgell?

"It's not about books, DVDs, collection building and so on, but it's absolutely crucial work, because the real value of the library is help nurture and help the community develop. While it's a hub for the recycling bags and so on, it's far more than that - its value in supporting and helping people, with whatever they want to do, and the attitude of the librarian is crucial in this."

This consultation seeks views on the government’s Internet Safety Strategy.
Llandrillo Library's insight:
"Wrth gyflawni'r amcanion hyn, bydd ein gwaith yn seiliedig ar dair egwyddor allweddol, sef:
• Dylai'r hyn sy'n annerbyniol all-lein fod yn annerbyniol ar-lein; • Dylai pob defnyddiwr gael ei rymuso i reoli risgiau ar-lein a chadw'n ddiogel;
• Mae gan gwmnïau technoleg gyfrifoldeb i ddiogelu eu defnyddwyr. Rydym wedi ymgynghori ag amrywiaeth eang o randdeiliaid gan gynnwys elusennau, sefydliadau diogelwch ar y rhyngrwyd, ymchwilwyr academaidd a chwmnïau technoleg wrth ddatblygu'r amcanion a'r mentrau yn y papur gwyrdd hwn."

"In delivering these objectives, our work will be underpinned by three key principles:
• What is unacceptable offline should be unacceptable online;
• All users should be empowered to manage online risks and stay safe;
• Technology companies have a responsibility to their users. We have consulted a wide range of stakeholders including charities, internet safety organisations, academic researchers and technology companies while developing the objectives and initiatives in this green paper."

17 August 2017

Since the release of the new Google Earth for Web, we've been busy adapting the Google Lit Trip library to maximize the viewer experience when imported into the gorgeous new Google Earth for Web.

With its amazingly beautiful smooth animation and full 3D globe, Google Earth for Web provides the most immersive viewer experience for all computer, chromebook, and tablet users.

We've focused upon our most popular titles first. The current list of fully adapted titles on the website at GoogleLitTrips.org will be updated as we continue our efforts to fully adapt the entire Lit Trip Library over the next few months.

If there's a title we haven't yet fully adapted, let us know the title and we'll prioritize our efforts to fully adapt remaining Lit Trips based upon demand.

You can email your requests to me at UpdateRequest@GoogleLitTrips.org

This is a vibrant and exciting time to be in education. Continuing to conduct business as usual is a shrinking option for our schools as other sectors more nimbly embrace change and innovation. Additionally, the number of schools and teachers actually doing this work is increasing, creating a network of individuals and institutions pushing one another to new heights. Here are ten predictions for 2018 based on inspiring examples we’ve seen building momentum in our schools.

Llandrillo Library's insight:
the BBC are launching a new UK-wide campaign to help  young people identify and be vigilant for fake news. through roadshows and online support schools and 6th forms will be supported to develop skills - although we would argue that librarians have been delivering support like this since records began. It's a good step forward for the BBC but we hope they will be working in partnership with information professionals to deliver and develop this content.

Llandrillo Library's insight:
"Making it possible for the state to open your locks in secret means that anyone who works for the state, or anyone who can bribe or coerce anyone who works for the state, can have the run of your life. Cryptographic locks don’t just protect our mundane communications: cryptography is the reason why thieves can’t impersonate your fob to your car’s keyless ignition system; it’s the reason you can bank online; and it’s the basis for all trust and security in the 21st century."

This is why librarians and information professionals need to be aware of data protection issues for their users and the freedom of service they present.
