TORONTO — The Canadian dollar fell heavily Wednesday to close below 89 cents U.S. for the first time since mid-2009 as markets interpreted comments by the chair of the Federal Reserve to mean the U.S. central bank could raise interest rates sooner than thought. Speculation about Fed intentions came a day after the governor of the Bank of Canada, Stephen Poloz, indicated that interest rate hikes in Canada could be further away than thought.

Individuals must consider many factors when choosing a financial advisor: expertise, credentials, types of services offered, how the firm charges and how much, whether his is a fiduciary, and if their philosophies are in line with each other. Another factor that some people confuse in their vetting process involves the idea of experience. It used to be that someone approaching retirement age would not consider working with an advisor who did not have the requisite amount of “gray hair.” This was not surprising.

Americans confidence in their ability to retire comfortably has improved from the record lows of the past five years, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI). Eighteen percent of workers who participated in EBRIs 2014 Retirement Confidence Survey are very confident of a comfortable retirement, up from 13 percent in 2013. However, this increased confidence was almost exclusively among those with higher household incomes ($75,000 and up), and was also strongly correlated to respondents participation in a retirement plan. In fact, workers reporting they or their spouse have money in a defined contribution plan or IRA or have a defined benefit plan from a current or previous employer are more than twice as likely as those without any of these plans to be very confident (24 percent with a plan vs. 9 percent without a plan), noted Jack VanDerhei, EBRI research director, and co-author of the report. Retiree confidence in having a financially secure retirement, which historically tends to exceed worker confidence levels, says EBRI, has also increased, with 28 percent very confident up from 18 percent in 2013. Confidence in being able to afford various aspects of retirement has also improved.

One of the more delicate situations that we as financial planners come across is helping clients decide whether to lend their children money when that child comes asking. Few, if any financial decisions are more personal or emotional then when a person must decide whether to say "Yes" or "No" to a child. Helping clients navigate through these emotional and financial decisions can really help save them from heartache and grief down the road. The first question to ask your clients is whether they actually want to lend the money.

The junk-bond bonanza that¢¯¿½¯¿½s doubled the market to almost $2 trillion since the credit crisis has Jeffrey Gundlach heading toward the exit. Less than 12 months after saying the Federal Reserve¢¯¿½¯¿½s stimulus and a plunge in defaults would support the market for speculative-grade debt for another four years, the head of DoubleLine Capital LP is trimming its allocations. With borrowing costs for the least-creditworthy companies approaching a record low, junk bonds no longer provide enough of a buffer from rising Treasury yields as the Fed scales back its bond buying, said Gundlach, whose firm oversees $49 billion. ¢¯¿½¯¿½They¢¯¿½¯¿½ve squeezed all the toothpaste out of the tube,¢¯¿½¯¿½ the bond manager said in a telephone interview from Los Angeles.

There s a joke that life insurance agents often tell... They say that if you attend a wake and you see that the spouse is sobbing quietly, then the departed loved one most probably had life insurance.
